CHAPTER THIRTEEN
~DAPHNE~
I scoffed as I stared at the text. So Laken finally swallowed his pride and decided to text me first? I wonder what he wanted to talk about.
“Hey, Daphne,” Phoebe stood in front of my table, a warm smile on her face.”Tell me, do you swim? I heard the academy has a magnificent pool,”
I laid back in my seat.”Not exactly, but I’d like to learn. Can you teach me?”
“Of course, let’s meet by the pool after class. What about you, Kennedy,”
“I’ll pass,” she sighed. “I still feel hungover from last night and I don’t know why. Perhaps, I need to rest more,”
“Yeah, you should. I’ll see you guys later,” Phoebe waved us off and left the class.
I got another notification on my phone and checked. It was from Laken.
“Yeah, I know. I swallowed my pride,”
I chuckled as I read the text.
“Your presence is starting to irritate me and I don’t like it,” I heard a voice behind me. I already knew that voice—it belonged to the bothersome twins.
I turned around to face them.
“I’m literally just existing,” I exhaled, wondering what their problem is with me now.
“I saw you during breakfast having a meal with my man,” Yolanda blurted out, her eyes laced with venom. She let out a small scary laugh.
“It’s obvious that you don’t know me. You dare disobey me and try to talk to my man,”
“If you watched closely, you’d have seen Laken come to meet me while I was on my own. What was I supposed to do?”
“Why didn’t you turn the other way?” Yasmine pointed in my face.
I scoffed at that statement. Look who’s talking? She’s doing worse behind her sister’s back but I dare not say anything.
“Laken told me he is very single,” I blurted out before I could stop myself. I wonder where my confidence came from.
Yolanda grabbed me by the collar violently, an evil and scary look in her eyes. “You b***h! How dare a poor scholarship girl like you even breathe the same air that I do? You are beneath me b***h!”
“Let me go!” I struggled to free myself from her tight embrace. Her nails were digging into my flesh as she held me.
“Please!” Kennedy walked up to Yolanda, rubbing her palms profusely as she begged. “Daphne is simply new and doesn’t know how things work. Please spare her! I beg you!”
Yolanda hesitated for a moment before letting go of me. “You have been marked! Watch your back, scholarship girl,”
She flipped her hair in my face and walked out of the classroom.
“What the hell!” I muttered under my breath.
“Daphne! What are you doing?” Kennedy held my shoulder as her eyes flickered in worry. “You have been marked. Do you know what that means?”
“What?”
“It means they will bully you without reason, just because they enjoy it. That’s really bad!”
I wonder why she looked so agitated. What’s the worst they can do?
“Let’s say that happens, I’ll just report to the authorities,”
“Nothing will be done, Daphne. I’ve been here longer than you so listen to what I say. You need to ensure you stay out of their way.
I sighed, running my hands through my hair. “I promise you that they are the ones who always come to me every time. Anyway, I have to meet up with Laken. I’ll see you later,”
I gave her a pat on the shoulder and left the classroom. I wanted to quickly meet up with Laken before heading to my private class with Professor Fox and Phoebe. I was about to call and ask for his location when one of the students walked up to me. I recognized him as one of my classmates.
“Hi. Laken said you should meet him in the storage room. His phone died so he can’t contact you,”
“Oh! Okay, thank you,” I nodded. That was surely an odd place to meet up. Anyway, I walked towards the fields, at the back of the school, and went all the way to the dumpster site. The storage room was just in front of it. The door was open and I walked in.
Laken was checking out something in the messed-up store room. He looked up at me as I walked in.
“What an interesting meet-up point,” my eyes darted around. The storage room was filled with different types of old carton boxes, a bunch of tools, and wires.
Laken was about to reply when the door suddenly shut behind me. I turned around and tried to open the door but it was locked.
“That’s what you get for trying to mess with me, b***h!” I heard Yolanda’s voice.
My eyes widened in horror and I banged on the door. “Please open up! Open the door! I’m claustrophobic!"
“What nonsense is this! Open up the door!” Laken’s thunderous voice echoed in the storage room but there was no response.
“Yolanda! Yolanda!” Laken hit the door frantically but there was no response. It was then that it dawned on me that we were in trouble.
