Chapter TwoAdolf Hyatt was known as the King throughout the Hobo Underground. It was an unusual honor bestowed upon an unusual man. Traditionally, there was an annual hobo convention in Britt, Iowa, where hoboes from around the country converged to name a King and Queen at a weekend celebration of life on the rails. In real life, the leaders of the hobo network met at a designated place once a year to exchange information, appoint elder statesmen who could settle disputes and make policy, and crown a King. The King of the Hoboes was the ultimate authority when the regional leaders could not agree on a decision.
