Ava’s POV:
‘HE’S A WOLF! NO, No, no, no, no!!! That’s it, I’ve completely lost it.’ I sped through the forest barefoot, snapping branches and crushing leaves beneath my feet. In the early morning light, not far behind Axel's, Jet Black Wolf raced after me like a shadow leaping towards me. ‘Outrunning a wolf was a stupid plan, but I’m not running away from a werewolf, but what could be a man that is a wolf… Possibly a hallucination...’, I tried wrapping my head around the idea. ‘There is no way that a man can be a wolf! I ain’t that crazy.’
I looked back to see an extremely pissed off wolf lunging toward me at the speed of light as my foot stumbled over a rock, making me fly into the ground face first, eating dirt. Getting on my knees, I grabbed my nose, brushing the dirt away. Oh, god! It hurts! It hurts, but I don’t think it’s broken. I slowly turned around expecting to see a wolf ready to pounce, but instead it was on the ground snorting and panting hard like it was dying of laughter. I had never seen a dog laugh and it was oddly irritating, but somewhat cute. It’s totally making fun of me…
Knowing that I wasn’t going to get very far with this wolf hot on my trail, I started to climb up the nearest tree as high as I could get while he was distracted. The wolf’s bones started crackling into a human form, Axel, who was stark naked as the day he was born with all his glory to show the world. His package was f*****g huge! I quickly averted my eyes, even though I’m sure my beet-red face was giving me away. Oh, god! One moment he’s a wolf and the next he’s a f*****g god like man! My sanity is at Risk!
“For f**k's sake, woman! A tree?! Really!” He yelled, frustrated.
“Yes, for f**k's sake! And my name is not woman, it’s Ava! What did you give me, you crazy cultist freak?!”
“What?” He looked at me like I was insane. “First off, NO one did anything to you. Secondly, I’m not a cultist freak. And thirdly, what you saw was real, so you had better start respecting me, woman.”
“Ava!” I corrected. “And you can’t possibly expect me to believe you’re a werewolf. You might as well tell me witches and dragons exist!”
“They do.”
“I don’t believe you.”
“Then what are you doing up in a tree?”
“… The view.” I said awkwardly.
“Well, then. Do take it all in.” He said, gesturing to himself, putting his hands on his hips, as my cheeks began to burn. I totally set myself up for that… “Like what you see?” He grinned.
“I’ve seen better.” I lied.
“Has anyone ever told you that you’re a terrible liar.” He began to shake the tree trying to get me to lose my balance, so I’d fall out.
“Okay, Okay! Just stop!” I said, gripping onto a thin branch for dear life.
“You ready to listen to me?” He stopped shaking the tree.
“You have to promise that you won’t hurt me.” I stared down suspiciously.
He scoffed offended. “I would never harm you or let anyone else, for that matter." He said with a pained expression, making me feel guilty.
“Okay.” I said flatly. ‘I have nowhere to go.’ Gulping, I climbed down.
“You trust me just like that?” He questioned, clearly suspicious.
“If you were lying you would’ve continued shaking the tree.” I reasoned. He seemed surprised by my answer and started laughing. “What?”
“After all that, that’s what makes you decide to trust me. Don’t you think that’s a bit naïve?” He says, amused.
“I never said I trusted you and it’s not like I had a lot of options,” I retorted.
“Fair enough.” He smiled. “I’ve never in my whole life met a woman as difficult as you.”
“Why, thank you.” I smiled softly.
“Feisty aren’t we?” He sighed. “How about a do over?”
“…Sure.”
“I’m Axel Conri`, your mate.”
“I’m Ava Small. I don’t know about mate, but maybe friends?”
“Ava…,” he mumbled. “It suits you.” “No, not friends. A soulmate is blessed to us by the moon goddess.” “Here.” He held out his hand. “Touch my hand and tell me what you feel.”
I did as he instructed, feeling shock waves flow through me. “Sparks?”
“That’s how we can tell who our mates are. We can also tell by smell. For example, you smell like apples and blueberries. Your scent is intoxicating.”
“That’s not creepy at all.”
“My inner wolf’s name is Hades. When my eyes are black, that’s when he has control. He’s already stupidly head over heels for you.” “You won’t be able to communicate with him until I mark you though.”
“Ummm…no. You can’t pee on me! That’s gross man!” I said, backing up a few inches away from him, disgusted.
“I’m not a dog marking its territory!” He said, insulted. “And not right now, of course. A mark is something we do when we mate. I bite your neck and it forms a tattoo that links us in body and soul. It also shows other unmated males my claim on you,” he explains.
“Claim on me? Like property?” I asked, trying to refrain myself from getting upset before I got all my questions answered.
“That’s one way you can look at it. But it’s more like a permanent wedding ring.”
“That’s romantic,” I said sarcastically. “It’s a nice sentiment, but I don’t believe in love.” He looked at me like I was an alien. “Look, experience has taught me there’s lust and then there’s trust. All which leads to humiliation and betrayal.” “And to be clear, I won’t be your property.”
“You’ll be my queen.”
“As much as I’d love to, I’d love even more not to.” I smiled. “Sounds like work and I rather enjoy my simple life.” To be honest, it sounds nice. He might even be able to help me find my home, but it’s not worth throwing away my pride and dignity.
“I have never met a creature as strange as you. And while I find it amusing, I want to make something clear. From the moment you stepped into that dining room, You Were Mine.” He gently wrapped his arms around my waist, holding me close, bringing his head to the side of my neck. And yes, he was still very, Very, naked. “And if you try to run again, I will tie you up and mark you in front of everyone. Am I clear?” He breathed his husky breath into my ear, sending shivers down my spine in a deadly serious voice.
