Elena stumbled into her apartment that night, her entire body trembling. The ring on her finger felt heavy, like chains pulling her down into the deepest part of the ocean.
Daniel’s smile replayed in her mind the joy in his eyes, the way his hands shook as he slipped the ring on her. He loved her. He trusted her. He believed she was his.
And yet, every nerve in her body screamed a different truth. She belonged to someone else.
Her hands shook as she tried to take the ring off, but the metal seemed glued to her skin. She tugged, twisted, but her chest only tightened with each attempt. A sob broke from her throat.
“No… I can’t do this,” she whispered to herself, pressing her palms to her face.
Her chest heaved with uneven breaths, her body rocking as hot tears spilled down her cheeks. She curled onto the couch, hugging herself, trying to hold her pieces together. But the storm inside her wouldn’t calm.
Minutes, maybe hours, passed. She didn’t even hear the door until it clicked open behind her.
“Elena.”
That voice.
Her head snapped up, her tear-streaked face meeting the dark, commanding figure standing in her doorway. Adrian Blackwell.
Her heart leapt and stuttered, confusion mixing with relief, anger, and longing all at once. “H-how—what are you doing here?” Her voice cracked, fragile.
Adrian stepped inside without asking, closing the door firmly behind him. He moved with purpose, his presence filling every corner of her small apartment. His eyes locked on her—sharp, unreadable, but burning.
“I knew something was wrong,” he said simply, his voice low, rough around the edges. “I couldn’t leave you like this.”
Elena shook her head, swiping at her tears. “You shouldn’t be here. Not tonight. Not after—”
Her words broke as she held up her trembling hand, the diamond catching the dim light.
Adrian’s gaze hardened instantly. He crossed the room in two strides, gripping her wrist, his eyes fixed on the ring. His jaw tightened, every muscle in his body coiled with tension.
“So it’s true,” he said darkly. “He proposed.”
Elena’s lip quivered. “I-I said yes.”
The silence that followed was suffocating. Adrian’s chest rose sharply, his grip tightening just enough for her to feel his fury pulsing beneath his skin.
“Do you love him?” he demanded, his voice low but seething.
Elena’s eyes filled again, spilling over. “I don’t know anymore.”
The words shattered in the air, and so did she. She broke, collapsing against him with a sob that shook her entire frame.
Adrian caught her instantly, pulling her into his chest, his arms like steel bands around her. One hand tangled in her hair, holding her against him as if anchoring her to the earth itself.
“Shh… I’ve got you,” he whispered against her temple, his voice softer now, though his body trembled with restrained emotion.
Elena clutched his shirt desperately, her tears soaking into the fabric. “I feel like I’m drowning, Adrian. I can’t breathe. I can’t think. I can’t…”
His hand cupped her cheek, forcing her to look up at him. His eyes were no longer cold—they were raw, vulnerable, burning with something she wasn’t sure she could survive.
“You’re mine, Elena,” he said, every word deliberate, dangerous. “And I’ll never let you go. Not to him. Not to anyone.”
Her lips parted, a protest on her tongue, but it died when Adrian’s mouth claimed hers in a brutal, desperate kiss.
This wasn’t like the rain. This wasn’t controlled. This was hunger. Need. Possession.
Elena moaned against his lips, her body melting into his even as guilt clawed at her. But guilt was powerless compared to the fire consuming her veins.
Adrian’s hands roamed, gripping her waist, pulling her onto his lap as if he couldn’t bear even an inch of distance. Their breaths mingled, ragged and feverish.
“Elena,” he growled against her lips, his forehead pressed to hers. “Say it. Say you’re mine.”
Tears streamed down her cheeks as she whispered the words that sealed her fate.
“I’m yours.”
Adrian’s eyes blazed, his mouth crashing onto hers again, sealing her confession with fire.
And in that moment, there was no Daniel. No ring. No guilt.
There was only Adrian Blackwell.
