Evelyn, in shock, walked slowly towards a window table at the front of the shop and sat down. She didn’t know what to say. Was she OK? No, she wasn’t. Walking from the seafront to the coffee shop had felt like a dream; she couldn’t remember it at all, she’d been too deep inside her head. “Evey?” said Tom, again. “What is it?” “What’s wrong?” asked Janice, who’d just come out from the back store. “Evey, what’s wrong? You look awful.” “She had a meeting with her dad’s lawyer,” said Tom. Evelyn felt Janice’s bum pushing her towards the window, as her colleague sat down next to her. Then she felt Janice’s hand on hers. Reaching inside her bag, Evelyn pulled out a photo and placed it on the table for Tom and Janice to see.
