Gavin POV
It was my first day after officially becoming Alpha of the Red Lily Acres pack. It had been just over a month since my father gave me the assignment to investigate the deaths of the Noble Families of this pack and take over leadership. Father had refused to jet me use the jet to get here, so the drive here over the last few days had been tiresome and I really just wanted to get this day over with.
I knew he did it intentionally to try and get me to interact with others inside the province. But I would remain stubborn. I wasn’t going to allow him to manipulate me into being able to take the crown. I wanted to keep myself as the worst candidate for the role so he’d have to give it to one of my brothers.
But to keep up appearances, despite my actual age, I had to attend the only all-supernatural high school in the area. Though, in reality, I had stopped aging long ago and now had over a millennium to my name. Including countless false identities over the generations. The thought of school was less than appealing, but I’d been through worse. Currently, my Beta, Jim, was at my side as we walked the halls before first period began. He was giving me a quick tour of the place. I tried to pay attention as he described each wing and hall, but my mind was elsewhere.
At least classes would be easy and I would never have to legitimately pay attention. I could sleep through them all and still pass. But there was another reason for attending, a far more intriguing affair. It gave me better access to the Rogue Human. She had been transferred here to lessen the risk of exposure of supernatural kind to humans. As the only human in the school, she was surrounded by supernatural creatures and I intended to observe how she interacted with everyone.
The school consisted of mainly the Red Lily Acres pack, but there were some shifters and vampires in the mix, as well as some hybrids, faeries, trolls, and goblins. All in human form, of course. But none would harm her, because thanks to my father’s tolerance order, the price was more costly and severe than any were willing to pay. It was the only place we could keep her until I tamed her. I would not allow myself to fail.
Before making the trip to the province, I had made it a point to study her history and behavior. She had 5 in school suspensions, countless detentions, extra homework and assignments, and even transferred schools due to her rebellious behavior. But that was only since entering high school.
Before that, she was an isolated child, followed the rules and only kept a small circle of friends, although bullies seemed to favor her ad their target. So no school would expel her or serve external suspension, because her offenses wouldn’t warrant it. Especially since most were in self defense or defense of another student.
To say I wasn’t impressed with her would be a lie. Countless attempts at her life, both indirect and direct, had been made and she thwarted all of them, all while remaining completely oblivious which was astonishing. Even with a gun poised at her chest under the guise of a school shooting, this woman did not back down. Even with 3 bullets in her shoulder and gut, she fought back and disarmed and dispatched the assailant.
No human I had ever seen, known, or heard of could ever so blatantly disregard the auras of supernatural kind. It was one of the things that helped keep our existence secret from humans. Even though we lived among humans without them knowing of our very existence, they always seemed able to sense we were different. That we were dangerous.
All thanks to our auras. But, in fact, with her, it seemed quite the opposite. As if it fueled her responses. I wanted to meet her for myself and witness her in action. See how the aura of a Royal impacted her. The pack was under strict orders not to interfere in any of my dealings with her for this very reason.
The other supernatural kind of the school preferred to stay out of pack affairs, but had agreed to distance themselves. I had intentionally had my brigade begin testing her limits though, having sent them ahead of my arrival to assess the situation. So far, her reputation held true. They continued to taunt her, and she continued to impress.
Jim turned me down yet another hall, and I vaguely caught him pointing out the cafeteria and front office. But I still couldn’t focus as my eyes searched the halls for the rebellious little human. Though I had no idea what she looked like aside from descriptions. No one had provided me a picture, which irked me.
Aside from the intel of the Rogue Human, I had no leads into the murders of the Royal families yet. Just a bunch of questions. No one knew where they contracted the illness and their bodies held no traces of whatever plague had overcome and killed them. It was like they all just suddenly keeled over and kicked the bucket.
There was no evidence of external trauma or internal bleeding caused by any known conditions or diseases, nor remaining antibodies or viral bacterium. No toxins, blood clots, or any naturally occurring phenomenon. Nothing. They were all perfectly healthy, but experienced the same onslaught if symptoms which lead to their internal systems quite literally erupting under their skin. Now, all of them were dead.
