After I had settled in for the evening, Zaire pulled out his phone and tapped open the video call app. His mom's smiling face popped up almost immediately, followed by Celeste's and Rome's, who were squeezing themselves together to fit on the screen.
"Hey, y'all," Zaire greeted, grinning wide. I could hear the warmth in his voice from where I sat on the couch. It made me look up from my water bottle.
"Zaire! We just saw the news. How's everything?" Mom asked, her eyes bright with concern and curiosity.
"I'm good, Ma. Actually..." He took a deep breath, then looked over at me. I gave him a shy smile, suddenly feeling like I was on display. "We just had the scan today. And... we're having a girl."
His mom's eyes filled with tears. "A daughter! That's wonderful news, baby."
