”Alpha Hayley! Alpha Hayley! Alpha Hayley!” Hayley woke up to the banging on her door and her name being called.
”Alpha we are being attacked by rogues,” Tyler who was standing with some pack warriors said to Hayley when she stepped out of her quarters.
”s**t!” she cursed panicked. She had not been able to connect to her wolf so she couldn't shift. She was the alpha of the pack yet her pack was under attack and she couldn't shift as she could not still connect with her wolf who stopped speaking to her because she refused to approach their mate.
She had been thinking that after some time had passed, when she gets mated to another, Lucy would come around but who would have thought that there would be a sudden attack on her pack.
”Lucy” Hayley tried calling out to her wolf
”Could you please help me out here?”
”silence”
”Our pack is under attack and as alpha, we should fight alongside them” she pleaded once more once and was met with yet another silence.
”When we took over as alpha, we swore to protect this pack remember?” hearing Hayley talk about the oath they took, Lucy whines a little but still didn't say a word.
Seeing that getting through to her wolf wouldn't be possible, Hayley began to question her beta and the warriors he brought with him.
”How many rogues do we have out there?”
”About 50 of them”
”50?” Hayley asked surprised. Rogues are werewolves that did not belong to any pack usually because they were exiled from the packs they once belonged to. Some of them settled among humans trying to start their lives afresh, some roamed, some tried getting accepted into new parks while the rest who still thought themselves right and bore a grudge moved in small groups of at most 10 werewolves attacking packs with hopes of killing the alpha and their leader (whoever kills the alpha) becomes the new alpha of the conquered pack. Rogues could never move in groups of more than 10 werewolves because without an alpha present to keep them in check, werewolves who usually resort to a show of strength to solve any issue would some likely attack each other with every one of them trying to prove he is stronger. When a group of rogues comes together, they usually take orders from the strongest amongst them. The only thing that can bring a large group of them together, is having a common goal. And this time, she felt they had a common goal.
”Yes, about 50 of them, their attack seems somewhat organized and they also seem to be increasing ”. Tyler answered confirming her thoughts.
”How many dead?”
”None for now”.
”Casualties?”
”About 45, out of which 10 who are mostly pups are heavily injured”.
Having known the situation of things, Hayley began issuing out orders to her beta and the warriors around her the fear she first felt because she couldn't shift long gone.
”Gwen, Ralph gather the women and child to the safe house and have three of our strongest warriors guard them. Make sure the pregnant women are without injuries even our warriors among them should be locked up in the safe house too. Sylvie is an oddball, make sure she is not out in the fields” Tyler looked at Hayley his eyes full of gratitude when he had her orders.
”Stock the safe houses with supplies and...weapons” she added after hesitating. Report back to me through the mind link”. She continued.
”Derek, Tala I need you guys to hold down things. Have the elementals fight with the warriors at the forefront peradventure the need for their gifts arise. On no account should their gifts be used unless the need arises. The goal is to have minimal or no deaths”. Elementals are werewolves who can either control fire or water. Using their strengths leaves them weak as they usually need about two to recover fully. They are trained as warriors and thought to harness their powers. They only use their gifts as a last resort.
”Raina, divide the healers into two groups. Have some of them go treat the heavily injured on the grounds and the rest should remain in the pack hospital and treat the slightly who will be carried back by some warriors. After treatment, if they are still fit to fight, send them back to the grounds”. The healers are wolves with the special ability to alleviate pain by taking the pain into themselves. It is a very painful process that leaves them weak and vulnerable but they recover quickly unlike the elementals. Some healers can see, reconstruct and take away memories too but they are prohibited from doing so unless they are interrogating offenders. Only a few healers like Hayley can reconstruct and take away memories as it runs in her blood. Her ancestors could too. Aside from her, the ones who had anything to do with memories only saw them.
During the early days Hayley took over as alpha, she made the healers learn how to treat werewolves that didn't involve them using their gifts. In case a war broke out, if they only kept transferring the pain to themselves, they would be exhausted and there would be no one to heal the injured. They learned how the human body and that of werewolves worked. When it came to healing, Storm moon pack ranked #1.
”Rafe, you are my head tracker. Get the fastest runners, move from the sides, and snoop around for clues as to why we are being attacked, and why the attack is organized. Also, have some of the fast runners ready if need be to ask for help”.
”Tyler, you stick with me”.
”As old times”. Tyler said shifting into his wolf while Hayley’s eyes turned blue showing that she had let her gifts surface.
The sun was already descending in the sky, as it already approached evening. The woods where the pack members usually go for a run in their wolf worm was a mess as dead bodies were littered in it. The fight had ended, the rogues had finally been rounded off. The dead ones were being heaped together so that they could be burnt while, some were taking in for interrogation.
Hayley stood in her office in the packhouse looking outside the window with a distant look in her eyes smoking. A bloodied rag was messily tied around her left arm and lots of injures could be seen all over her body. She reeked of blood and cigarette.
”Hey!” Tyler said walking up to her looking slightly alarmed when he took in her appearance.
”Have you seen Sylvie?” she asked already knowing who he was as she had perceived his scent from afar.
”Yes, thanks for today”
”Anytime” She answered throwing the cigar stud into the ash tray to join the pile there.
”How many are dead?” she asked lighting another stick.
”80. 76 rogues and 4 of our own” Tyler replied and a dark look crossed Hayley’s eyes
”How many rogues were captured?”
”7”
”So the number of rogues were really increasing? Make sure you keep them alive I want answers”.
”Hayley, why didn't you shift?” Tyler suddenly asked.
”I didn't want to” She answered after taking a long drag.
”You didn't want to or you couldn't shift?”
”What do you mean I couldn't shift?” Hayley asked uneasy
”I have known you for years and I have been watching you. You have not shifted in 6months. What's wrong?”
”Nothing!”
”Nothing Hayley? Let's keep this whole s**t aside, you are like family to me and I know you. Aside from knowing you, I'm worried too. You know going to fight in your human form, you were clearly disadvantaged yet you did. Why? You only relied on sheer strength and just your gifts which I know you didn't use or you won't be keeping those prisoners so what's wrong?”
”Nothing”
”Fine if it's actually nothing, then you are crazy you could have been killed out there”.
”Tyler do you know I could actually kill you?” Hayley turned from the window to face her beta before going to sit behind her desk.
”Yes, but you aren't a psychopath”
”I could start learning to be one now. After murdering you, your mate should be next I shouldn't leave anyone who would think of getting back at me” Hayley said in an alpha’s voice making Tyler suddenly feel cold and shiver.
”Hahaha” She suddenly laughed looking bitter and worn out as tears made their way down her face and she threw yet another cigar stud into the ashtray before lighting another and smoked in silence.
”You are right, I'm not a psychopath I don't go about killing. Lucy isn't speaking to me” she answered several minutes later.
”Why?” Tyler asked looking more worried than when she threatened to kill him.
