Olivia Westview Karen is James's wife. The words rang in my ears like a cruel taunt, louder and louder until they drowned out every coherent thought. I stood there, staring blankly at the door that had closed behind her. How had I not put it together before now? How had I been so blind? The weight of it all crashed down on me like a tidal wave. My chest tightened, and I gripped the edge of James’s desk to steady myself. The papers that scattered still lay strewn across the floor, but I couldn’t bring myself to move. Was I just some distraction? The thought hit me like a punch to the gut. I’d believed him when he said he cared about me. I’d believed his smiles, his lingering touches, the way his eyes softened when he looked at me. But now? Now it all felt like a lie. He has a wife.
