NIGHT QUESTIONS
The city was drenched in rain, neon reflections stretching across puddles like fractured light. Eliana kept her bag close, moving cautiously, but her mind wasn’t just on the danger...it was on him.
Rafe walked beside her, tall, silent, every movement deliberate, his presence filling the space like a shadow that both protected and unnerved her.
She hesitated, then dared the question. “Rafe…” Her voice was soft, uncertain, but laced with curiosity. “Why… why do you only come out at night?”
He paused, gaze narrowing slightly, scanning the street before settling on her. His voice was low, smooth, deliberate. “The night keeps people like me… unseen.”
“And people like you?” she pressed, fidgeting with her bag strap, heart racing, not just from danger, but from the nearness of him. “Is it the job… or… something else?”
Rafe’s lips twitched in the faintest smirk, like he considered teasing her, but restraint won. “It’s both,” he said finally. “The dark is mine. It allows me to… control what needs controlling.”
Eliana swallowed, aware of the subtle heat between them—the quiet tension of proximity, the brush of his coat as he adjusted his stance, the deliberate steadiness of his gaze. Dangerous, and yet, magnetic.
She let the silence linger for a moment, realizing she was treading familiar territory in unfamiliar ways—danger, curiosity, and an unspoken pull all mixed together.
“Does it ever scare you?” she asked, daring. “Being alone in it… or… being part of it?”
Rafe’s eyes softened fractionally, almost imperceptibly, before hardening again. “I like the control,” he admitted, voice low. “But having someone like you… changes it. The night doesn’t scare me. You...sometimes, you do.”
Her chest warmed at the confession, though his meaning remained a mystery. The city stretched around them, dark, wet, alive and in the middle of it, Eliana felt a different kind of danger, one that had nothing to do with bullets or shadows.
A beat passed. Then he nodded toward the next street. “Move. We don’t have much time.”
Eliana followed, heart racing, mind spinning—not from the threat outside, but from the magnetism of the man beside her, and the fact that she had just touched the edges of his secret world.
