Some distances are chosen.
Others…
Find you anyway.
The days after Amara got the job offer felt unreal.
Not in a dreamlike way.
But in the way reality shifts quietly beneath your feet, and suddenly nothing feels as steady as it did before.
Everything was the same.
And yet—
Nothing was.
Kai still texted her in the mornings.
Still called her at night.
Still showed up in the small ways that had slowly become part of her life.
But now—
There was something else between them.
A countdown.
Unspoken.
But always there.
Two weeks.
That was all the time they had before everything changed.
Amara tried not to think about it.
She really did.
She buried herself in preparation—packing, planning, organizing things she didn’t even need to organize.
Anything to avoid the one thing she couldn’t control.
Leaving.
Kai handled it differently.
He didn’t avoid it.
He didn’t pretend it wasn’t happening.
But he also didn’t let it take over everything.
He still laughed with her.
Still teased her.
Still made their time feel… normal.
And somehow—
That made it harder.
Because it reminded her of what she was about to lose.
One evening, they sat by the river.
The same place they had started going to when the city felt too loud.
The water moved slowly, reflecting the fading light of the sky.
Amara hugged her knees, staring out at the surface.
Kai sat beside her, close enough that their shoulders brushed.
Neither of them spoke for a while.
Because sometimes—
Silence said enough.
“I wish time would slow down,” Amara said finally.
Kai glanced at her.
“It always does when you want it to,” he said softly.
She let out a small, humorless laugh.
“Not enough.”
“No,” he admitted. “Never enough.”
She turned slightly toward him.
“Do you ever think about what happens after?”
He didn’t need to ask what she meant.
“All the time,” he said.
“And?”
He hesitated.
“And I don’t like not knowing.”
That surprised her.
“You?” she said. “Mr. ‘we’ll figure it out’?”
He smiled faintly.
“That doesn’t mean I’m not thinking about it.”
She studied him.
“What are you thinking?”
He exhaled slowly.
“I’m thinking… I don’t want this to turn into something that slowly fades.”
Her chest tightened.
“Me neither.”
“I’ve seen it happen,” he continued. “People try to hold on, but distance changes things. Priorities shift. Conversations get shorter. Effort gets harder.”
Each word felt heavier than the last.
“And then one day,” he added quietly, “it just… isn’t the same anymore.”
Amara looked away.
“Are you saying that’s what’s going to happen to us?”
“I’m saying it’s possible.”
The honesty stung.
But she didn’t look away from it.
“Then why are we trying?” she asked.
Kai turned to her fully.
“Because it’s also possible that it won’t.”
Her breath caught.
“That’s not very certain.”
“Love isn’t certain,” he said. “It never is.”
She swallowed.
“Then how do you know it’s worth it?”
He looked at her.
Really looked at her.
“Because of how I feel when I’m with you,” he said.
Her heart skipped.
“And that doesn’t change just because you’re not standing next to me.”
The words settled deep inside her.
“But it might,” she whispered.
Kai shook his head.
“Only if we let it.”
She wanted to believe that.
She really did.
But belief wasn’t easy for her.
“I don’t want to become someone who waits for messages that don’t come,” she said quietly.
Kai’s expression softened.
“You won’t.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I won’t let that happen.”
There it was again.
His certainty.
The thing that made her feel safe…
And scared at the same time.
Because what if he was wrong?
“What if it’s not enough?” she asked.
He paused.
“Then we’ll know we tried.”
That answer—
It wasn’t perfect.
But it was real.
And somehow—
That mattered more.
Days passed faster than either of them wanted.
One week left.
The countdown grew louder.
Every moment felt heavier.
More important.
Even the smallest things started to matter.
The way he said her name.
The way she laughed at his jokes.
The way their hands found each other without thinking.
It all felt like something they were trying to memorize.
As if remembering it perfectly could somehow make it last longer.
The night before she left—
They didn’t make plans.
They didn’t need to.
They both knew.
Amara arrived at his apartment just after sunset.
The door opened before she could knock.
Kai stood there, like he had been waiting.
Neither of them spoke.
They didn’t need to.
She stepped inside.
And before she could say anything—
He pulled her into a hug.
Tight.
Not desperate.
But real.
She held onto him just as firmly.
Because this—
This moment—
Was already starting to feel like something she would miss.
They stayed like that longer than usual.
Not rushing.
Not pulling away.
Just… holding on.
Eventually, they moved apart.
But not far.
“Hey,” he said softly.
“Hey.”
The word felt heavier than it ever had before.
They spent the evening together.
No distractions.
No phones.
No outside world.
Just them.
They talked.
About everything.
Memories.
Fears.
What-ifs.
Things they had never said before.
“Do you think we would’ve met if things were different?” Amara asked at one point.
Kai tilted his head.
“What do you mean?”
“Like… if we lived in different cities from the start. Or if that day at the bus stop never happened.”
He thought for a moment.
“Maybe not,” he said.
She nodded slowly.
“That’s kind of scary.”
“Why?”
“Because it means something this important… could have just never happened.”
Kai looked at her.
“Or it means it was meant to happen exactly like it did.”
She smiled faintly.
“You believe that?”
“I believe we’re here now,” he said.
And that was enough.
Later, as the night grew quieter, they found themselves sitting on the floor again.
The same place.
The same space.
But everything felt different.
Because now—
There was an ending attached to it.
“I don’t want to say goodbye tomorrow,” Amara whispered.
Kai’s chest tightened.
“Then don’t think of it like that.”
“Then what is it?”
He hesitated.
“A pause.”
She shook her head slightly.
“It doesn’t feel like a pause.”
“I know.”
Silence.
Then—
“I’m scared,” she admitted.
He reached for her hand.
“I know.”
“What if this changes everything?”
“It will,” he said honestly.
Her heart dropped slightly.
“But that doesn’t mean it ends everything,” he added.
She looked at him.
“You really believe that?”
“I believe in us,” he said.
And that—
That was the hardest thing for her to accept.
Because believing in something meant risking losing it.
But not believing…
Meant never really having it at all.
The night passed too quickly.
Morning came quietly.
Too quietly.
The world didn’t stop.
Even though it felt like it should have.
Amara stood by the door, her bag at her feet.
Kai stood in front of her.
Neither of them spoke at first.
Because there were no words big enough.
“I guess this is it,” she said softly.
Kai shook his head.
“No.”
She looked at him.
“It’s not ‘it,’” he said. “It’s just… different.”
Her eyes filled slightly.
“I don’t know how to do this.”
He stepped closer.
“Neither do I.”
“Then how—”
“We figure it out,” he said.
She let out a small, shaky breath.
“That’s your answer to everything.”
He smiled faintly.
“Because it’s the only honest one.”
She nodded slowly.
Then—
She stepped forward.
Wrapped her arms around him.
And held on.
Tighter than before.
Like she was trying to memorize the feeling.
The warmth.
The closeness.
The safety.
He held her just as tightly.
Because he knew—
This was the start of something new.
Not an ending.
But something harder.
Something that would test everything they had built.
She pulled back slowly.
Their eyes met.
“I’ll call you,” she said.
“I know.”
“Don’t forget me.”
His expression softened.
“That’s not possible.”
She smiled through the emotion.
Then—
She left.
And just like that—
The distance began.
Not all at once.
But in steps.
Miles.
Moments.
Time.
And for the first time—
They weren’t just measuring love in heartbeats…
They were measuring it in distance.
And hoping—
It would be enough.
To be continued… 💕
