Chapter 3-
Ava's POV:
In a dark space with no light in every which direction as far as the eye can see; up, down, left, right, forward, and behind, only darkness. Walking straight through an endless black hole, I narrowed in toward a small entrance of light. As I got closer to the light, I noticed it was seeping through a frosted window. On the other side, I saw myself in my bed, the bed that I used to sleep on up until 10 months ago, the bed that brought me safety from within my home where my family resided. How I miss that bed….
“Ava! Get up baby. It’s already 4 in the afternoon.” I watched my mother, Elizabeth, call out to the girl that was me sleeping soundly.
“Ugh…, 30 more minutes.” I groaned, shifting my body further under the blankets.
“No. You need to get ready and do things. Get out and have fun.” She pestered.
“No English. Hablo español.” I whined, hiding my head under my pillow.
“Ha, Ha, Ha.” She said sarcastically. “If you're not up in the next 5 minutes I will call your brothers in here to flip your mattress over.”
“Ugh.” “Where’s the love?” I whined, throwing the covers off of me, sitting up rubbing my eyes.
“It’s called tough love.” My mom smiled, leaving the room. She had dark brown hair and hazel blue eyes.
In the darkness I tried to scream to myself, ‘Hug your mother! Tell her you love her!’, but nothing came out, like my voice was nothing, but a wisp of air choked out of existence by some cruel twist of fate and then the window disappeared.
Walking further into the darkness, I found another source of light, this time looking through the opposite side of a mirror, finding myself looking back at myself, but not really me, the mirror. I looked nothing like my parents or siblings, who all had brown hair and brown eyes for the most part. My youngest brother, Brisk, was 5 and, like me, he also didn’t look like my parents or other siblings. He had short blond curls, blue eyes, and freckles. I called him my baby blue-eyed angel.
She, which was me, pulled back her red long wavy red hair into a cute messy bun while jamming out to some classic rock. Using my toothbrush as a microphone, I sang along, swaying my hips in my beautiful summer white dress that accentuated my amazing curves. After watching myself finishing most of my morning routine I heard myself say, “You can do anything.”, with a gentle smile, as I watched myself fade away back into the black abyss.
Just as before, I found yet another bit of light this time flowing through a glass of water on my mom’s dinner table. There I was again, walking in the kitchen finding Brisk sniffling, looking down at his homework. I missed him the most out of everyone I lost. He was my treasure, my pride and joy. My mom had him practicing his numbers and writing for his first day of school. Let's just say he wasn’t that enthusiastic about schoolwork when he could be playing with his brand new toy car.
“Brisk? What’s wrong hun?” I asked softly.
“Sissy!” He started to sob and hyperventilate. “Mm-mm-o-mm sa th-t I haveee too…”.
“Oh, baby.” “You have to calm down. I don’t know what you're trying to say.” I said, holding him in my arms. I looked at the problems on the paper. “Mom wants you to do these math problems?”
“Yes.” He sobbed.
“Do you want me to help?”
“Please!” He sobbed, not calming down in the slightest.
“If you don’t calm down, I can’t help you.” “Plus, you’re getting tears and snot all over me. And that’s just gross.” I crunched my nose all dramatically, making him giggle. “Lets see what we got here. 3+4 equals what?” “Let’s use some marshmallows to solve this and then we can eat them when we're done.” I winked as he cheered excitedly, wiping away his big monster tears as again the scene disappeared.
This time I was on the other side of a freezer door watching myself push a cart between the frozen food and bread aisle of a grocery store as I noticed Daniel come into the frame. I remember this incident being rather uncomfortable and extremely irritating. As like most of my previous run-ins with him have been him begging to get into my pants. I found him to be repulsive.
“Ava! Coincidence bumping into you here!” He flirted.
“Yeah.” I smiled awkwardly, reaching towards some bread.
“It must be fate!”
‘Or not?’ I thought.
“Let's get something to eat together.” He grabbed my arm, pulling towards the fast food area of the store.
“I’m actually busy.” I squirmed, getting out of his death grip.
“You know Ava, you're beautiful.” He ignored me.
“I know.”
“And I’m a handsome guy.” He said, flexing his gross noodle arms. I’m not one to be judgmental, but I just was not physically attracted to the guy at all. AT ALL.
“Haha.” I nervously laughed, trying not to hurt the guy's feelings.
