chapter 5 ( terms that bind)

The contract sat between them; black, thick, precise and unforgiving like a wall neither of them were willing to climb over yet both of them knew for a surety that they would have to but once they did, there would be no going back. Jessica didn’t reach for it immediately instead, she watched him, studied his expression and body movements and even more not the suit on his body, not the wealth he had amassed, not the power that seemed to settle around him like a second skin as Adrian Vale was not what she expected. He was very different; He wasn’t fragile and he wasn’t distant in the way dying people were supposed to be but he was… contained like everything about him was being held together by an unseen force. “Most people would have opened it by now,” he said. His voice cut through the silence, very low and observant. Jessica didn’t look down. “I’m not most people, I expect you to have known that by now.” She replied and immediately there was a faint shift in his expression showing interest and intrigue. “So, I’ve noticed.” He said as she leaned back slightly, crossing one leg over the other not defensive, not relaxed. Just… deliberately bearing the pains that followed his intention. It’s evident that you’re watching me,” No, she said. “I’m only evaluating you. For what? “For the role you volunteered for.” Jessica tilted her head slightly meeting his gaze. “Do not get things twisted I didn’t volunteer,” she said. “I responded, Same thing. “No,” she replied calmly. “One implies willingness. The other implies necessity.” OH! Necessity… interesting Adrian’s gaze sharpened towards her. “Which one is it for you?” Jessica held his eyes as she didn’t hesitate to spill. “I am a Necessity.” Silence stretched between them but it wasn’t empty it was… charged making Adrian to lean forward slightly, the movement was controlled but she noticed the strain behind though it wasn’t obvious but it was visible there. “And if the necessity disappears?” he asked. “It won’t. “You seem so certain?” Her voice didn’t waver in response “Yes.” There was a brief silence “Good,” Adrian said quietly, something about that word felt heavier than it should have been. Finally, Jessica reached for the contract as her fingers brushed through the pages of the paper slowly and carefully, then stood stilled almost impulsively “Before I sign anything,” she said, “I need clarity.” Adrian didn’t respond immediately, he simply watched her, waiting to hear the product of the thoughts in her head that led to that impulsive stop. “The contract states no emotional obligations,” she continued. “No intimacy requirements.” “Yes.” “Does that apply both ways? There was a flicker Adrian’s facial expression, it was small but very real then Adrian leaned back slightly. “How does that concern you? “It is relevant.” “How so?” Jessica met his gaze steadily and responded. “Because I won’t be owned.” There was a moment of Silence like the one given to great fellows who had passed on to the next world. Adrian was shocked because that was not something people said to him openly to his face even if it was to be said it would be behind him and not be in that manner. “You won’t be,” Adrian replied. “Then say it clearly.” This time there was a longer pause of disgust from Adrian’s expression “You will not be required to give anything beyond the terms of the contract,” he said finally. His voice was steady and certain as Jessica studied him for a moment longer to be sure of his words. “And you?” The question landed differently this time, not bold, not careless but Intentional. This time Adrian’s eyes darkened slightly. “I don’t and won’t be needing anything from you,” he said as there was no hesitation in it, no ego, no performance, just the simple truth. Jessica’s gaze lingered on him longer than necessary and for a brief second the tension shifted not sharp, not defensive but something quieter and more dangerous. Then she looked back down at the contract. “Duration,” she said. “Until my death.” The words came easily, in fact too easily. Jessica’s fingers tightened slightly against the pen pressed on the paper. You say that like it doesn’t matter. “It doesn’t change anything. “It changes everything she said Their eyes met again this time there was something deeper in it… like a connection “You’re afraid,” Adrian said. Yes. She didn’t deny it, her honesty surprised him Again. “But not enough to walk away,” he added. “No. “Why?” he asked. That question shouldn’t have mattered but it did as Jessica inhaled slowly “Because some things are more important than fear.” The words were quiet but they carried weight and for a moment Adrian saw something far from desperation and greed but he saw an unfeigned strength which looked like something unbreakable, something raw, something he hadn’t expected. Before he could respond a sound cut through the moment, a soft vibration Adrian’s phone which made his gaze shifted briefly just for a second but Jessica noticed the screen lit up due to a message. Just a glimpse but enough to capture it. “DOSAGE ADJUSTED… HE WOULDN’T NOTICE. Jessica’s breath caught as it was gone as quickly as it appeared. Adrian turned the phone face down immediately, too quickly, deliberately and then silence followed this time different now as he looked back at her. “If you have questions,” he said, his voice returning to its controlled edge, Jessica wasn’t looking at him anymore, she was looking at the phone then back at him slowly and carefully. “Who adjusted your medication?” she asked. The question landed like a shift in the room’s attention. Adrian’s expression didn’t change but something in the air did. “Why do you ask?” Jessica leaned forward slightly now mirroring his earlier movement, she wasn’t stepping back anymore. “Because you didn’t react to that message like someone who trusts it,” she said. “You’re observant,” Adrian said again. “You’re being managed,” she replied. That hit something and made Adrian’s jaw tightened slightly in anger. “Careful,” he said quietly. “About what?” she asked. “Your assumptions.” Jessica held his gaze unshaken towards him “That wasn’t an assumption.” Another pause, longer this time and for a brief moment too brief as something real slipped through… Maybe doubt, Then-It was gone. “Sign the contract,” Adrian said not harsh, not cold but final. Jessica didn’t move immediately because now—This wasn’t just about money or survival, it was about something else, something hidden, something he wasn’t saying, something someone didn’t want him to know. Her fingers tightened around the pen. “This doesn’t make me yours,” she said quietly. Adrian’s gaze didn’t waver “No,” he replied. “It doesn’t. “It just makes you necessary.” The words settled between them which made something about them feel different, not ownership, not control but connection which was going to be dangerously unplanned. Jessica signed as the ink pressed into the paper like a point of no return and in that moment, she didn’t just agree to a marriage, she automatically stepped into a secret hidden behind thick layers of brutal conspiracy and betrayal, one that might cost more than she was being paid to risk, one that was far above her pay check as Adrian watched her, he didn’t realize one thing which was that she had already seen too much to be kept silent or pushed into a corner like some business excellence award one of the many he had
