Dad replied, “They do read a lot of Beta reports and they know her. It’s probably an Alpha thing. As for Drake he is a Beta. He taught her how to write reports. Maybe he knows what’s not there. Or the intent behind the words written.”
Kingsley went over the computer and pulled up a report. She told Uncle Gunner, “Put this one up.” I asked, “Why?” She answered, “Because it will explain better than I can. Drunk Melanie wrote this one.” I asked, “Why would you give her drunk alter ego that name?” She snorted, “I had nothing to do with it. It was already a thing when I met her.”
Uncle Gunner displayed the report. I started to read through it and barely suppressed a laugh. I asked, “This is what Drunk Melanie is like?” She replied, “It’s funnier in person. Trust me.” I kept reading. She went on a full rant about how Alpha Peter made her believe all Alpha’s were good, but they weren’t. She hadn’t run into a good Alpha since she left other than the one’s she was training.
My eyes teared up reading her write how much she wanted him to love her again. He hung his head and wiped his eyes. She practically wrote him a whole ass report begging for his love and being angry she couldn't get it back no matter how she helped.
Aunt Haley sighed, “This is after she saved them at the cabin. Isn’t it?” Kingsley answered, “It was a month after, yes.” Alpha Peter whispered, “You were right, Haley. You said it would be obvious. That she wanted us to know.” She deliberately stated she wanted him to know at the end and she was furious he never reached out. She’d even wanted a mean letter but she didn’t get one.
Because he’d never written her a letter and the people who did had no idea she’d saved him. I linked Uncle Gunner, “Find the letters. I think they are paramount to understanding her.” He replied, “She burned them.”
I shot him a look before answering, “She burnt the physical copies. Tell me you wouldn’t have a backup. She emulates her online presence after you. Which means there are copies and you can find them on this system because they would be where you’d put them.” He inclined his head and I knew he’d look.
Drake whispered brokenly, “Melanie Jane.” He touched the screen and hung his head crying. Alpha Peter hugged him while Uncle Eric looked to be in physical pain reading the report. Aunt Haley said, “Well, we can fix this.” Everyone turned to her while Kingsley smiled at her.
Uncle Eric said, “I don’t know that…” Aunt Haley cut him off, “You see what I do there. It’s a clear f*****g goddamn plea to see Alpha’s like Peter still exist. Well, we know a f*****g s**t ton of them. She didn’t though other than what she heard because she never met them. Then Selene’s such a f*****g b***h having the girl that desperately needs to see some semblance of good people being surrounded by men who want the power they sense within her.”
She shook her head, “She probably thought she saw the extent of that in Red Run and traveling. Then she’s hit in the face of that being how good packs respond to her. The s**t the bad ones did was far exceeding what happened to her in a good pack. She wants Peter to love her again. He never stopped.”
Alpha Peter asked, “And how do I tell her that?” Aunt Haley answered, “She already knows. The guilt is what stops her from running to you. Guilt and anger she doesn’t know where to put. The anger is clearly a f*****g problem.” She did light up like a glow stick over a graze Alexander took.
I surmised, “You think something minor will happen and she’ll lose her shit.” Kingsley snorted, “You all need her Xander’s guard on his ass twenty-four seven then. He is who she would lose it over.” Aunt Haley made a face, “Yes and no.” I asked, “Who?” She answered, “It’s not a short list and that’s the f*****g problem. It’s our whole ass family. It’s everyone in the Resistance.” Oh f**k.
She nodded to the reports, “You see the extremes she went to making sure they were never in danger. I bet if I read reports she went on WITH them, she had them leave. She did with Cassie. She got them out and took on the danger. She’s decided she’s their leader and put her Beta blood aside, but she’s still a wolf. She’s decided she’s their Alpha, not of a pack of the Resistance.” Alpha Peter looked terrified and horrified at the same time. Uncle Eric actually flinched.
Aunt Haley continued, “The visceral reaction she will have is Sam, Drake, or Tristan being hurt is not one we want to see. To be honest, Jason needs to be careful too. Someone pull the report from Missouri when he was shot at.” Kingsley worked on that while Uncle Gunner pulled up the feeds from the cameras.
Mom pointed, “There. She realizes she’s too far away and screams for him. She jumped over that banister when she could’ve broken both her legs, but she doesn’t care. She ran to him with little regard for her life. Her whole chest restricts when she knows he’s ok.” I saw Finn Frost try to put a tracker on her and miss by nanoseconds.
Drake said, “It’s going to be our whole family too.” Uncle Gunner muttered, “Oh fuck.” My dad snorted, “What?” Kingsley gasped. Uncle Gunner said, “I found a letter.” Alpha Peter admitted, “I can’t read something awful from me.” Aunt Haley said, “It’s not from you. It’s from Melinda.” Drake and Alpha Peter whirled. I leaned over to read it and took a step back.
Kingsley put a hand on me. She whispered, “H.” I told her, “I’m sure you’ve read in the file Melanie has one me I’m good at putting myself into someone’s shoes. It’s how I’m so goddamn good at figuring people out. It’s why I waited HOURS when she blew those people apart and nearly had her, which she admitted. If I had just stayed…”
She cut me off, “She’d have done everything to get away from you because she believed you’d stop her from protecting her Xander if you knew who she really was.” I sighed, “Well, I know that Melinda telling Melanie she wished she was dead made her want to die. It probably chipped at her soul.”
