NIGHTFALL

CHAPTER 10 — NIGHTFALL THREAT The streets glistened under the dim glow of neon signs, puddles reflecting fractured light like broken glass. Eliana kept her eyes sharp, scanning the shadows while walking a step behind Rafe. Every sound, the distant rev of an engine, the scrape of a metal door, the clatter of a trash can set her nerves on edge. Rafe didn’t speak, didn’t glance back, but his presence was a steady anchor. Unlike before, it wasn’t about heat or proximity,it was a commanding certainty, the kind that made people freeze without realizing why. “Keep your focus,” he instructed, finally breaking the silence. “The man from before wasn’t acting alone.” Eliana’s pulse quickened. Her eyes darted to a figure lurking near a corner, partially hidden in shadow. The man hesitated when he saw them, then moved faster, slipping into an alley. “Follow me,” Rafe said, his tone sharp but controlled. He led her along the sidewalk, eyes scanning every potential exit, every hidden threat. As they approached the alley, the figure stopped, turned, and drew a knife. Eliana froze...fear pulsing through her but Rafe didn’t flinch. In a swift, fluid motion, he intercepted the man, disarming him with controlled precision. The attacker crumpled to the ground, eyes wide in shock. Eliana exhaled shakily, heart hammering. “He… he could have...” “He wouldn’t have made it,” Rafe said, voice low, steady, uncompromising. “Not while I’m here.” She realized then that Rafe’s protection wasn’t just about being nearby,it was anticipation, skill, and dominance. Danger didn’t exist around him; it existed for him to control. “Do you understand why I brought you out tonight?” he asked, finally letting his gaze meet hers. Not a look of desire this time this was focus, instruction, assessment. “Yes,” she whispered. “I see it now.” “Good,” he said, stepping to the side, allowing her to continue observing. “Tonight, you saw the stakes. Tomorrow, you learn to move within them. And you’ll realize that surviving my world… is about reading people, reading streets, reading shadows.” Alone for a moment as he dealt with the unconscious attacker, Eliana’s thoughts raced. Fear mingled with awe. Danger was real. Rafe’s power was absolute. And in the darkness of the city streets, she realized something else: she was alive in a way she’d never been before. Because being chosen by the Midnight Ghost wasn’t just protection,it was immersion. And Eliana knew, fully, that there was no turning back.
