Tragedy

A sharp gasp tore through Sienna Sterling's throat as she jolted awake, her body wracked with excruciating pain. "Who are you? Why are you doing this? Leave me alone!" Her voice rang out into the oppressive darkness, her words swallowed instantly by the void. No response came... only a thick, suffocating silence. Her breathing came in ragged, desperate bursts. She tugged at her arms, but harsh resistance bit deep into her wrists. Rope. The rough fibers scraped against raw skin as she twisted. Her legs, too, were bound tightly, rendering her completely vulnerable. The icy air against her bare skin sent violent shivers through her trembling frame. Panic clawed at her chest. The heavy scent of blood hung in the air—metallic and sickening. A dull, throbbing pain radiated from every inch of her body, as if she had been trampled beneath something brutal. She swallowed hard, tasting the coppery tang on her tongue. Her mind spun, desperately grasping for clarity. What happened? How did I get here? As the daughter of one of the wealthiest families in the city, she had never harmed anyone. She was never arrogant or disrespectful. Then, the brutal truth hit her like a crashing wave. She had left the office early that day to meet her sister at a party. As she stepped out of the elevator into the dimly lit underground parking lot, a massive shadow had loomed behind her. Before she could react, a chemical-soaked cloth was slammed against her face. She had struggled wildly, her heart pounding in terror, but within moments, cold darkness consumed her. A sob bubbled up in her throat, but she forced it down. Now was not the time to break. She had to think. She had to get out. Her fingers twitched against the rough bindings, searching for any weakness in the knots. Cold sweat trickled down her forehead. She had to focus. If she panicked, she would lose whatever small reserves of strength she had left. Her body was weak, hunger gnawed at her stomach, her throat burned with thirst, and heavy exhaustion pulled at her limbs—yet she refused to let it win. "I have to get out of here," she whispered, her voice hoarse and barely audible. Her breathing grew steady as she tried once more, twisting her wrists, searching for slack. The fibers rubbed continuously against raw skin, sending sharp jolts through her nerves. She clenched her jaw. Pain meant she was still alive. Pain meant she could still fight. Her vision swam and her strength waned, but she kept pulling. Hours could have passed... or maybe only minutes. Her body threatened to shut down completely. But she couldn't afford to give in. She let her head fall heavily against the freezing concrete floor, breathing heavily. Her fingers ached brutally, but the rope had loosened... just a fraction. It wasn't enough. Not yet. Darkness crept at the edges of her vision. She fought to stay conscious, but her physical limits failed her. Her breathing slowed, her mind clouded, and she slipped back into unconsciousness. "Who is this patient? Why are armed police guarding this entire floor?" a female voice asked in a whisper. "Didn't you read the news? Sienna Sterling. Second daughter of Richard Sterling. She was kidn*pped and brutally assaulted. Police found her after two days in an abandoned warehouse in the suburbs," replied another. The first voice gasped. "Poor girl... kidn*pped from her own family's corporate building, assaulted inside their own warehouse? Social media is claiming it's an act of revenge. Someone inside the family must be in cahoots with the culprits. Otherwise, how could the chairman's daughter be abducted despite having so many security guards?" The second nurse sighed. "Police identified three suspects out of five, but all three fled abroad immediately. I think something is fishy. The three suspects look completely impoverished. How could men like that afford international flights? Someone powerful must have paid a fortune to cover this up." "I heard she was a kind and brilliant woman. Everyone at headquarters loved her. Why would anyone target her so maliciously?" "Who knows... Wealthy families are full of dark secrets. Alright, we need to administer two injections now." "Wait! Her fingers are moving—her eyelashes too! Call the doctor immediately!" Sienna heard urgent, scrambling footsteps. A male doctor stood over her, checking her eyes. "Sienna Sterling. Can you hear me?" Sienna tried to speak, but only her dry lips trembled slightly. "She's regaining consciousness," the doctor told his staff. "Adjust her medication. Keep the police and her family updated." They left, leaving only a duty nurse scrolling on her phone. Searing thirst burned Sienna's throat. She gathered every ounce of strength to whisper, "Water..." The nurse quickly helped her drink. Once stable, the nurse informed the doctor. Moments later, after vitals were checked, her family entered—her father, Richard Sterling, her stepmother, and her stepsister, Chloe. Seeing them brought a wave of relief. Though her father was distant, her stepmother and Chloe had always shown her kindness. Two police officers stepped in to question her. "Please, officers, step back," Chloe interjected in a sharp, protective tone, standing between them and the bed. "She just woke up from horrific trauma. Speak to our legal team outside." The officers backed off. Her family offered gentle reassurances that everything was taken care of. Chloe held her hand, begging her not to dwell on the terrible night. The next day, family lawyers drafted a modified statement to protect both Sienna and the family enterprise. When police returned, Sienna carefully recited the exact version prepared for her. After seven days, Sienna was discharged. As she was wheeled toward the exit, a wall of journalists surged forward with flashing cameras. Hospital security shielded her, ushering her into a black SUV. Returning home to the Sterling estate brought no peace, only a heavy weight of exhaustion. In her bedroom, she picked up her personal phone. As expected, her name dominated the headlines. Suffocated and overwhelmed, she dialed the one person she desperately needed: her fiancé, Julian Vance, the fourth son of the powerful Vance family. "Don't worry, my love. I know everything," Julian's voice came through, warm and tender. "I'm overseas handling urgent business, but I'll fly back the moment it's done. Just rest and recover." His sweet words flooded her heart, easing the suffocating tension in her chest. Sienna closed her eyes, letting his affection soothe her shattered nerves. For now, that was enough.
