Next morning Julie drove to the mall. At a stationers, she bought a few pink note cards and envelopes. Back in her room she addressed the envelope to Slater. Inside the card she wrote the following note:
Dear Sir:
My Master told me I was insolent to you. For that I apologize most humbly and on my knees.
Obediently yours,
Julie, slave of Thomas Blaine
Underneath she drew the silhouette in profile of a naked woman on her knees bowing. That evening when it was time for her nightly visit to his office she brought him the note. “What’s this?” he asked.
“It’s a note for Mr. Slater. It’s an apology.”
He took the note and read it. He chuckled. “This is very good. I especially like the picture. I didn’t know you could draw. Mail it tomorrow. Now get on the bench.”
