Chapter 10

” I met him” ”Who?” ”Walk with me,” Hayley said instead to her beta snuffing out the cigar in her hand on the ashtray and made her way to the door of her office ready to leave. ”Where to?” Tyler asked surprised taking in Hayley’s appearance. For someone, who took out time to pamper herself despite having a lot to do that sometimes, it got him amazed, it was quite unlike her to want to take a walk in tattered clothes that reeked of blood and smoke. The cream and ash-colored U-shaped bungalow that served as the pack hospital was well equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. The building stood at a corner, quite close to the main packhouse to allow accessibility in case of emergencies but also far enough to keep the smell of disinfectants away from the sensitive noses of the werewolves. The insides of the building were painted blue which gives off a cool but comforting feeling when one walked into it. Close to it, were rows of trees where the wolves could go for a run. ”Alpha” the healers bowed in greeting surprised, taking in Hayley’s appearance when they saw her enter the pack hospital that was filled with wounded werewolves with her beta following behind and resumed what they were doing when Hayley walked into the head healer's office. ”Alpha” the head healer greeted ”Enough with the formalities. How is everything coming along Raina?” ”Though some of our men were poisoned during the fight, it's a common poison and they have been detoxified. So far, everything is under control.” ”Okay,” Hayley said turning on her heels ”Alpha?” Raina hesitated making Hayley stop mid-step ”Can I take a look at your injuries? Your arm is still bleeding and the wounds on your body could use a little help” ”I’m fine Raina, it will heal. Monitor the poisoned wolves closely in case there is something else hidden under the common poison used on them. Those rogues wouldn't use something so easy to cure if they didn't have other intentions. Report any changes to me immediately”. Hayley was maneuvering her way around the hospital checking on wounded wolves when she heard a werewolf say: ”The alpha didn't shift throughout the fight how crazy is she to do something like that?” ”Lina dear, I wouldn't know”. ”Hmm I think we keep getting attacked because she has refused to be mated to anyone and now she's trying to get us killed” ”I know right?” the werewolf next in line to be attended to after Lina chipped in. ”If only she had agreed to get mated to a strong alpha and have him by her side, those other packs would know we are not to be messed with and stop all these” Lina continued. ”Lina” the healer who was attending to her called ”Sit still this is going to hurt a lot I need to reset your bone so it can heal properly. Since you said we are always being attacked, to defend yourself, you need to be in a good shape”. CRAACCCK! The sound of a bone being reset was heard immediately the healer finished speaking not giving Lina the time to prepare herself mentally and her screaming followed echoing down the hall. Tyler wanted to butt in when he heard the conservation but Hayley stopped him and turned around to leave the hospital that was when Lina and her crew saw her. Five crushed cigar studs lay on the floor around Hayley as she paced about smoking, the air around her suffocating. She had wanted to badly go for a run, to feel the wind caress her fur as she surrounds herself with the woody smelly that reminds her of him but Lucy didn't budge. So she settled for smoking. ”They are right about everything they said Tyler, this pack needs a strong male alpha” Hayley suddenly said. ”But...” ”They need an alpha who would help to keep the other packs in check, not someone weak” ”The moon goddess...” ”Stop! Don't just bring the moon goddess into this Tyler” Hayley interrupted him for the second time in a row. ”What exactly do you wanna say ’the moon goddess knows best?’ or ’the moon goddess has great plans for me?’ What exactly are those great plans when she knows how I have managed to barely hold it all in, and try my best to hang in there and do what's best for the pack while waiting for her and the mate she has designed for me and she gives me a human as a mate? Why has she chosen to make things so difficult for me? Like I didn't choose this life for myself yet, I have been working so hard ever since to make things work and she still denies me the commonest joy of spending forever with my mate? How am I supposed to present a human to the pack as my mate when I know what we need is a strong mate? You know what? I will just go for a drink”. Tyler tried processing what he had just heard while watching her retreating back. She seemed lonelier than usual and smaller to him. The time a werewolf met its mate was a very happy occasion for them and many of them went right into consummating the bond because they spent a lot of time searching for each other the one person holds the other half of their soul. Even though they could be mated to another who isn't their mate, it could not be compared to when one is mated to one’s mate. But then, she could understand what Hayley was going through. What was the moon goddess thinking giving the alpha of their pack a human mate? The alpha of their pack couldn't be human. Humans are weaker than wolves and would not withstand the pressure. He would be vulnerable and definitely become the pack's weak point and this was not what they needed. They needed a strong mate for their alpha could stand alongside their alpha and his authority won't be questioned. Someone who could defend his position and protect the pack if challenged to a fight and a human was no way near fit for these roles. As the beta, he suddenly didn't know what to do. He was a strong believer in the mate bond but then, he couldn't just lead his pack into a suicide mission by making the alpha take a human as a mate.