Drake was pulling on his hair. Aunt Haley scoffed, “I see why she believed it. Spells aside, it’s Melinda’s handwriting.” Drake whispered, “I thought she….” He trailed off. He cried, “What have they done to my pup? They didn’t even realize what they did.” Alpha Peter agreed, “They did not.”
Uncle Eric explained, “To do this to a Beta pup. These letters will play into why she can’t let them get hurt. She blamed herself and other people blamed her.” Alpha Peter whispered, “She thinks I blamed her. They used me and took on the weight of the world.” Kingsley hummed, “She says she made the world her dance floor.”
Drake hit his knees. I surmised, “I’m guessing that’s something you told her to do?” Alpha Peter answered, “Yes, they all did.” Aunt Haley said, “I know this is jarring, but we knew it was bad. I speculated this was done. I didn’t guess they went as far as f*****g MELINDA, which means MaryBeth too. I thought they’d leave it at her paternal grandparents.”
I asked, “Has she even seen her mom’s parents?” Drake winced, “No, but Haley told them it was likely their letters were bad.” Aunt Haley nodded, “Yes, they would be because they didn’t want her to look into Stephanie’s connection. They would’ve severed that relationship harshly and brutally. I doubt they communicated with her often.”
I rubbed my temples, “You think Melanie felt these letters continued their relationship. Whereas silence was a severing.” She nodded, “Exactly.” Alpha Peter snorted, “So, she thinks we what?” I answered, “She felt the possibility of forgiveness because you all wrote her letters. Highly intelligent people see things that way. She doesn't see it like you trying to hurt her. She sees it, probably as toxic, but as an opening. That if you wrote her off and would never care again you’d shut her out.”
Alpha Peter agreed, “That is toxic. She shouldn’t have kept these.” Aunt Haley said, “They were her pieces of you and she held onto them. She probably re-read them a lot.” I admitted, “I know she did. When Cayden went to talk to her she’d have them with her.” Drake looked broken.
Aunt Haley knelt down and got on his level. She said, “This gives us more than we knew. I speculated but what I’m looking at gives me more hope than I already had. She’s already healing because she knows it was all a lie. Her now displaced anger will be something to deal with, but she’s around amazing f*****g Alpha’s. She’s with my son.” Kingsley added, “Which is really good.” I agreed, “It is.”
I grabbed her hand and led her out of the room leaving them to their discussion. She told me, "I don't think that conversation was over." I agreed, "It's not, but they will help Melanie. I trust them to do so. My Aunt is the best in her field. I know you're overwhelmed and I was too. Putting myself in her mindset is heartbreaking." She admitted, "It was heartbreaking to see. More so now knowing the truth now."
I changed the subject, “How was work?” She answered, “Good. I’ll be doing a twofer tomorrow.” I asked, “What on Aesir’s earth does that mean?” She winked, “I’m having Stella come in to help me with an extraction.”
I said, “Then Linc, me, and Maddox will have your six.” With her guard. She chuckled, “That’s fine. Just say back.” I replied, “I always will unless you’re hurt. Then I will step in and rip everyone to pieces.” She rolled her eyes then wiggled her eyebrow, “Are you going to get all hot and bothered watching me fight?”
I groaned, “It’s going to be a fight?” She grinned, “Gosh I hope so. My heart is now set on seeing your response to me kicking ass.” I called, “Lithan.” He faded in. I ordered, “Get your unit together.” He nodded and got on his phone. I called Maddox. He answered, “f**k man. Come on!” I told him, “Get to me. Bring Luca, Robyn, and Linc.” He grunted, “c**k blocking mother fucker.” I scoffed and hung up.
I opened a portal to Kingsley’s office and unlocked the computer for her. I said, “Feel free to run it through for us.” She grinned, “I’d love to. This is fun. Normally only Stella or the people on the mission see the end result. Stella’s the only one that sees me do it in person though. Well, Melanie and I have done this too. Never a group.” I hugged her knowing that I was going to do everything in my power to protect her on this mission.
H is having SO MUCH FUN linking people he knows are in the pack now that he's joined. Do you think he'll take his guard on the next mission? Because.....they made it too easy. We can't have that now can we? I do love how he always pulls Haley in and he's resepecting his Uncle (eric) bringing him in when he knows he'd want to be there for his mate. It's fun to see how getting your mate changes perspective. How long do you think Chance will live if he's still alive? H is coming in hot. Do you think he'll punch Ember? Do we get see Freya shooting bolts and Thor ripping throats? Who is H going to hurt in her family? Or will he at all? These are all the pressing questions.
*Whispers someone should worry about the hellion Cambridge triplets*
My heart broke for T, Drake, and Peter. Even Eric was devstaed seeing the ramifcations of what the Ring and Black Path did to Melanie and all they did was read reports. K has some questions about that reports and the answers upset her. (it involves why they would have a spot for injuries prior to the mission) Now we get to see stella and K in action! Do you think it will get H's blood going because you KNOW Kayda will be team start a fight. ;)
