As we exit the Alphas office I hear him calling out to me via mind link. Even his inner voice sounds irked.
" Ahh what the hell guys she left the pine needles all over the floor." I smirk as I hear him start to try to pick them out of the carpet before giving up and calling for someone to bring him a vacuum. My humor is short lived as I watch the woman in front of me. Glaring slightly at her back, she is a witch I just know it. Despite how she smells. Under the scent of pine needles and sweat from her struggles to escape me earlier. I can smell storms, not gentle rain, but powerful wind, water, and heat. This woman is more than she appears to be.
Shaking my head vigorously, I try to shake the thoughts loose. She may very well be the enemy I don't need to be admiring her scent. My wolf of course has other ideas and is trying, even now, to prod me into sniffing her the way the alpha had done. And I was not mad about that damn it.
Even if she does turn out to be just a healer as she keeps claiming to be she is dangerous, why else would she have been on the alphas floor? Standing 6ft 2 I am taller than her by quite a bit. Taking my time to look her over now cough for the good of the pack cough gotta make sure I can pick her out of a crowd if need be. To protect the pack of course. Her hair is long braided down her back, a dark brown with hints of red. Her eyes, wide when she first appeared out of nowhere, had been a green color I would swear, but when she got angry the color shifted. Her eyes had started to turn gold with silver streaks as her temper had risen. It made me want to bait her again just to see what other changes happened. To her eyes of course.
"so we both know you are a witc-"
"healer"
"witch, you don't fool me I don't care what you smell like to the alpha. So what coven do you belong to?" Without looking behind her she throws a rock, dodging to the side slightly so it misses me I glare harder as if she can see me.
"Hey! We don't need to add another assault on the pack beta to your list of crimes witch"
"Healer. And its not my fault you cant dodge a fist."
She starts walking faster but I am able to keep up with no problem. As she walks I watch her start emptying the pine needles from her pockets and throwing them on the ground despite the fact that we have not yet entered the woods yet.
" I asked you a question. What coven are you from?"
"And I ignored your stupid question, as, One it has already been established I am a human healer. And two, even if I did belong to a coven why the hell would I tell you?"
Purposefully misinterpreting her comment I can't help but smile as we walk along getting closer to the gate for the compound.
" Last time I checked, human healers don't use herbs. They use wires, chemicals, and computers. Which means you're definitely a witch. Haha see what I did there." Suddenly she swings around to face me her eyes are turning gold again and I fight not to laugh, but am failing miserably. She begins shouting at me.
" You are being an obtuse moron on purpose! Get it through your fat head. I! Am! A! Healer!" I watch as her hands ball into fists. Oh s**t. She may try to punch me again. Her eyes light with anger as I finally loose my fight with myself and start laughing.
"This is funny to you!?!?" Marching towards me I am forced to dance out of the way as she takes a swing. This only increases my amusement.
"Little girl you got in one lucky shot while I wasn't paying attention, but I am a trained warrior and a wolf. Don't fool yourself into thinking you are a match for me."
Now I have done it, I watch as she reaches up and tightens the top of her braid. Her eyes are like fire, gold and silver with red flecks almost swirling through. No way is this chick human. As she takes a offensive stance crouching slightly, I raise one eyebrow at her. Lifting my hand I pretend to yawn but I am truly intrigued as to what this woman thinks she can do to a wolf if she is in fact human as she states.
"Consider what happened before your free shot, I won't pull punches. I don't treat women any different than I do men. I'm serious." Dispite my claims I know it's a lie, but I mean come on she isn't just any woman. If she is human I can't use my full strength, it would kill her, I am doing her this one favor because innocent until proven guilt- WHAM! I suddenly find myself out of breath and stumbing backwards, oh Sh*t she actually kicked me. ow. This shakes me out of my thoughts. As I look up she is standing there arms crossed a smug look on her face.
"What was that crap about not pulling punches, treating women the same as men? Now, lets get a few things straight here. First of all, I am a healer I have no magic so I am not a witch. Second, dont ever think you are even in the same leagueas me, wolf."
With that last statement I can feel the hostility rolling off of her in waves. Wow. What's her problem?
"Geez, hostile much? You're the one who came here and snuck in. With that much hate in that word you're clearly not a groupie. So what the hell were you doing here? And why do you hate wolves so much if you're not a witch?" Moving into a jog I get in front of her blocking her path, but by the time I get in front of her, her face is blank.
" I am done answering your questions. Get out of my way and don't make me move you."
"You literally have not answered a single one of my questions!" But I am out of time. We have reached the gate to the compound and she reaches out shoving me out of the way. I could have stopped her, but there was no point now I did as my alpha had asked, and had escorted her to the gate. As I watched her walk out of the gate I am more confused than ever. Suddenly I hear the alpha in my head.
"Return to my office Drex we need to discuss security in light of this new situation." I nod even though he cannot see me the intent behind the gesture will come through our mind link. Making my way back to the main house I look around at our home. Most of pack land is woods so that we are free to run and hunt to our hearts content while in iur wolf forms. But here in this clearning that we have made is modern homes dotted here and there along with a sizable estate style house. this is the compound it houses most of the unmated pack members and a few higher level members of the pack such as our alpha Braxton, myself and his other beta Elisia. I love our home it's like one big family.
