Elena stood in the center of Adrian’s office, staring down at the contract on the desk like it might explode.
Marriage.
Even if it was temporary, the word carried weight. It wasn’t something people just signed like a business agreement.
Yet Adrian Voss looked completely calm.
Like asking a stranger to marry him was as normal as ordering coffee.
Elena finally let out a breath she didn’t realize she had been holding.
“This has to be a joke.”
Adrian didn’t laugh.
“I don’t joke about business.”
She ran a hand through her hair, trying to process what was happening.
“You’re telling me that you want me—a woman you barely know—to marry you for one year?”
“Yes.”
“And after that?”
“We divorce.”
His tone was simple, almost casual, like the whole thing was a perfectly reasonable arrangement.
Elena shook her head.
“This is insane.”
Adrian leaned back in his chair, studying her reaction carefully.
“Is it?”
“Yes!” she snapped.
“People don’t marry strangers.”
Adrian raised one eyebrow.
“People marry for worse reasons every day.”
His calm confidence irritated her.
“You’re missing the point.”
“No,” he replied smoothly. “You are.”
Elena crossed her arms.
“Then explain it to me.”
Adrian stood up slowly.
His tall frame moved around the desk with quiet confidence until he stopped a few steps away from her.
Even standing still, he had a commanding presence.
It was impossible not to notice.
“Your life changed yesterday,” Adrian said.
Elena stiffened slightly.
“You lost your job.”
Her jaw tightened.
“You were betrayed by someone you trusted.”
Her chest felt tight again.
“And now,” Adrian continued calmly, “you’re standing in front of a decision that could change your future.”
Elena forced herself to hold his gaze.
“You sound like you’ve been studying my life.”
“I have.”
The answer came so easily that it startled her.
“You’ve been watching me?” she asked slowly.
“Researching.”
“That sounds worse.”
Adrian didn’t apologize.
“I don’t make important decisions without information.”
Elena felt a strange chill run through her.
“So you planned this.”
“Yes.”
Her voice lowered slightly.
“You planned to marry a stranger.”
“No,” Adrian corrected.
“I planned to marry you.”
For a moment, the room felt very quiet.
Elena wasn’t sure how to react to that.
Part of her felt uneasy.
Another part felt strangely curious.
“Why me?” she asked again.
Adrian didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he walked toward the large window overlooking the city.
“Do you know what most people want from me?”
She shrugged.
“Money. Power.”
“Exactly.”
He turned back to face her.
“They want my name, my wealth, my connections.”
“And I don’t?”
Adrian studied her carefully.
“No.”
Elena frowned.
“You barely know me.”
“I know enough.”
His gaze was steady.
“You walked away from your boyfriend without begging.”
The words caught her off guard.
“You lost your job and still came here today.”
He paused.
“Most people would have fallen apart.”
Elena’s voice softened slightly.
“You think I’m strong.”
“I think you’re honest.”
Something about the way he said it made her chest feel tight.
No one had described her that way before.
But she refused to let the moment distract her.
“That still doesn’t explain why you want to marry me.”
Adrian returned to the desk and tapped the contract lightly.
“My family wants me to marry someone I don’t choose.”
“And marrying me solves that problem?”
“For now.”
Elena laughed quietly.
“So I’m basically your shield.”
“You’re my partner,” Adrian corrected.
“Temporarily.”
She walked slowly toward the desk, reading through the contract again.
The amount of money still shocked her.
It could solve every financial problem she had.
Help her brother.
Give her a new start.
But something still bothered her.
“This contract says I have to live with you.”
“Yes.”
“Attend events with you.”
“Yes.”
“Pretend we’re actually married.”
“Yes.”
Elena looked up sharply.
“So this is more than a simple agreement.”
Adrian nodded once.
“We need to be convincing.”
Her stomach tightened.
“Why?”
Adrian’s expression grew slightly colder.
“Because some people would benefit if I failed.”
The answer sounded bigger than he was saying.
Elena stepped closer.
“You’re hiding something.”
“Of course I am.”
“You expect me to marry you without knowing the truth?”
Adrian’s eyes darkened slightly.
“You expect me to reveal everything to someone I met yesterday?”
They stood facing each other in tense silence.
The air between them felt strangely charged.
Finally Elena sighed.
“This is crazy.”
Adrian didn’t disagree.
“Probably.”
She looked down at the pen on the desk.
Her mind filled with memories of Daniel’s cruel words.
“You’re too ordinary.”
Anger stirred again.
Maybe Adrian was right about one thing.
Maybe this could change everything.
But one question still lingered.
“If I sign this,” she said slowly, “what happens to my life?”
Adrian stepped closer.
His voice lowered.
“Everything changes.”
He picked up the pen and placed it gently in her hand.
“Sign it.”
Elena stared down at the contract.
Her heart pounded.
Then she whispered,
“And what happens to me?”
Adrian’s answer was quiet.
“You become mine.”