“We should go out.”
“I’m not dating right now. I just got out of an abusive relationship, so yeah.”
“I wouldn’t do anything you didn’t like, except for hit your ass during s*x. I’m a good guy.” He continued to ignore my attempts of rejection. What a d**k!
“No. Maybe try internet dating.” I suggested trying to keep my cool.
“I tried, but all I got was the fat chicks. And I don’t do fat chicks. As long as you don’t get fat, we will make a perfect couple.” He explained.
“That’s it!” I grabbed my cart and started to roll away. ‘I just can’t with this asshole,’ was what the look on my face was saying.
“Wait up!” He followed.
“I’m not interested in you, so please leave.” I said, trying my best not to go off on the bastard.
“I could walk you home. That’s the least I could do as a gentleman.” He said, raising his nose like a snob.
I could just feel the fabric of reality snap as I lost all patience.
“A GENTLEMAN is not as shallow as you. LEAVE. ME. ALONE!” I yelled, watching myself walking off without my cart as the light faded away again.
I’ve dealt with a lot of nasty men that looked down on women, but Daniel was one of the worst ones. He has always been so damn persistent, which would be a good quality if he used it for something more productive other than harassing me.
Walking in the darkness, I found the frosted window again, this time showing me walking into my room crashing onto my beautiful comfy bed when my baby brother, Brisk, snuck into my room and crawled over into bed with me. He was my little snuggle bug.
“Sissy, sing me a song!” He said, squeezing my cheeks together with his little hands, making my face look like a fish. I tickled his sides as he let go, giggling. “Stop. Stop. Stop!” He laughed.
“Okay.” I kissed his forehead. “…I love you in the morning” “and in the afternoon”, I sang softly as I fell asleep.
From within the dark I tried to scream again, ‘DON’T FALL ASLEEP! DON’T! WAKE UP!’ while trying to bang on the window. I wanted to shatter the glass but was unable to make a sound or even move a muscle. I stood there silently with my arms down to my side as once more the scene disappeared.
This time, the scene I saw was from within a puddle in the middle of a forest. My gut felt sick as a bad feeling started to snake around my entire being. Something bad was going to happen. I remember this forest. I DON’T want to SEE this memory!
The next thing I know, I see myself waking up in the forest alone. “Brisk! Brisk!” I screamed in a panic. Then I heard the growls racing towards me. My heart began to pound in my chest. I was running away from the growls. Afraid and running, I tripped and sprained my ankle. I pushed myself into some bushes when I saw a group of men and very big dogs surrounding a blond-haired woman who was wearing beautiful sheer clothing. She was panting on her knees.
I don’t want to see THIS! It was like the darkness was holding my eyes open and in place from looking away. I began to tear up as I watched myself watch the group of men and dogs circle around the blond woman.
“Running away? That’s not very smart.” One of the men said venomously.
“Please…” She pleaded as a small sob escaped her lips.
“It’s a shame. You're really very beautiful, but it’s too late. I can’t have my property running off, now can I?” He said, snapping his spindly fingers. The rough, murderous, snarling dogs jumped on her, ripping her from limb to limb, while she sent blood-curdling screams echoing in the wind. I was frozen in time watching the dogs sink their teeth slowly into her beautiful tan skin, tearing and ripping her bones apart as she made gurgling sounds. Eventually, she laid still while the dogs fought over her remains like it was a tug of war. My stomach wanted to empty out its contents just at the sight of her flesh, tendons, and bones scattered everywhere, reminding me of a thanksgiving dinner gone wrong.
‘Run! Run! RUN!’ I screamed in the back of my head, unable to move an inch, staring at the gory sight before me when one of the dogs made direct eye contact with myself, who was curled up hiding in the bushes.
Axel's POV:
“Wake up!” I yelled, trying to shake her awake. I woke up to her breathing hard, trembling in her sleep. ‘She’s sweating bullets; she’s so scared.’ “Please wakeup.” I held her in my arms close to my chest, rocking her back and forth worried. “It’s just a nightmare. I’m here. I’m here….”. Her breathing slowed and her body stopped shaking. “It’s okay. You're safe.” I said, soothing her as she looked up at me with her gorgeous golden green eyes as I ran my fingers through her hair gently. She immediately tensed up, frozen in place with wide eyes. “Are you okay?”
