Chapter 7: A Dangerous Game of Flirting

947 Words
(Jason’s POV): I noticed that one of the sales clerks had a mating mark on her neck, but the other one did not. She therefore became my target. I approached her at the desk, and immediately asked her name. “Candy.” “Oh, what a beautiful name for a beautiful girl.” She blushed. I gestured to where Josephine is sitting. “Do you see that lovely lady over there? She is getting married to my alpha, and it is really important that I make her happy.” “Oh, so she isn’t with you?” Candy asked, expectantly. “No,” I confirmed, giving her my best charming smile. I looked Candy up and down. “I like the ladies a little bit different than Josephine. Red hair is my favorite.” Candy smiled, and gently pushed her long red hair back, so that I could see her un-marked neck. “It is?” “Yes.” Candy looked into my eyes, and blushed again. “I wish I could make plans to take you on a date tonight, but my alpha won’t let me go anywhere until I’ve made his bride happy. Is there anything you think you can do to help me get her the dress she wants? I am assuming the other bride hasn’t paid for it yet.” Candy thought for a moment and smiled. “Let me go talk to the owner.” Perfect. **** (Cassie’s POV): I quickly took off that monstrosity of a dress and approached the counter to pay for it. I can’t believe that I had been so impulsive as to declare the dress mine, but my mate was going to choose someone over me, I wasn’t about to make it easy for him. They could have their happily ever after with a different dress. My mate could deal with his bride’s whining and crocodile tears on his own; it was a small price to pay for ignoring the Moon Goddess’s will. As I approached the counter, I saw my mate talking to one of the sales clerks. Even with my werewolf hearing, I couldn’t make out everything that they were saying, but their body language coupled with what I could hear made it clear enough. My mate was going to try to flirt his way into her pants so that he could get my dress. What a disgusting mate the Goddess had paired me with. To openly flirt with an innocent sales clerk in front of both his bride and his mate? Wow. That is brazen. Thankfully, when the clerk returned with the owner, I knew I was going to win this round. The owner was a member of our pack, so I could mindlink with him. I sent him a quick message, and he paled. He turned to my mate. “I’m sorry, Sir, but the dress has been claimed by Ms. Semberton.” My mate turned to me with anger in his eyes, but I smirked. I saw him leave and his bride leave the store. “That will be $10,525.” My heart stopped. “Um, what?” “The cost of the dress. $10,525.” Oh, goddess. What had I done. I was a newly-graduated college student. I had savings from working part-time jobs over the years, but $10,000 would nearly wipe me out. Was it worth giving up my savings for a tiny bit of revenge on my unworthy mate? I sighed and handed over my credit card. I suppose I didn’t have a choice at this point. After paying, I said goodbye to my mom and Mike’s mom, and walked the short distance to my car. Right before I got to the garage, I felt someone grab my arm and push me against a wall. “Hello, Mate.” My pulse quickened as I stared into his beautiful eyes. “What do you want?” I asked impatiently. “What did you do back there?” “What do you mean?” “Oh, don’t play innocent with me. I know you said something to the owner. I saw his eyes glaze over. What did you do?” “I simply reminded him that he and I have been members of the same pack for a long time, and we both know each other’s secrets. If he wanted to make sure his wife didn’t hear some of his, he needed to remember who his loyalty belonged to.” “You threatened to expose him for cheating on his wife? Wow. That’s a low blow.” “As if offering to f--- the innocent salesclerk so you could steal my dress was any better.” “A guy has to do what a guy has to do.” “Wow. That’s your defense. What on earth was the Moon Goddess thinking pairing us together.” “I have no idea.” "Wait... wouldn't his wife already know he was cheating? Wouldn't she feel it?" I roll my eyes. I love that his first reaction to me questioning the mate bond is to focus on someone else cheating. "Not that it matters, but his wife isn't his fated mate. She wouldn't feel it." I pushed my mate out of my way. “Have a nice life, um ---” “Jason. My name is Jason.” “Not nice to meet you, Jason. But have a nice life.” With that, I proudly walked away and got in my car, with my new, very ugly, but suddenly very worth it revenge wedding dress. As I drove away, I hoped no one could see the single tear that fell down my cheek.
