The First Threat

The mansion felt suddenly smaller. Elena clutched Adrian’s arm as they approached the front entrance. His presence beside her was a strange mix of safety and intimidation—power wrapped in confidence. Outside, the night air was cool, sharp with a scent she couldn’t place—metal, danger, maybe smoke from the city. Figures in dark coats lingered near the gate. Not staff. Not visitors. Adrian’s jaw tightened. “They’ve been following you.” Elena froze. “Me? Why me?” “They know about the contract. They think it’s a weakness to exploit.” His tone was low, tense. Her heart skipped. This wasn’t just about a fake marriage anymore. This was real danger. “Who are they?” she asked quietly. “People who want something from me… and are willing to hurt you to get it.” Elena’s grip on his arm tightened. “I’m not a fighter.” “You don’t have to be,” he said. “Just stay behind me.” They stepped onto the wide porch. The figures straightened, clearly expecting someone. Adrian’s eyes scanned them quickly. “Three men. Probably armed.” Elena’s stomach twisted. She had faced rejection, heartbreak, humiliation—but this? This was something new. The tallest of the men stepped forward. “Adrian Voss,” he said smoothly, voice carrying. “We need to talk.” Adrian’s expression didn’t change. Calm, composed, terrifyingly unshakable. “You can talk, or you can leave. Your choice.” One of the men laughed, a low, threatening sound. “We don’t leave. Not until we get what we want.” Elena felt a surge of fear—but also a strange sense of thrill. The danger made her feel alive in a way nothing else had. Adrian turned to her, voice quiet. “Go inside. Now.” She hesitated. “I’m not leaving you—” “You will.” His gaze was firm, unyielding. “Trust me.” Reluctantly, she stepped back inside, eyes on him the entire time. Moments later, a sharp sound echoed outside. The men were moving closer. Adrian’s voice called softly from the doorframe. “Stay low.” Elena ducked behind a large pillar. She could hear muffled voices, the sound of footsteps crunching on gravel. Her heart pounded. This was supposed to be temporary. A fake marriage. Safe. But already, her life had become something she could barely recognize. Suddenly, one of the men’s voices cut through the night. “Step aside, Voss. You know what’s at stake.” Adrian didn’t respond. Then, without warning, the sound of a struggle—metal against metal, a sudden shout. Elena held her breath, frozen in place. And then she heard Adrian’s voice, calm, deadly calm: “You’re about to make a very big mistake.” A flash of movement. One of the men went down. Another screamed. Elena’s heart raced so fast she thought she might collapse. She peeked around the pillar just in time to see Adrian standing, perfectly composed, his jacket slightly rumpled, holding a man in a grip that looked impossibly strong. He let the man go, who crumpled to the ground unconscious. The third man froze, eyes wide, and then bolted. Elena’s knees almost gave out. Adrian turned, noticing her. His expression softened for a brief moment. “Are you okay?” “I… I think so,” she whispered, still shaking. “You will need to learn quickly,” he said, voice low. “Because the next time… they might not run.” Elena swallowed hard. She didn’t fully understand what kind of world she had stepped into, but one thing was clear: Adrian Voss was dangerous—and so was anyone who challenged him. And somehow… she was right in the middle of it. A phone buzzed on the side table. Adrian picked it up. The message was short. “We know where she is.” Elena’s heart froze.