I enter through the kitchen, uggggg, I can still smell pine needles and storms down here. Letting out a low growl in irritation, I can see I have frightened a few workers, I stop growling immediately and look around.
"Sorry yall, I'm not angry with anyone here. don't tell cook but I'm gonna just grab one of these biscuits, I'm starving." That sets a few of them laughing knowing cooks temper about people eating what she has planned for supper before its served. I wink at one of the girls as I grab a biscuit and head upstairs to the Alphas office.
"Took your sweet time getting here, stopped by the kitchen I see too. I assume that food in your hand is an offering to your alpha for being so amazing." Braxton is staring at me hand out. Like I would give up my spoils even to my best friend.
" Ya right, you know what cook would do to me if she knew I took this? Not a chance my man, my risk my reward." taking a bite of biscuit right in front of him. I watch as he narrows his eyes at me.
"Maybe I should just call cook up here then."
Stuffing the rest of the biscuit in my mouth I try to chew and swallow quickly but end up choking spraying some crums on the carpet in front of me.
"Gosh dang it man! I JUST vacuumed!" he looks ready to jump over his desk and I start laughing quietly once I choke down the rest of the biscuit. Then he just sighs muttering.
"First pine needles, now crumbs. speaking of pine needles, did you handle your groupie?" He is smiling when I look up but I growl softly.
" She is not my groupie. She is a witch I know it!"
"A witch, with no magic? not likely." He leans back in his chair. " But I will admit she poses a pretty big problem. She did obviously have access to magic. So even if she herself is no witch she may still be working for some, or in league with a coven in the area."
Taking a seat in a chair across from him on the other side of his desk I nod.
"Yes it would be just like a witch to start employing humans to do their dirty work. If found wandering pack lands, we would simply assume a lost hiker or something. Especially if they don't smell like a witch."
"Precisely, even carrying herbs like the one today. So many people are moving more towards natural remedies again, how do we sort out the lies?" Braxton takes a deep breath and I just know I'm not going to like what comes next.
" Perhapes we should consider, hiring-"
"Don't say it!"
"A witch of our own."
A growl rips through me and I stand.
"No! None of them can be trusted! they are pure evil, only out for themselves, and to hurt defenseless wolves!" My body is starting to shake, and I can feel my wolf pacing my mind ready to spring forward. Braxton stands and watches me.
"Calm yourself my friend. it was only a thought."
"Well you can take your thought and shove it where the sun don't shine! You know better than all of us what those soulless things are capable of. Witches are pure evil, down to the last one!" Rolling my shoulders I try to calm down, but my wolf wants to come forward so bad to sniff out and destroy the threat of witches once and for all, so that we can finally settle down. My wolf has always been vocal in his way about what he wants, he is a warrior through and through but me and my wolf both want a family, a wife and some pups to come home to.
"- not even listening to me are you?"
Pretending to gasp I place my hand to my heart.
" I take offense to such an unfounded accusation. I heard everything you just said."
He looks at me skeptically.
"Oh ya? What did I say then?"
" That's easy. You said "blah blah blah Drex is the greatest and deserves a promotion", see I heard every word." I dodge his incoming brass paperweight grabbing it before it flys by completely laughing slightly. " Did I get it wrong?"
With a sigh he sits down behind his desk.
" First of all you are a beta there is no higher position to put you in, unless you're going to tell me you're gunning for the alpha spot."
" Not freaking likely."
"Hahaha didn't think so. Second not all witches are bad and we both know it. There are healers that do great good. We could ask one of them."
Leaning against the wall with one shoulder I cross my arms across my chest.
" The healers are just that, they heal and nothing else. They are not warriors, they cannot fight or do offensive magic and we need a fighter not a wall flower."
"Drex, even just having a healer on our side would up our chances for survival if nothing else, and they could teach us what to guard against maybe five us inside information."
Standing back up fully I throw my hands into the air.
" Fine. Fine! Where are we supposed to find a healer that's not so tainted they would rather poison one of us than heal us hmm?" Suddenly I know what he is going to say and I groan.
"Yep, you know what's coming. Go get that girl even if she can't help us she may know someone who can."
"OH for the love of the goddess I JUST dropped her at the edge of the compound. She is probably half way off pack lands by now, if she didn't double back to try and sneak back in."
" Better run real fast then my friend." As he laughs I finally allow my wolf to take over rolling my eyes and shaking out my fur once my shift is complete. Walking up to Braxton I bow slightly and nudge him up from the chair. I wait as he opens the door to his office before running out and down the stairs past the staff someone opens a door to the outside for me I nod as I run passed. It feels amazing to be outside running as my wolf. Shaking my head I stop for a moment smelling the faint scent of storms, shaking my head once more I take off again to find that woman and bring her back, willing or not, to hear out my alpha.