“I can’t promise you anything.” I answered honestly, trying to fight the sparks.
“I think we should head back to the castle now.” He said, upset, releasing me.
He transformed into his massive black wolf. This time I didn’t run. I would just lose that race anyway and, plus, I was a bit curious. My instincts were telling me that I was safe. And against my better judgement, I reached out my hand and ran my fingers through his thick soft coat. Even as a wolf, he had piercing blue eyes that seemed to melt my heart. Slowly stroking his soft fur, he started to purr under my touch. I couldn’t help, but think he was cute, so I hugged him tight around his neck. I could feel him tense up, but slowly relax. He was like a giant bear stuff animal! I love stuff animals! I looked into his eyes that were now black. “I guess I have to accept that werewolves are real.” I winked as he licked my face. “Let’s head back.” I held onto his fur as we walked back to the castle.
It was kind of funny how he would growl at anyone who looked at me even though it wasn’t their fault I was dressed indecently. He walked me all the way to the servant's quarters and never left my side, even when I told him I’d be fine. He’s literally waiting right outside my room right now. If he’s always going to be like this, running away is going to be a problem. God! I hope he lets me use the restroom alone! I don’t do that thing where couples take shits together! That’s just gross!!
“Ava, there’s an Alpha waiting outside our room?” Tonya whispered, walking in. “Who are you?” She said, staring at me wide-eyed as I slipped on some of my clothing. This time I didn’t cover my face or hair. She had never seen my true appearance, even though we shared a room. I was always very careful, even around her. “Why are you going through Ava’s things?!”
“Hey, Tonya. I guess you found out my little secret.” “You knew about werewolves?”
“Ava?!” She gasped in realization. “Your, your, your beautiful. I thought you said….” She stuttered.
“Yeah, that was a lie. Pretty much every rumor you’ve ever heard about me has been a load of crap.”
“I called it!” She clapped her hands, jumping happily.
“What?” I asked, confused.
“Has anyone ever told you you’re a terrible liar.” She grinned. “We all knew something was up, but we just figured that it was really bad.” “I’m so excited that it was this!! Why are you hiding how beautiful you are?! God, your gorgeous. I could totally go gay for you.” We laughed.
“I might be okay with that, if I get to eat your cooking for the rest of my life.” I laughed as we heard a growl from behind the door. God, does he have some freaking ridiculous super hearing or something?! I wouldn’t put it past him since he is a freaking werewolf. “We’re kidding!” I said just in case. “That’s King Axel. He thinks I’m his mate.” I looked back at Tonya, who seemed to be getting pale.
“Oh, my gosh! Luna, pardon my rudeness.” She bowed respectfully.
“What?” I looked at her confused. “Why’d you call me Luna? And Tonya, you and Billy are like my closet friends, so please don’t talk like that and, most importantly, never bow to me. It makes me feel very uncomfortable.”
“Umm, okay...” She hesitated. “A Luna is what an Alpha’s mate is called. Don’t you know about wolves?” She asked as I shook my head no. “How do you not know? It’s like you’ve been living under a rock all your life.” She said in disbelief. “You really are a mystery. Werewolves are well known since all the kingdoms are ruled by them in this area. I’m human, just so you know.” “So, at the top of the chain is the Alpha King of all Alphas and then his Luna. Next are the other Alphas and their Luna’s. After that are the Beta’s, third in command, and finally the regular wolves.”
“What about Omegas?” I questioned, remembering what Axel said.
“Omega’s?” She questioned, confused. “Omegas were at the bottom of the chain.”
“Were?” My eyes widened.
“Omegas were the weakest out of all the werewolves and ended up dying out. Many of them committed suicide.”
“What?! Why?!”
“Because of the Heat Pull, many of them ended up getting r***d and used. They were treated worse than humans.” She said, looking down at her feet. “How is it that you heard of Omegas and not the rest of the werewolf world?”
“I’ve heard the word heat before, but I don’t know what that is.” I said, ignoring her question.
“So, once every 3 months, an Omega goes through an intense craving for s*x. Their bodies start to heat up and they become delirious. Almost like they’re drunk, though from what I heard it can be very painful if they don’t end up having s*x. During the heat pull, is when their bodies are most susceptible to getting pregnant. The heat also gives off a smell that werewolves find intoxicating. Alphas are said to go mad when they catch the scent of an Omega in heat. Anyways, that’s everything I know. Why do you ask?”
“It’s nothing.” I muttered. “How do you know so much about this?”
“My brother, Christopher, is a werewolf. We’re step-siblings. He used to tell me all sorts of things.” She said in a sad tone, looking at the ground.
“Used to?”
She smiled lightly. “He went rogue a few years back.”
“I’m sorry, what does rogue mean?”
“Rogues are werewolves that have no pack. They usually go insane and become evil. That’s why most rogues are criminals. If a pack member breaks an Alphas rule, they are kicked out of the pack and made rogue, but some actually choose to go rogue. My brother chose to go rogue and I still have no idea what he was thinking. However, the most vicious rogues are the wolves that have their mates taken from them. They literally go insane.”
‘Will that happen to Axel if I runaway? Will he become a killer? Will it be my fault if he kills someone?’ I thought to myself, staring intently at the ground. ‘I can’t live a life feeling responsible for someone else’s actions. I refuse to be chained down. I feel bad, but I have to be true to myself. I’m sorry, Axel, but first chance I get I’M RUNNING.’
