BREATHING DANGER

BREATHING DANGER The hallway stretched ahead—dark, narrow, humming with the kind of silence that only followed violence. Dust drifted from the shattered door behind them, settling like snow over the bodies on the ground. Eliana’s breathing was steady. Steadier than Rafe expected. He heard it — the calm hidden inside the adrenaline. She was adapting. She was getting used to him. To this. Rafe moved first, checking the corners with quick, precise glances. Eliana stayed close enough that his coat brushed her arm. Not clinging. Just… aligned with him, like her instinct had synced with his pace. “We’re not trapped,” Rafe murmured, scanning ahead. “They came from below. Means the upper floors are still clean.” “How many do you think are here?” “Enough,” he said. “But not enough to take us.” Eliana didn’t miss the us. It warmed something inside her she didn’t have time to name. A clang echoed in the distance — metal hitting concrete. Rafe’s hand shot out, gently catching her elbow and pulling her into a shadowed alcove. His body shielded hers completely, their breaths mingling in the tight space. Eliana whispered, “Are they coming?” “No,” he murmured, eyes trained ahead. “They’re searching the lower units. They don’t know this floor connects to the old ventilation shaft.” She blinked. “Ventilation…?” “That’s our exit.” Before she could respond, he reached up and pulled open a rusted panel above them. The faint smell of cold metal and dust drifted down. “Go,” he said gently. “You first.” His eyes flicked to hers — sharp, warm, irritated, impressed. “What if someone’s waiting on the other end?” he asked quietly. “Then you should go first,” she answered. “…if you want to keep me alive.” Rafe went still. The kind of stillness predators mastered — not danger, but calculation. And something else. Something he didn’t let himself feel. “Eliana,” he said slowly, “don’t make me choose between keeping you safe and arguing with you.” She looked up at him, stubborn, steady. “Choose safety. Go.” A low, barely-there sound escaped him — almost a laugh, almost disbelief. He climbed up into the shaft. Eliana followed. The space was cramped, forcing them close. Too close. Rafe crawled ahead, muscles shifting under his black shirt, shoulders filling the narrow tunnel. Every movement was controlled, silent. He glanced back to check on her. “You okay?” “Yes.” But she wasn’t watching the tunnel. She was watching him. He noticed — his gaze lingered a heartbeat longer than necessary — then he moved on. Voices echoed faintly below them. Boots. Radios. Sharp commands. They kept going until Rafe pushed open another grate, dropping silently into a darker, colder floor. Eliana landed beside him, lighter on her feet now. “From here,” Rafe whispered, “we run. No noise. No hesitation.” “Rafe?” He paused, turning. “What?” She swallowed, the dim emergency light catching the cut on his cheek — the one she wanted to touch. “You… protected me. Back there.” His expression didn’t change. But something in his eyes did — a soft, burning shift. “It wasn’t protection, Eliana.” She frowned. “Then what was it?” He stepped closer. One step. Two. Close enough that the heat of him brushed her skin again. “It was instinct.” Her breath caught. His voice dropped. “And I don’t have instinct like that for anyone else.” Before she could answer... A gun c****d behind them. “Found you.” Rafe pulled her behind him instantly, posture snapping into lethal focus. And just like that... The hunt began again.
