FIRST STEP OUTSIDE

CHAPTER 9 — FIRST STEP OUTSIDE Eliana’s heart pounded like a drum in her chest as she followed Rafe through the dim corridors. The elevator ride down was silent, the only sound her uneven breaths and the soft click of their shoes against the polished floor. “Stay alert,” Rafe instructed, not looking at her. “Eyes open. Ears open. Your life depends on noticing what others don’t.” She nodded, gripping the edge of her oversized sweater. This wasn’t just about fear anymore. It was about awareness, survival… and trust. The lobby doors opened, revealing the quiet night street. Rain slicked asphalt reflected neon lights from distant signs. Eliana’s breath hitched as she scanned the shadows, every movement suddenly amplified. Rafe moved ahead, silent, purposeful. He didn’t hold her hand, didn’t touch her, but his presence felt like a shield, a pulse she could feel behind her ribs. Not the “heat” she was used to, but a commanding certainty, an invisible force that kept danger at bay. He stopped at the curb and gestured. “You watch. You notice. You move only when I tell you to. Do you understand?” “Yes,” she whispered, pulse racing. A man rounded the corner a few streets away, the same one who had tried to enter the building. This time, he froze when he saw Rafe standing across the street, sharp eyes locked on him. Without a word, Rafe’s figure seemed to expand, dominating the space, and the man retreated, swallowed by shadows. Eliana exhaled, awe and fear colliding inside her. “You… you didn’t even touch him.” “No need,” Rafe said simply. “Control isn’t about force. It’s about perception. Power. Presence.” Her mind spun, realizing that in his world, survival wasn’t about fighting, it was about seeing, predicting, and commanding without hesitation. And suddenly, she wanted to see, to predict, to survive with him. Rafe’s gaze flicked toward her, assessing. Not like before, not possessive but calculating, like measuring whether she could keep up. “Tomorrow, we move further. You will walk beside me. You will notice everything. You will learn quickly or you will be left behind.” Her chest tightened. Not from fear, but from the undeniable thrill that coursed through her veins. Being in his world was terrifying. And intoxicating. She realized, then, that danger didn’t scare her, not completely. Rafe did. And she wanted him to. He started walking again, and this time, she followed willingly, senses sharpened, pulse alive with the rhythm of the night. Because being chosen by the Midnight Ghost wasn’t just about protection,it was about awakening to a world she had never imagined. And she was ready to step fully into it.
