For the next few days, Don spent long hours with Sam. Kate was busy ordering furniture and hiring contractors. Sherry happily agreed to oversee the work and promised to send Kate pictures regularly. Despite talking to Cari several times a day, Kate felt awful that she was shouldering the bulk of the work; she was anxious to get back into the kitchen.
Kate was on the porch swing waiting for Don to get home. The moment he stepped on the steps she announced, “The car is packed and I’m ready to go.”
“Well, hello to you too, dear wife.” Don appreciated Kate’s wanting to get the long drive behind them so they could sleep in their own bed. It seemed like they had been away forever, when actually it had been just shy of a week.
