The Soldier Who Gave Him Acceptance #4 The Soldier Series Prologue As the sun rose from its slumber, climbing into the sky from behind the orange and yellow dunes, the ripples of sand almost like waves on the sea, as far as the eye could see. Only this place was far away from water, the heat of the desert scorching the people born here, with nowhere else to run too, those who had remained in the hostile, barren land, destroyed by war. Others had come here, those who sort to make a difference, to help the less fortunate, charity workers from the west who arrived to help, giving food, clothes, medicine, and medical care. The only others who remained in this desolate place were of a different breed to most, the soldiers who once came her to invade, and set the oppressed population free from the tyrant dictator who oppressed the populous, had retuned as specialists, to protect those who sort to do good becoming the targets of evil men, who preferred the life they once lived, unable to accept freedom for everyone the preferred to live in tyranny and mayhem with a deep rooted hatred of the western world. The morning sun shone through the long narrow open window, the mesh off white curtain blowing in the hot breeze that brought no relief from the heat and humidity, even at dawn. Grains of sand flew through the window, the only source of ventilation in the place where aircon did not exist, leaving a fine splattering of dust in their wake, a permanent fixture in the small sparsely furnished room. Haley woke covered in a film of sweat once more, her black hair matted to her head from the heat, the olive tone of her skin from living in the desolate desert, working close protection detail for the men and women who arrived here, wanting nothing more than to help the poor and needy, whilst putting their own existence in permanent danger. She stretched out her aching muscles, her green sleeveless tank top clung to her body falling just below the waist of her black standard military issue underwear. The dog tags round her neck clinked together as she sat up and ran her fingers through her shoulder length hair, the ink on her arms glistened from the body’s fluids that seeped through her pours like a dripping tap in the heat. Three more days, that was all that remained of her time in the hostile country, three more days till she returned home, free from her close protection duties. She had served her country well, two tours in Afghanistan, to find her only choice of work upon leaving the military was to place herself back in the firing line, working Close Protection. But recently that had all changed, when her old buddy ‘Cigs’ had reached out to her, inviting her to be a Mole, and she had secured a place on the TV show Special Forces: Have You Got What It Takes. Soon she would be with her brothers in arms once more as she infiltrated the group of contestants, giving feedback on the weak and the strong. A small smile teetered on her lips, because in a twist of fate, he would be there, working off camera as back up crew to her brothers in arms, the man who she had once protected, befriended, who lacked confidence, yet had the appearance of an abundance of it. The man, who she understood, their childhoods having obvious similarity’s that led her to the military life, and him, to feel unwanted. She had slept with him multiple times, a friend with mind blowing benefits, when she was home, and not in the desert. Maybe this time it would be different, because Haley had made the life changing decision, she would never return to this life again, this time, when she returned back to good old blighty when the show finished, she would remain, and give herself, and him what he wanted yet never asked for. A chance.
