"Because..." Dante started, then stopped, trying to find words that would make sense to a four-year-old without frightening him or making him feel like his existence was something wrong or shameful. "Because some people don't understand our family. They don't understand that families can be different, can be made up of people who love each other even if they're not related in traditional ways."
"Like how you're my Papa even though you're really my uncle?" Rhysand asked, his voice still small but steadier now.
"Exactly like that," Dante said. "And sometimes, when people don't understand, they try to break up families that don't look like what they think families should look like. So we keep you secret, to keep you safe, to keep our family together."
