The Man At The Door

1493 Words
The handle rattled again. Aurora’s pulse thundered in her ears as she stared at the door, half expecting it to burst open any second. The small safehouse suddenly felt too tight, the air thick with tension. Damian stood a few steps in front of her, gun raised but steady. Even injured, he moved like a man built for danger—calm, controlled, lethal. Outside, the voice spoke again. “Damian,” it called, low and patient. “I know you’re in there.” Aurora swallowed. “Who is that?” Damian didn’t look back at her. “Someone I hoped I wouldn’t see again.” The words sent a chill down her spine. The handle stopped rattling. For a moment there was silence—heavy and expectant. Then a soft knock. Not aggressive. Not threatening. Almost… polite. “Open the door,” the voice said again. “Before Viktor’s men find this place.” Aurora’s eyes widened. “They know about this place?” Damian’s jaw tightened. Slowly, carefully, he lowered the gun just a few inches. “That depends on him.” “Him?” Instead of answering, Damian stepped toward the door. Aurora grabbed his arm instinctively. “You’re not seriously opening it.” His gaze flicked to her hand, then back to her face. “If he wanted us dead,” he said quietly, “we already would be.” That didn’t make her feel any better. But before she could argue, Damian reached for the lock. Click. The door opened. Rain spilled in with the wind, along with the tall figure standing on the other side. The man looked like he had stepped straight out of the shadows. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Dark coat soaked from the storm. His black hair was slicked back, and faint stubble shadowed his sharp jawline. But it was his eyes that made Aurora uneasy. Cold. Calculating. The kind of eyes that saw everything. They swept across the room before landing on Damian. “Well,” the man said dryly. “You look terrible.” Damian leaned slightly against the doorframe, clearly irritated. “Nice to see you too, Luca.” Aurora blinked. Luca stepped inside, shutting the door behind him like he owned the place. “So Viktor finally caught up to you,” he said casually. “I was wondering how long that would take.” Aurora stared at the two men. “You two know each other?” Both men looked at her at the same time. Luca’s gaze sharpened immediately. “Ah,” he said slowly. “So this is her.” Aurora stiffened. “This is who?” Luca ignored her question. Instead he walked closer, studying her with unsettling interest. “Viktor’s men are tearing the city apart looking for you,” he said to Damian. “And now I see why.” Damian stepped forward slightly. “That’s enough.” Luca’s mouth twitched with amusement. “Relax. I’m not going to steal her.” Aurora crossed her arms. “Excuse me?” Luca finally gave her his full attention. “Let me guess,” he said. “Aurora.” Her heart skipped. “How do you know my name?” “Because Viktor knows your name.” The room went silent. Aurora looked at Damian. “You told him about me?” “I didn’t have to,” Luca answered instead. “Viktor already knows.” A cold knot formed in Aurora’s stomach. “How?” Luca shrugged slightly. “You’ve become very important very quickly.” Damian’s voice turned sharp. “Why are you here, Luca?” The man’s expression lost its humor. “To save your life.” Damian snorted. “I’ve been saving my own life for years.” “And how’s that going tonight?” Luca gestured to the bandage around Damian’s ribs. Aurora noticed the tension in Damian’s shoulders. These two had history. Dangerous history. Luca walked to the small table and casually picked up the bullet Aurora had removed earlier. He turned it between his fingers thoughtfully. “You’re bleeding. Viktor is angry. And half his network is looking for you.” He looked up. “You’re running out of options.” Damian didn’t respond. Instead he asked quietly: “What do you want?” Luca smiled faintly. “Straight to business. I missed that about you.” Aurora stepped closer to Damian. “I’m still waiting for someone to explain what’s going on.” Luca looked at her again. “Your boyfriend hasn’t told you?” “We’re not—” “He’s not my boyfriend,” Aurora finished quickly. Luca chuckled softly. “That makes this even more interesting.” Damian’s patience snapped. “Luca.” The warning in his voice was unmistakable. Luca raised his hands slightly in surrender. “Fine.” He turned serious again. “Viktor isn’t just hunting you now.” His gaze shifted back to Aurora. “He’s hunting her.” Aurora felt her chest tighten. “I already figured that out.” “No,” Luca said quietly. “You didn’t.” Damian went still. Aurora noticed the change immediately. “What does that mean?” Luca sighed. “This is the part where things get complicated.” Damian’s voice dropped dangerously low. “Don’t.” Luca ignored him. “Aurora,” he said calmly, “Viktor doesn’t want you because you’re close to Damian.” Her stomach twisted. “Then why?” Luca’s answer came slowly. “Because of your father.” The room spun slightly. “My father?” “Yes.” Aurora shook her head. “My father died years ago.” Luca exchanged a look with Damian. Something silent passed between them. Something heavy. Finally Luca spoke again. “You might want to sit down.” Aurora’s heart pounded harder. “Just tell me.” Luca studied her for a moment before saying the words that shattered everything. “Your father worked for Viktor.” The air left Aurora’s lungs. “No.” Damian finally spoke. “It’s true.” She stared at him in disbelief. “You knew?” “I suspected.” Aurora shook her head again, panic rising. “That’s impossible. My father was a businessman.” Luca laughed quietly. “Yes.” “Illegal weapons and financial laundering are technically business.” Aurora felt like the ground had disappeared beneath her. “This… this can’t be real.” But deep down, a small part of her remembered things. Her father’s sudden trips. The secrets. The night everything fell apart. “Why didn’t you tell me?” she whispered to Damian. His expression softened slightly. “Because it wouldn’t change anything.” “It changes everything!” Luca leaned against the table. “Actually, it explains a lot.” Aurora turned to him sharply. “What does that mean?” “It means Viktor isn’t just hunting you,” Luca said. “He’s reclaiming you.” Her blood ran cold. “I’m not some kind of property.” “To him you are.” Damian stepped forward again, fury flashing in his eyes. “She’s not going anywhere near Viktor.” Luca raised an eyebrow. “You might not get a choice.” The words hung heavily in the air. Aurora’s thoughts raced. Everything she believed about her past suddenly felt fragile. Dangerous. “Why now?” she asked quietly. “Why is Viktor coming after me now?” Luca looked at Damian. “Because of something he stole.” Aurora frowned. “What did he steal?” Damian’s jaw tightened. Luca answered for him. “His empire.” Silence fell again. Aurora looked between them. “You betrayed Viktor.” Damian met her gaze. “Yes.” “And now he wants revenge.” “More than that,” Luca said softly. “He wants control again.” Aurora’s heart pounded harder. “And I’m part of that control?” Luca nodded. “Unfortunately.” Before Aurora could respond— A loud crash echoed outside. All three of them froze. Then came the unmistakable sound of multiple car doors slamming. Aurora’s blood turned to ice. “Damian…” she whispered. He walked to the window carefully and pulled the curtain aside. His expression darkened instantly. “How many?” Luca asked. “Too many.” Aurora’s stomach dropped. “Viktor’s men?” Damian nodded slowly. “And they brought reinforcements.” Headlights flooded the windows of the safehouse. Voices echoed outside. Weapons clicked. Aurora’s pulse raced as she realized the terrifying truth. They were surrounded. Luca sighed. “Well,” he said calmly. “This just got interesting.” Damian turned toward Aurora, his eyes burning with determination. “Stay behind me.” Aurora’s heart pounded. “Damian—” But he was already raising his gun again. Outside, someone shouted an order. Then— The first bullet tore through the window. And the war truly began.
