Chapter5

In the seclusion of his study, Brennon paused long enough to think about his decision to keep his secret. For him, golden tears were a reminder—of the pain he had actually felt, and of a miraculous gift he had received. Only Oscar was to know about it; the two discussed the ancillary effects of it and agreed to conceal it from others. He trusted Oscar thoroughly—the very old friend who had been one of his sole pillars of support through it all. And the golden tears' secret was indeed something heavy and indeed something valuable. It spoke of his emotional depth but could also be something that was potentially misused if found in the wrong hands. Brennon kept them hidden, and he had all but decided to keep the secret with his sad feelings—his own, knowing too well that pain was something that could be twisted into something dangerous. Later that day, Oscar visited the mansion. The old man's face seemed to frown with worry as he saw Brennon, who had spent the day engrossed in the business and charity proposals. "Last night, I heard about it. One of my assistants told me," Oscar began, his voice playful but personal, with the lingering overlay of years of friendship and wisdom. "So, how are you holding up? Brennon looked up from his work, his eyes reflecting sleepless nights. "I'm managing, Oscar. I've decided to focus on Golden Drops and leave the past behind me. I've also gathered the golden tears and stored them away. I shall be sending those off to you as soon as possible. I am counting on you to keep my secret." Oscar stopped, reflected, and nodded. "That's what you call a wise choice. All the gold has symbolisms attached to it, but it is your works and your heart which will really become your power." Brennon managed a grateful smile. "Thanks, Oscar. I couldn't have had a better mentor. Now, I want to be on my way to making a difference." Brennon felt a renewal of some purpose as Oscar left the mansion with the golden tears. They were signs of his heartache, but it was all in his past now. He had resolved to move on with his charity work and his life to try and create a future that would not be marred by this sorrow. This mansion was now more of a home, with breathtaking views and magnificent surroundings. Brennon knew his heartache was part of his soul but didn't wear a sign for his future. His focus was on creating positive change with Golden Drops, and that's where all his energy and passion would lie. There was a sure resolve deep in Brennon's heart now as he prepared to throw away his past and embrace his future as a new being. He would take his golden tears as reminders of the journey, but the true legacy would be in the touched lives and differences made in the world. It was Brennon Hulls's undying commitment to work that sealed his resolve to move on from Alyssa Donovan. Every day, he burrowed into the activities at Golden Drops, channeling his feelings into the development and success of his jewelry firm. The commitment to his work became his main focus, a distraction from the heartaches that he had gone through. Back at the office, Brennon was in his tracks. He made a point to attend every design meeting or marketing strategy underway in the company. He gave his presence in each department and, through his leadership, he injected an excellence drive among his people. Business started booming, and soon, new collections were a rage, with sales reaching unprecedented heights. This renewed energy also benefited Brennon's sister organization to the charity, Golden Drops. His work in the Empowerment Initiative—to empower poor communities and give them job opportunities—bore visible results. He was very hands-on regarding the way the charity was being run, making sure every project was guided with precision and impact. Although how things ended up with Alyssa did carry a slight emotional weight in his professional life, none of it could undermine his successes. Their paths continued to cross through the years at various events; he did whatever not to have contact. Each time that Alyssa and Victor Hoffman chanced to be at some event where Brennon was, he would move to the other side of the room, then remain with his work or whomever he was out supporting. One of the events that was truly impressive was a gala for the grand opening of a new art gallery. The interior decorations were masterpieces themselves as one would see in a fine art gallery, while the social function looked to be a roll-call of guests almost tantamount to the who's who in society. Naturally, Alyssa and Victor took part in the function, but Brennon remained out of the limelight so as to personally relate to potential investors and partners. As the evening progressed, Brennon became charming and professional, entertaining his guests with his business associates, boasting of the success of Golden Drops and all the good changes their charity had recently affected. Relationships were to be forged, opportunities increased for the company; he wasn't going to let the presence of Alyssa get in the way. In the following months, Golden Drops continued to thrive. The business built a reputation as a first-class jewelry brand, and its several charitable acts were recognized to be of value to society. Brennon's hard work clearly paid off through the results in terms of the financial success of the company and the meaningful contributions made to the community. Almost as a matter of habit, Brennon began to avoid Alyssa. He took comfort in knowing that he was finally moving on and that he was doing something worthy. Further glimpses of Alyssa would remind him of his past, but they were no longer big enough to be speed bumps. His commitment to his job gave him a reason he had not had before. After a very productive day of meetings and negotiations, Brennon returned to his mansion, accomplished. That house, with all its classy decor and views that sweep all around, speaks to the amount of effort and perseverance that had been put in. But the golden tears were hidden and remained so—a relic of a past he wanted desperately to leave behind. Brennon would habitually spend late nights poring over business reports and business plans. He spent hours poring over market trends, perfecting strategies, and making provisions for anything that might come next. Incessant work—its feel, smell, and activity—became a refuge and a distraction that helped him turn his mind away from thoughts of Alyssa. As the company celebrated the major milestone—the successful launching of a new jewelry line, which garnered large media attention—Brennon stepped back to think about how far along he had come. He felt very proud of himself; he thought this was the evidence of how resilient and determined one could be. The hassles in his path, including emotional chaos from his previous relationship, made him more focused and driven. Through the diligent efforts of Brennon, Golden Drops was growing, and so was its charity. He had been avoiding Alyssa and working on his professional and personal growth as part of a bigger journey: healing and becoming successful. It was in this successful career that Brennon was able to find solace in knowing he had chosen a path that aligned with his values and aspirations. The past no longer defined his future.
