Chapter 16 Reward

THE ATLANTIC WAS POUNDING along Virginia Beach, that December afternoon as Vicki and Dean drove along the beach road. Dean had not wanted to accompany Vicki on this, possibly her last visit for a time, to the Purnells.
“I ought to be back in the hangar tuning up Marietta,” he fretted, as their taxi bucked the ocean wind. “Besides, I’ll be in your way.”
“You contributed to solving the Purnells’ troubles,” Vicki said warmly. “I want them to see that beautiful bandage on your hand—my hero!”
Dean grunted but he looked pleased. The Purnells’ brown house hove into view, backed by the tall pines.
“Remember the first time we saw this house, and we saw a young girl come out and run down the beach?” Vicki asked dreamily. “What a lot has happened since then!”
