New Instincts

Sienna woke up in a haze, her vision swimming in a blurred world. Her ears twitched sharply as rhythmic, metallic beeping sounds flooded her awareness. Footsteps echoed nearby, and voices murmured in the distance with unnatural clarity. The thick, chemical scent of antiseptic burned her nostrils. Blinking rapidly, her vision slowly sharpened until the sterile walls of the infirmary came into focus. She tried to push herself up, but resistance caught her limbs. Her hands and ankles were still bound to the bed. Sensing her movement, Ethan stood up from his chair and walked to her side. "Good morning, Sienna. How do you feel?" Without thinking, she blurted out, "Nauseous. The antiseptic smell is overwhelming." She froze as her mind caught up with her surroundings. Turning her head toward Ethan, her voice trembled with quiet anticipation. "Ethan... did it work? Is the baby okay?" Ethan offered a warm, reassuring smile. "It was a complete success. Both you and your child are healthy and strong. My mother checked your vitals herself—there are no complications." Sienna glanced down at her bound wrists. "Then why am I still strapped down?" Ethan’s expression turned serious. "Look at your hands, Sienna. You're in your shifted state right now. Your body needs time to adapt to the transformation. Your senses are sharper, your strength is magnified, and your instincts are primal. Newly turned wolves often suffer uncontrollable surges of hunger, aggression, and intense emotion. The restraints are purely to keep you from accidentally hurting yourself. We’ll remove them once you adjust." Sienna focused inward. Her hearing was staggering—she could hear the distinct rhythm of both her heartbeat and Ethan’s from across the room. Looking up, she could see microscopic cracks in the ceiling paint that would have been invisible to human eyes. A strange, intoxicating surge of energy throbbed through her veins, making her feel wildly alive. "How am I supposed to get used to this body if I can't move?" she asked. "My mother called my grandmother," Ethan explained. "She’s an expert in training newly awakened wolves. She'll be here this afternoon to help you control your abilities and guide your instincts." Sienna hesitated. "And my child?" "Safe," Ethan reassured her. "Infused with Alpha vitality. However, because werewolf growth rates are far higher than humans', your pregnancy will progress much faster than normal." She absorbed the information in silence, her mind reeling from the monumental shift in her reality. Then, her stomach growled loudly. She flushed slightly. "I'm starving." That afternoon, a striking woman in a sharp executive suit entered the infirmary. Sienna was fast asleep, her body still restrained. The woman sat in a chair beside the bed, studying Sienna's resting form with cold, calculating eyes. Pulling out her phone, she dialed a number. "You still haven't sent me the detailed dossier on Sienna Sterling." She paused, listening. "Fifteen minutes is your deadline." Ten minutes later, her phone chimed. Opening the newly received file, she scrolled through Sienna’s history—her mother Evelyn’s corporate rise, the Sterling betrayal, and the recent blood ritual. A faint smirk touched her lips. "Such raw talent," she murmured. "Let's see how you perform under pressure." Her piercing gaze locked onto Sienna. "Wake up, Sienna. Training begins now." Sienna, who had fallen into a deep sleep after devouring a massive meal, jolted awake. She found herself staring into the commanding gaze of an older woman who exuded pure authority. She held the regal posture of an elite corporate leader, her sharp business suit contrasting with two alert wolf ears standing atop her head. Sienna swallowed hard, clearing her throat. "Hello..." The woman stood, stepping closer. "Sienna Sterling. Welcome to the family. I am Fiona Raynor, Matriarch of the Raynor pack. In this house, I am both the law and the executioner. Your only duty is to obey my instructions until I say otherwise. Understood?" Sienna’s breath hitched. Ethan had mentioned his grandmother, but he hadn't warned her about a matriarch who commanded a room like a military commander. "I... I understand," Sienna stammered. Fiona nodded. "Good. Follow me." She turned toward the door, then paused, remembering the straps. Without a word, she unbuckled the leather restraints, freeing Sienna’s limbs before striding out into the hall. Sienna swung her legs over the edge of the bed. Trying to stand, she realized her altered physiology threw off her balance. It took her three shaky attempts before she managed to stand upright on two feet. "Good," Fiona called back from the doorway. "Walk slowly. Your balance will calibrate quickly." Pausing at the door, Fiona added, "Change first. I left an outfit on the table." Sienna looked over and saw a neatly folded black outfit. When she picked it up, the material looked far too small for her currently enlarged form. Yet, as she pulled it on, the specialized fabric expanded seamlessly, fitting her body like a custom second skin. She slipped into the accompanying tactical boots and stepped out to follow Fiona. Fiona gave her an appraising glance. "Better." They descended the grand staircase. In the living room below, Professor Adrian Raynor sat on a plush couch working on his laptop. Noticing Sienna, he offered a warm, comforting smile. "Good afternoon, Sienna. It's good to see you on your feet." Sienna bowed slightly. "Good afternoon, Professor. It's good to see you as well." Fiona was already stepping through the heavy wooden front doors, and Sienna hurried to keep pace. As soon as she crossed the threshold, a cool, crisp breeze rushed over her skin. Surrounding the grand estate was an endless, pristine forest stretching to the horizon. A single paved driveway wound through the towering pines, but everywhere else was untouched nature, alive with the rustle of leaves and distant wildlife. The sight filled Sienna with a profound, unexpected sense of peace. It was vast, wild, and completely detached from the deceptive corporate world she had escaped. A small, genuine smile touched her lips. For the first time in months, she felt safe.
