Chapter Seven The night air was sharp with cold as Selene advanced along the forest; the shadows that reached out from the towering trees across the ground cast long eerie shapes. Her thoughts were focused on the ancient book she had found and the mysterious guardian who showed her the echoes of the past. The weight of the booked seemed to get heavier with his every step, loaded with secrets waiting to unravel. Selene's head shot through with a multitude of questions about the contents of the book and what history it would have recorded. She had a feeling it was not merely some historical record; it seemed more like the key to her own destiny and the trials she would have to face. She walked as her eyes strayed out of the pages that were symbolled and written on, for sure, in a language she did not understand. Words pulsed with something almost alive within them, full of ancient energy, full of promised knowledge, and power. She suddenly heard the rustling of leaves, and without wasting a second, Selene came to a halt, straining her ears to the sound. The woods became absolutely silent, simplistic for the snapping of twigs at times or the occasional hoot of an owl in the distance. He turned around alertly, and to her sight was a shadowy figure, creeping out of the blackness. The figure moved with such an effortless grace; the light of the moon, so very dim, that it shone on a tall, cowled figure whose face was hooded. Selene's heart skipped a beat. She had heard of figures like this in legends: guardians of ancient knowledge or protectors of forbidden paths. This one came toward her, teaching yet mysterious. "You search for answers," the figure said, voice smooth and resonant, but the face still hid in shadows. "The book you bear has keys to many secrets, but not all should be revealed without guidance." She didn't move as she tried to hold her shaking voice at bay. "Who are you? And how do you know about the book?" It came to a halt some paces from her. Its cloak swirled, seeming to writhe about it like a living shadow. "I am a keeper of the old ways, a guide to those who seek to understand deeper truths in the world. The book in your possession is one of great power, and its secrets are not to be trifled with. She felt sparks of relief and apprehension mix inside her. "I do—I want to understand it; I really need to know what it holds and how it can help me." The figure stretched out with its hand, indicating for her to follow. "Then come. There's a place ye could learn more; a sanctuary where the book's secrets can be revealed. Be warned, though; the way is wrought with trials and tribulations." Turning, the figure began to walk deeper into the forest without waiting for an answer. Selene hesitated for a little while. Her instincts urged her to follow, but her mind was surging with questions. The forest seemed to contract around her as she followed the mysterious guide into the depths of the trees, where shadows grasped at the air and the darkness grew deeper. They walked for hours; the very trees seemed to close in around them, and the air grew cold. Selene heard the sound of running water in the distance and the intermittent cry of a night creature. Finally, the group came to an isolated grove bathed in soft, silver light from the moon. In the middle of the grove was a stone altar, ancient, covered in intricate carvings that seemed to glow of their own accord. She motioned towards the far end for Selene to stand beside her at the altar. "This is the Sanctuary of the Ancients," she said, "here where the book's secrets begin to come out, but first, prove your worth." Selene cast her eyes about the grove and was felt awe and trepidation. The carvings on the altar looked like they were a representation of trials or challenges - each look more terrifying than the last. There was a restraining pang of fear quickly remembered since her arrival: to fathom the book and its relation to the matter of her quest. They reached into their robe and pulled out a small, ornate box. Opening the lid, they disclosed a collection of ancient symbols and artifacts. "These are the tools you will require," the figure went on to explain, "and each one represents a different aspect of the trial you will be taken through. Choose wisely; henceforth, will they guide your way in what lies ahead.". Selene scrutinized the artifacts, all marked with symbols that almost pulsated, like a faint energy. She picked up a small silver amulet, distinguished with a design of a crescent moon. It was warm to the touch, she sensed it was emitting some kind of low vibration, and it softly called to her as if something inside her was answering. He nodded. "The Crescent Amulet holds the message of inner strength and purity. It is going to help cut illusions out of the way and be clear-headed while going through trials. Use it wisely now. The amulet clutched in her hand, Selene felt a regained determination to take on what lie before her and unlock the secrets within the book. The figure conducted her to the fringe of the grove, where a serpentine path wove its way through the trees and ended at a hidden door. "This way will lead you to the Chamber of Trials," the figure spoke. "Inside, you will be given trials that will test your will, courage, and intellect—the very key to the book. Multiple ways have I said." Nodding firmly, Selene inhaled deeply and stepped into the pathway. The amulet seemed warm against her chest as she pressed down it with a hand. The path ahead was black, sinuous, and shadowy. The shadows chattered whispers at her step. She could feel the weight of the trials ahead, but she was determined to face them. A wave of excitement mixed with trepidation surged inside her as she approached the chamber's entrance. They would test her spirit and mettle, whatever it was they brought out in her—more than she could ever have imagined. Before her, the massive stone door to the chamber loomed, etched over with ancient runes. Selene set one multifingered, gloved hand onto the door. There was a pulse of energy and the large stone began to move. The air within the chamber was cool and musty, and the faint glow of torches lit the depths. The room itself was immense, lit only by a high ceiling above and gigantic stone columns, stretching deep into the shadowed recesses. The floor was designed with patterns and symbols, the air filled with the low chanting of voices. She took a deep breath before entering the chamber, for more trials that laid ahead. All was at peace with the idea that, each of these challenges would bring her closer to understanding the secrets of the book and fulfill her destiny, as she was ready to let the crescent amulet be her guide in facing the ordeals that made her better than she was.
