The media attention and the revival of Brennon's stories brought back his old rivals and critics yet again. Some speculated on the true success story of Brennon and his actual difference made through the charity. Brennon and Sandra honestly faced the issue and continued showing their dedication through actionable commitment. The second big comeback of Brennon was very positive by its nature — more in the public eye than ever before, yet focusing on his core values and mission, it allowed him to be more effective in the advocacy of causes that he cared about, and he inspired others through his platform. Sandra was key when dealing with media relations for both the company and the charity, ensuring the messaging remained both consistent and effective. She was an absolute asset and an expert when it came to public relations. One evening, while seated at their office, reviewing the latest progress reports, Brennon reflected for a moment. "Looking through this data, reading these success stories of the charity's programs, it's amazing to be here," he said, aiming at them. "We have had the most tremendous journey for the past five years, which wouldn't have been possible without your help." Sandra smiled, her eyes shining with the feeling of shared victory. "So much has been achieved, but there's so much to be done. We could go on to make a difference, and that's what keeps us on our feet." Brennon and Sandra were resolved to finally reach their dreams for the future. Opportunities and challenges met them afresh after their reappearance, though the conditions for a need for change lit a common way. There was splendor written all over with chandeliers, massive floral decorations, and an equally massive fanfare of a crowd—all well-dressed for the charity gala at the Grandview Estate. Brennon with Sandra was present, showcasing their company Golden Drops, and all the successes they have had. It was quite a red-letter day, both for charity and for their jewelry business, since it was a big second making their appearances to the public again. Brennon was dressed in a black shiny tuxedo, while Sandra was equally beautiful in an ankle-length gown shimmering in the magnified light of the event. They were making their way around the crowded ballroom, intermingling with other guests of some importance, sharing the recent accomplishments of their charity. The momentum in the room was high, but Brennon felt the growing anxiety that had come with the night. Something was happening tonight, something profound, and he did not know what it was. The setting for the gala was a very lively. Aside from the fact that the place was illuminated, there was a live performance of classical music creating a lush background of conversation and laughter that resonated in the room. Brennon and Sandra were in the middle of an important conversation with some potential donors when Brennon saw a figure that was very familiar to him. Alyssa Donovan stood across the room, beside the rich man—Victor Hoffman—the owner of the country's largest steel manufacturing company. Brennon felt a hit like a gust of wind seeing Alyssa at the side of Victor, evoking feelings that he had long tried to bury. Alyssa was stunning in a silver gown that highlighted her grace and beauty. The tailored suit made Victor imposing, and his manner spoke of money and power. Having seen Alyssa with another, much less someone like Victor, was quite a jolt for Brennon. Well, he could see that despite the many years of living apart, one glance at Alyssa stirred emotions he thought he was all done feeling. Sandra noticed Brennon’s sudden shift in focus and followed his gaze. "Brennon, is everything alright? You look like you've seen a ghost." Brennon breathed in deeply and tried to feign what was written plainly on his face. "Sandra, that's Alyssa Donovan over there. She's with Victor Hoffman." Sandra's eyes widened slightly as she surmised what the situation was. "Oh, what a turn of events. Do you want to go over and say hello? Brennon could almost hear the pounding of his heart as he considered it. "I. I don't know. I didn't expect her here, and this doesn't feel like a good idea." Sandra put her hand reassuringly over his. "Whatever you decide, I’m here to support you. Take a moment to think it over.”." Brennon nodded, understanding Sandra knew something, he heaved a sigh, made a choice, and headed towards Alyssa, who he hoped realized how complex situations could turn out to be more than he supposed they would, step by step and through the crowd he treaded—every step felt like walking back in time. By the time he came to Alyssa and Victor, Brennon had composed himself a bit. She spun as Brennon came into view, and her eyes widened in recognition. "Brennon Hulls," Alyssa replied, with a mix of surprise and hesitation shading her voice. "It's been quite a while." Brennon smiled a tasteful expression that cloaked a mix of longing and sadness. "Alyssa, good to see you. Never expected to run into you here." Alyssa's smile was warm but cautious. "Good to see you too. How have you been?" Having viewed the exchange very interestingly, Victor stepped forward, authority in his stride. "Brennon Hulls isn't it? I have heard so much about you. I must say, I'm quite impressed with all your successful business and charity foundation." Brennon nodded, trying to keep his cool. "Thank you, Mr. Hoffman. I'm here for Golden Drops and our work.". Victor's eyes cut razor-sharp, no doubt analyzing every single word from Brennon. "Well, Alyssa and I were just discussing some upcoming projects. I'm sure you understand the importance of maintaining focus." Brennon found Alyssa's eyes briefly, before shifting away at the unsaid words. "Yes, of course. I wouldn't want to interrupt." As their eyes met, Brennon thought he saw something in Alyssa’s gaze—regret?—before she turned back to Victor. "Victor's been very supportive of my current work. We've got some exciting plans." Victor placed a hand on Alyssa's back—an unmistakable mark of protection. "We should continue mingling, Alyssa. We have guests to attend to." Brennon winced at his mistake but maintained calm. "I understand. It was good seeing you again, Alyssa." She gave him a polite smile. "You too, Brennon. I hope you have a nice rest of your evening." Victor nodded sharply again. "Goodnight, Brennon." Brennon stood there and watched Alyssa and Victor turn to leave, watching them blend into the sea of faces, the finality hitting him: Alyssa was in a different world now, and all his unresolved feelings weren't his anymore. Sandra stepped next to Brennon, a picture of concern on her face. "Are you all right? I saw your expression. That must have been hard." Brennon nodded, though he still felt raw. "Yeah, I'm all right. Just…her coming around this time brought back a lot of memories. But things have changed." Sandra laid a soft touch on his shoulder. "It is normal to feel really strong emotions when you meet somebody from your past. However, you dealt with it pretty well. Let us keep our eyes focused on the rest of the evening and the positive influence we can continue to make." Brennon took a deep breath and nodded. "You're right. Thanks for being here, Sandra." The remainder of the evening was a bit blurry with conversation milling about. Brennon tried to pay interest, but his thoughts kept straying back to the incident with Alyssa and Victor. It reminded him how much had changed, how some things lay outside his control. One by one, the night drew on, and guests began to take their leave. Brennon and Sandra said their goodbyes as well, out into the night beyond Grandview Estate. Drama and poignancy marked the night, much like many years ago when life had served up its lessons about how messy human relations could get. At a deep level in his heart, Brennon knew that he still had feelings for Alyssa. Yet on equal terms, he had to temper it with the realism of how their lives were going, in totally different directions now.
