CHAPTER 11— Welcome The Dark
The night was quieter than usual, but Eliana didn’t relax. Her pulse raced as she followed Rafe through a maze of narrow streets, each one shadowed and slick from earlier rain.
“Tonight, you don’t just observe,” Rafe said, voice low and precise. “You act. A small move, a single decision, could save or enda life. Yours included.”
Eliana swallowed hard. She wanted to argue, wanted to back out, but his eyes pinned her. Not with heat, not with proximity but with expectation. A silent command that left no room for hesitation.
They reached a dimly lit corner. Across the street, two men lingered near a warehouse entrance, suspicious glances scanning the area. Rafe’s gaze flicked to her.
“Your call,” he said quietly. “Do we approach, or do we wait?”
Eliana’s hands trembled. Her mind raced through every lesson he’d given her—reading shadows, anticipating movement, noticing detail. Her eyes locked on the men’s shoes, then the way they shifted weight. She felt a strange thrill: this was real. Immediate. Dangerous. And she had the power to influence it.
“Wait,” she said finally, voice steady. “They’re expecting someone. If we move too soon, we’ll tip them off.”
Rafe nodded once, approving but silent. He stepped slightly forward, letting her observation guide the action.
Minutes later, the men moved toward the street, distracted by a passing car. Rafe and Eliana slipped into the alley behind them, silent, calculated. Eliana’s heart pounded, not from fear, but from exhilaration. She was doing it. She was participating. Surviving.
“Not bad,” Rafe murmured, voice low but carrying weight. “You noticed before I did. That’s rare.”
Eliana swallowed, cheeks warm. Approval from him wasn’t easy-earned. And now she understood—it wasn’t about being close, it wasn’t about chemistry in the air; it was about trust, precision, and shared awareness.
They emerged from the alley moments later, unseen, unheard. Rafe’s eyes scanned the streets before he spoke. “You passed the first test. But tomorrow, the stakes increase. Always remember...attention is your weapon. Indecision is fatal.”
Eliana nodded, breath still quick, pulse racing. For the first time, she felt like more than a bystander. She felt like a participant in his world.
And in the darkness of the city, side by side with the Midnight Ghost, she realized that being chosen didn’t mean powerless—it meant awakened.