Though the thoughts troubled me, I had to focus on the task at hand. I needed to learn the layout of the school to better serve my cover. But over half the school was part of the pack and word of my arrival had been quick to spread. I’m sure any of them would be eager to guide me if I asked. My Betas, Gammas, and Deltas, had made quick work to establish me.
Without acting leadership, the pack had gotten a bit out of control in the short time it took us to step in. When I sent my brigade in, they had the hard task of restoring balance in the hierarchy before I arrived. They did surprisingly well, exceeding even my own expectations. So well, in fact, that it was such a smooth transition that there was little to no collateral damage or rebuttal. Usually when leadership falls in a pack, the pack falls into disarray as members battle to try and claim a ranked role. But that had been the least of this pack’s concern.
Turns out, the biggest issue hadn’t been the pack. But rather, the Rogue Human. It’s why I wanted to see her. Meet her. She kept initiating fights, mostly verbal unless aggravated further, challenging anyone, even my higher ranked wolves. Somehow she managed to get one of my Deltas-Orio-to submit to her. Only heaven knows how she managed that. Orio was known for his short temper and fierce combat skills, but she took him down with a few punches and a head slam to the face.
She always talked back, interrupting pack member brawls, and even if an Omega or other lower ranking wolf was being forced into submission for disobedience or disrespect, she interfered. She thought we were bullying and demanded we stop the actions or else she would. If they struck her, she struck back harder.
Not even the other species of supernatural kind could get her to submit. As a consequence, most chose to avoid her. But there were also the foolhardy individuals who intentionally taunted her, like I had asked my brigade to do. Yet, she would not stand down, even to teachers who were full grown lycans or vampires exerting their aura.
It was amusing really. But this Rogue Human was about to learn quickly that I would not tolerate her behavior much longer. I would make her fall in line.
To say I was growing impatient and was rather eager to meet her, was an understatement. Curiosity drew me to her. I wanted to see this girl that seemingly was not affected or swayed by anything. I wanted to know what made her tick. I shook my head of my thoughts as I forced myself to focus once more on the present.
“…and this is B wing, the library is over there just past those set of lockers,” My Beta was telling me as we walked down the hall. The lycan students acknowledged my presence and bowed their heads respectfully as I passed. While the other supernatural kind students stared curiously or lowered their eyes.
I nodded and took note as Jim handed me my class schedule. I had intentionally made sure all my classes were shared with the Rogue Human. To grant more access to her for my duration here.
Before Jim opened his mouth to say more, a loud, angry female voice echoed across the halls. “Ah not again…” Jim groaned, and stopped us in our tracks. Immediately I caught sight of the only human in the school. The Rogue Human, confronting one of my Deltas-Preston. “Is that…?” My question trailed off and Jim nodded his head in amusement. “Watch,” he replied simply, leaning against the wall. So I did.
I watched as the Rogue Human lashed out and came virtually nose to nose with Preston, while shoving a warning finger in his face. Despite her rebellion, the Rogue Human was quite the attractive young woman. Even though Preston's muscular blond form seemed to dwarf her at this distance, I could still make out her fine features. She was short, but had voluptuous hips and breasts with a slim figure.
She had light brown hair that hung down to her waist and grey eyes that seemed to swirl with blue and green. I shook my head. Why was I so enraptured by her appearance? I would take none other than my mate. I hadn’t even touched a woman my entire existence, though I courted a couple all for show. But it never went further than a date. My kisses and my body were reserved only for my mate, if ever I was to find her.
Preston’s lips curved up in an amused smirk, and in an instant I watched as his wolf came forward and he shoved her against the lockers. The next thing I knew, he was kissing her. The action, surprisingly, ignited a fury in me I didn’t understand, and my typically silent wolf growled in my head, trying to come forward.
