Into the Abyss
Sophia's POV
"Stay with me, Sophia!" His voice was frantic, filled with raw desperation. Alexander’s hands were frantic as they pressed against my shoulder, the blood oozing through his fingers, staining his clothes, my clothes. I could hear the panic in his breath, feel his heart pounding against mine as he held me close, but everything else seemed so far away. The world was fading, slipping through my fingers like sand.
"I can't…" I gasped, my voice a mere whisper, barely audible. My head was spinning, the darkness creeping in around the edges of my vision. The surrounding room was a blur of chaos, too many people, too much danger.
“You can,” he growled, shaking me slightly, his eyes filled with something fierce, something I hadn't seen in years. "You’re not leaving me. You promised me."
I swallowed, but my body wouldn’t obey me. His words pierced through the fog clouding my mind. The promise. I had forgotten it, buried it, but here he was, reminding me of the life I once imagined we could have had. The life I’d had to walk away from.
"Why?" The word slipped out, barely a breath. "Why now, Alexander? After everything?"
His grip tightened. "Because I need you, damn it. I never stopped needing you."
But even as he spoke, something else crept in, an undeniable awareness. I wasn’t just fighting for life—I was fighting for a future that seemed increasingly impossible. The world around us was shifting, moving faster than I could keep up, and I had no idea who was friend or foe anymore.
Suddenly, there was a thud—heavy footsteps approaching, loud and unmistakable. The door slammed open. I barely had time to react.
“Let her go,” a cold voice demanded, sending a chill crawling down my spine. I recognized that voice.
It was Matteo.
I turned my head toward the doorway, trying to focus despite the dizziness threatening to take over. My heart hammered in my chest. “Matteo?” I whispered, disbelief coating the sound of his name.
He stepped forward, his eyes dark, his face stone-cold. “You think you’re the hero here, Alexander? You never were. None of this is your fight.” His gaze flicked down to me, the contempt in his eyes unmistakable. “It’s over for her. You can’t save her anymore.”
"You're making a mistake, Matteo," Alexander growled, shifting protectively in front of me. "This isn’t you. Whatever this is about, it’s not worth it."
Matteo smiled, but it wasn’t the smile I remembered. It was twisted, cruel. “It’s already too late for you both. You had your chance. She had her chance.”
"Why?" My voice broke through, faint but steady. "Why are you doing this, Matteo? We were family."
He laughed bitterly, his eyes burning with cold fury. "We were never family. You were always just another pawn in the game, Sophia. I’ve learned that now. But I won’t let you get in my way again. Not now. Not ever."
I could barely breathe as the words sank in. He’d always been a trusted ally, someone I believed in. But now? Now he was someone I couldn’t recognize. The betrayal was a blow to my chest, and I had to fight to keep my composure.
“You won’t get away with this,” Alexander growled, taking a step forward. But Matteo wasn’t fazed. Instead, he pulled something from his jacket, the glint of metal catching the dim light. My heart stopped in my chest.
A gun.
Matteo aimed it straight at us. My breath hitched, my body went cold. “You’re out of time, Alexander. Out of time to play the hero.” His finger twitched on the trigger. "Out of time to save her."
"Matteo—please—" I tried to speak, to beg, but the words stuck in my throat, the fear choking me.
The sound of the gun being c****d echoed loudly, so final, so terrifying. It felt like the world was closing in on me, the walls tightening, the air heavy with suffocating tension. The fear was so thick I could taste it in the back of my throat.
"Don't do it," Alexander growled, his body stiff with defiance. "You don’t have to do this."
Matteo’s lips curled into a sinister smile. "I don’t have a choice anymore. You didn’t leave me one."
Time slowed. The gun in Matteo’s hand gleamed under the harsh lighting. My mind raced, trying to make sense of it all. How had everything gotten so out of hand? How had the people I once trusted—Matteo, Alexander—become the threats I feared most?
Suddenly, there was a flash of movement.
A blur.
Before I could react, the sound of a gunshot split the air.
I gasped, my heart skipping a beat as a searing pain shot through my side. My body jerked involuntarily, and for a moment, the world spun wildly.
Alexander’s face twisted in horror. “No! Sophia!” His voice broke, panic lacing every syllable.
I couldn’t hold on anymore. The darkness was coming, pulling me under. My vision blurred, and my legs gave way beneath me. Everything went quiet.
The last thing I heard was Alexander’s frantic voice calling my name. And then, everything went silent. I couldn't move, couldn't feel, couldn’t think. But somewhere deep within me, I knew I was still alive—just barely.
And as I slipped into unconsciousness, I felt a cold hand grip my wrist. Strong. Unforgiving.
The last thing I saw before the darkness consumed me was the faint outline of Matteo’s figure, standing over me, his smirk twisted in a sickening satisfaction.
"She’s gone," Matteo whispered, just loud enough for me to hear.
And then everything went black.
The world felt far away, as if I was floating in the void. The pain in my side throbbed with every heartbeat, a reminder that I wasn’t safe, that I wasn’t out of danger yet. I wanted to scream, to move, to do something—anything—but my body wouldn’t respond. It was as if my entire being had shut down, paralyzed by the overwhelming fear that had consumed me.
I could hear Alexander’s voice, frantic and desperate, cutting through the haze. "Sophia! Stay with me! Don’t close your eyes—please, please don’t leave me."
His words were jagged, raw with emotion. My chest tightened. I wanted to reach for him, to tell him that I was here, that I was fighting to hold on. But no sound came from my lips. I couldn’t make a sound. My vision blurred, flickering in and out of focus as I struggled to keep my grip on reality.
The sound of shuffling footsteps echoed around us. I didn’t know how much time had passed. Seconds? Minutes? My sense of time was slipping away, leaving only the harsh pounding of my heart.
Then, Matteo’s voice broke through the chaos, chilling and taunting. “She’s not going to make it, Alexander. You’re too late. She was always going to be a casualty in this war."
I felt Alexander’s body stiffen, his breath sharp and ragged as he tried to hold me steady, as if the force of his will could make me fight harder. “No,” he ground out. “You’re wrong. I won’t lose her again.”
There was a pause. A tense silence that hung between us like a noose. I could hear Matteo’s laughter, low and cruel, reverberating off the walls.
"Too bad you didn’t learn the truth sooner," Matteo said, his tone filled with disdain. "You never knew what she was really capable of. What she’s been hiding from you all along."
I could feel Alexander’s hand on mine, his warmth bleeding through the coldness creeping into my limbs. His voice trembled as he spoke, full of fury and confusion. “What are you talking about, Matteo? What does she have to do with any of this?”
The pressure in the room intensified. Something was wrong—something bigger than either of us had anticipated.
“Everything,” Matteo replied coldly. “You’re both pawns in a game you didn’t even know you were playing. And it’s about to end. For both of you.”
The last words were punctuated by a distant sound, almost drowned by the beating of my heart, but unmistakable: the click of a gun being c****d.
I couldn’t even scream. My vision was darkening, the coldness creeping into every fiber of my body. But I could still hear Alexander’s voice, strained and desperate, fighting against the inevitable.
"Sophia!" he shouted. "Don’t leave me now
. Please, stay with me."
And then, a shot rang out.
