IT WAS STIMULATING to be out at the airport this bright, blowing Monday morning. Here were bare fields, vast empty sky—and planes, roaring in or away. Vicki tingled in the cold wind and breathed in the smell of sea and gasoline. She hurried along to the airport buildings, excited at belonging to this powerful, far-flung web of aviation. In the Stewardess Lounge, she signed in and picked up a letter from home. Then she headed for another building and the office of Assistant Superintendent of Flight Stewardesses Ruth Benson. That sleek young woman, seated at a desk, was Vicki’s adored boss. Miss Benson looked up at Vicki’s knock and smiled at her out of brilliant gray eyes. “Good morning, Miss Benson.