I pushed my wolf back and forced myself to continue watching with indifference, but my body was shaking. I had the urge to attack Preston, get him off her. But I suppressed it. A mere Human shouldn’t ignite this type of protectiveness. It had to be my new Alpha status which gave me a natural need to protect lesser ranking beings-including humans.
Preston was allowing his primitive, lustful impulses to take over again, just like at the palace, as he continued to assault her. Not that I could blame him with this one. She was gorgeous and he just could not resist the pull of a gorgeous woman.
But what happened next caught me off guard and had me gaping. After stiffening and dropping her bag from her shoulder, she threw him off of her and punched him, reversing the tables easily. In a fit of blind rage, she continued to pummel him until he was submitting to her and sagged to the floor, clutching a broken nose. It was like his wolf refused to give him strength to fight, and even with his added strength, she was just too overpowering.
Just then some teachers began rushing toward them but I cast out my aura and raised a hand, shaking my head. I didn’t want them to interfere, even to address Preston until the Rogue Human was gone.
I watched as the girl grabbed her bag and crouched next to him. She said something lowly to him, obviously some kind of threat or warning, then stood and walked away. My gaze followed her. I was curious to see that she joined a vampire boy and one of my twin Gammas. I didn’t know one of my brigade had befriended her. I narrowed my eyes. Why wasn’t this reported to me? Just then the school bell rang, signaling breakfast ended and the students had 5 minutes to get to class.
As I watched her retreating form my eyes travelled down the length of her body, lingering on the sway of her hips.
‘Those hips…’
I jumped as my wolf spoke. He never came out really, but he did enjoy manipulating my thoughts every so often. And in this instance, he was making me picture running my hands down those hips while I-
“Cat got your tongue Gavin? Or should I say, Trish got your tongue?” Jim clapped me on the back then, laughing. He was the only member of this pack who dared treat me as a friend and not a superior. I shoved the impure thoughts that threatened to impair my reasoning away.
A flush of embarrassment was on the verge of reddening my cheeks, but I shoved it down and glared at my Beta. I wasn’t about to lose my composure in front of my new pack, let alone other supernatural subjects. I was a Prince and an Alpha. “I’m the Alpha, and a Royal Prince. Why would a human affect me? She just better learn her place, and quickly,” I growled through clenched teeth. Though, deep inside, I couldn’t even believe my own words.
Jim laughed again. “Good luck with that, man. She’ll even take you on, if you challenge her. She’s not popular because of looks alone you know, though she is hot.” For some reason that comment made my wolf growl for the second time in less than 15, minutes and for a brief moment rage consumed me. Why was I getting so angry over this Human!?
Jim failed to notice my brief mood shift, and continued, “That girl, though sweet, when challenged at all, has a tongue like a razor and a bite just as vicious. She doesn’t open her friend circle much, so good luck ‘putting her in her place.’” He gave air quotes on the last part. Then with that, he walked away, laughing.
I stood contemplating for a moment, eyes narrowed in the direction Trisha had gone. Who did this human think she was!? I was Royalty and she didn’t even acknowledge I was in the same vicinity, let alone watching her! But most of all, why did this anger me?
I was the most level headed of all my family. How did she so easily get under my skin? She just defeated a high rank warrior in a fistfight, despite his wolf obviously rising to the surface in every way, except shifting.
I found my interest in her growing. This was not a normal human at all, and although I had known that prior to meeting her, the full brunt of it was only just beginning to register to me. A part of me still wondered if she was more than human.
‘She’s not. You would’ve been able to sense it or smell it. I like her.’
I rolled my eyes at my wolf. I had lived a millennium with his virtual silence, why was he surfacing now and becoming so talkative? I took a deep breath and let it out. Other than my curiosity to learn more about her, I didn’t know what to think. Should I be wary of her? Intrigued? Hostile? I scoffed. No human would get the better of me. I shook my head and cleared it as the bell rang again signaling classes were starting.
I wasn’t sure what the future held, but I knew one thing: I was going to have fun taming this human. I turned on my heel and headed to my first period, smirking as a plan formed in my mind.
