Chapter Five

Chapter Five Selene moved along the narrow corridor, which seemed to swallow her up. The silver dagger was heavy but reassuring in her hand. The darkness around her was oppressive and heavy with pressure. Each little sound magnified to great proportions in this eerie quiet. The corridor would twist and turn, making it impossible to see what lay ahead. As she walked, the corridor suddenly opened into a huge chamber. Dark symbols covered the walls, glowing faintly to cast flickering, eerie light. Selene's heart quickened at the room alive with strange energy and humming through her bones. In the room's center stood a stone pedestal with an old book laid upon it. The book was bound with dark leather and seemed to hum with some soft, ominous power. Selene took a cautious step forward, her senses alert for any danger. Before she could reach the book, a cold gust swept the chamber, blowing out the torches that lined the walls. The room went dark, with the glowing symbols on the walls providing the only light. In the dim light, Selene quickened her pulse and tried to make out her surroundings. From the shadows, a figure emerged. He was dressed in a black robe that seemed to suck up all the light around him. It didn't make Selene feel comfortable at all; she could tell there was some potent and unseen force from him. His grace was unnatural as he moved, and something inside of Selene told her this would be no easy adversary. The voice was low, yet in it lay much of authority. "Selene," he said, "you have gone far enough now for the next test to be given you: to stand against unseen forces that shape your fate." Selene's fingers tightened on the dagger as her gaze began to scour the darkness about her for some sign of movement. "What do you want from me?" she demanded, trying to keep her voice firm. "And why is the book so important?" A gleam of secret knowledge lit the dark eyes of the figure. "In the book are inscribed the secrets of the past, present, and future. It is a window to perceive the forces that rule your world and your place in it. If you would claim its power, then you must confront the shadows within yourself and make a choice that will define your path.". As the figure spoke, shifting shadows flooded across the chamber, and voices whispered in hushed tones. Selene could hardly make out the words, carried on the wind, every one of them pregnant with portent. The darkening seemed to swallow her, and she shivered. He was closer now, and the figure loomed over me. "Many have tried to claim its power, only to be consumed by darkness within. You will have to face your most profound terrors and return to the very shadows that lie hidden in your heart if you are to succeed.". Taking a deep breath, Selene sought to calm herself, for she knew she needed to be ready for whatever lay ahead. With an increased pace in her step, she came up to the pedestal and reached out for the book. The moment her fingers made contact with its cover, the chamber was washed with a blinding light, and the whispers grew louder still, swirling around her in a mad storm. As the light began to dim, Selene once more found herself elsewhere—barren wasteland, gray everywhere a glance could reach, and the earth cracked and dry. Despair clung in the air, and anguish spilled into the wind with a haunting refrain. She saw in the distance that a figure was standing alone on top of a hill. The figure was clothed in rags, and their face was hidden inside the hood. Selene had a really weird sense of familiarity, but she couldn't remember where exactly she had seen them before. Curiosity mixed with unease drove her to walk toward him. As she drew closer, the figure turned toward her, and Selene's breath caught in her throat. It was a face she had known since her nightmares—a twisted, distorted version of her own. Its eyes were hollow and empty; its presence radiated deep sadness. "Welcome," said the figure, and its voice reverberated with an otherworldly echoing. "You have come to confront the shadows within your being. But do you really know what lies beneath the facade?" Her heart was racing, and she could hear the faint trembling in her own voice as Selene spoke. "Who are you? And what do you want with me?" Her deepest fears and insecurities were laid bare by the empty eyes staring back at her from the figure. "I am the face of your inner darkness," the voice said very softly, "the fears, doubts, regrets that you keep locked up within yourself. If you want to move on, you have to confront me and face the truth of who you truly are.". Her emotions overwhelmed her as she turned to face this distorted version of herself. Shadows from her past, fears she had striven to push away, and doubts that had troubled her surged forth. With each passing moment, this figure increased in strength and menace. Knowing that she would not let the darkness eat her up, Selene lifted the silver dagger and readied herself to encounter the terrors. She knew she needed to meet with the shadows inside her and make them part of her so that she could rid herself of them. With a steady hand, she braced herself for the meeting. She closed her eyes, inhaling deeply as the figure moved further towards her. She felt all the fears and insecurities hammering upon her from a million directions. But she knew she had to face them—grit her teeth once more, open her eyes, and stand in the face of that oncoming figure. The desolate wasteland around her began to writhe and twist, suddenly yielding to a more comforting and familiar landscape. The twisted figure began to dissolve, form fading into light. Selene felt a wave of relief as the darkness receded and she was back in the chamber with the ancient book. The voice of the figure resounded softly in the chamber, filled with calm. "You faced your tenebrous depths and accepted that which is. Now, this book is yours, for you proved your strength and will.". She finally reached out and took up the book, its weight and power in her grasp. Now, a warm light bathed the chamber, and the ancient symbols that adorned its walls seemed to glow with an energy gentle and reassuring. She knew another test had been passed, but many were yet to come. The darkness did not seem to press so firmly upon her as she left the chamber, and the way ahead did not feel so confused. More than ever before, Selene felt the urge to continue her journey and meet whatever lay in wait for her. Though things were going to be very challenging, she was poised to meet them headlong—bravely and strongly.
