CHAPTER FIVE Two days later Debbie was taken out of her jail cell. She was led down a small hall of the jail to the cellar. Next she was forced to go into a small, dark cell where there was no light. Looking at the guard who had brought her there, she pleaded, "Don't leave me here. I can't stand it all alone. I hate the darkness. Please, don't leave me here like this." The guard didn't reply. But when she clung to him he shrugged her off. "Get off me," he demanded. He left her alone. The minutes seemed to crawl by like hours. She wondered how much more of this torture she could take.
