EVELYN
"Okay. I'll quit," Evelyn said, her indifference made Dominic look taken aback. He watched her carefully, but he couldn't figure anything out.
"You can't go back on that," he stated, giving her a final warning.
"I won't," she pasted a neutral look on her face that was way too determined to care about losing her steady income. He looked at her like she was joking but didn’t care to ask. He was getting what he wanted anyway.
Dominic strode inside Deccans and Evelyn followed him, already weak in the knees. He had told her strictly that she couldn't join the meeting with him, but he would take her through the security, and that was all she needed. Lucas had said he didn't know who she was, he didn’t remember his wife. That had to be a lie, right? There was no way it wasn’t.
Dominic walked into the dining area and moved over to the table where Evelyn saw Lucas again, rising to greet Dominic. Her heart thudded, the shallow feeling in her stomach only grew. His perfect face seemed so distant, it hurt her.
Evelyn kept her safe distance and moved closer to their table so that none of them saw her, shaking the whole time. Lucas had a dazzling smile, and so did the woman while greeting Dominic.
"We are so glad you could come here in person, Mr. Beaumont. We have been trying to get this meeting set up for months," the woman marveled at him, and Lucas nodded, his mannerisms so familiar it hurt Evelyn deep inside.
"We have been keeping ourselves busy, but let’s get down to business. What is this meeting about?" Dominic said, straight to the point without entertaining any filler conversations. He stole glances at her to make sure she wasn’t trying to disrupt them. Little did her boss know what she was going through.
"We wanted to see you regarding a collaboration. We are an IT tech company, Solaris, and we have been recently approached by a huge lead. They are looking for a smart home, a 12-story building completely AI powered and technology-based," Lucas said, focused on making his words sell. "We knew we could only trust your company to be partners for this project. We’re talking millions, Mr. Beaumont. We trust your company to help us land this, can’t afford to screw it up."
Evelyn thought about the fact that it really did sound like a good deal. Beaumont and Co. was a real estate company, the best in the country. But... Lucas... when did he join Solaris and become a spokesperson? Solaris was well known for years, but Lucas wasn’t involved in it three years ago when they were married. Her mind started spiraling; this was off-putting.
"Consider me interested, what’s your pitch?" Dominic said like he was testing them.
"But first, I'm Lucas Harrison, Vice President of Solaris. And this is Diana Anderson, my beautiful fiancée," he smiled widely as she lovingly pressed his hands, shaking hands with Dominic. Her luscious blonde hair fell to her side, dark eyes staring at Lucas like he was the only man on Earth. Evelyn knew that look. She used to wear it for him.
Every sound drowned out for Evelyn as she let those words settle in. Lucas had a fiancée that he introduced so proudly, like she was the love of his life. Evelyn decided she could physically not stay there anymore; she had to leave immediately. So, she did. She ran away, leaving as fast as she could, leaving it all behind, hoping hard that this would turn out to be a dream. But this was reality.
Her dead husband was alive, he owned a company, and was getting married.

The next morning, she woke up to her ringtone echoing through the room. She woke up, her eyes puffy; it was almost 8. She had crumpled into her crammed bed and cried the entire night. A moment of panic took over as she was late for work, but...
Realization hit her as she fell back on the bed. She had no job.
She picked up her phone, and her eyes widened at the 15 missed calls. But when she looked at who had been calling her since morning, her heart jumped up. Dominic Beaumont, the devil himself. She was just about to panic when his 16th call lit up the phone. Evelyn picked up the call with shaky hands, knowing she was done for.
"Where the f**k are you?" He growled over the call.
"S-sir, I am at home," her voice was like a whisper.
"Come to the office, right now. Do you even realize what time it is?" He sounded so angry that it made her shudder.
"But, I already emailed my resignation last night as discussed, I don’t understand—"
"How long have you been here? Are you an i***t? Do you not know you have to give your resignation in person?" He yelled again, making her flinch. She didn't know of any such rule.
"I'm sorry, I'll come right away, sir," she said, and the phone disconnected immediately. She closed her eyes, trying to calm herself down. There was no changing Dominic’s mind, especially when he wanted her out of the company for so long.
Evelyn's dad was childhood friends with Dominic's dad. When her dad passed away, he told her that if she ever needed help after he’s gone, she should go to John Beaumont. After Evelyn was kicked out of her house after Lucas's death, she was hopeless. She had no roof, no money, no one. That’s when she went to John Beaumont, and he gave her a job at Beaumont and Co.
He had said, "Your father had done so much for me, and I could never return it. I’m so glad you came to me, kid. I can finally repay Martin."

Evelyn stepped out on the 7th floor, her nerves all scrambled. All the employees stared back at her, waiting for her to be screamed at again because she was 30 minutes late. They didn’t know she was quitting.
Holding her breath, she knocked on his cabin door and asked to come inside.
Dominic Beaumont sat there, staring at a red dossier in his white shirt and navy blue vest. He looked picture-perfect as always, his dark hair falling naturally on his forehead and his blue eyes scanning the paper seriously. Evelyn leaned in and placed her resignation letter on his desk. He pretended not to notice it.
"Sir, my resignation," she reminded him.
"Wait," he said, ignoring her. She kept standing there, waiting. Minutes passed as he continued working, making her stand in vain for a two-minute work. He made phone calls, worked on his laptop, and even joined meetings, all while ignoring her existence. He was definitely doing it on purpose, and she was too scared to speak up. It had almost been 1.5 hours; her legs strained from standing, too scared to even sit.
"Sir, my resignation," she reminded him again.
"I heard you the first time," he shot back, irritated.
"I’ve been waiting, sir. It’d be great if you could sign it," she said. He gave her a narrow look and finally turned to her. He truly was evil.
"Who gave you permission to leave last night?" He asked. She remembered running off after hearing Lucas announce his engagement.
"I had to go. I didn’t want to disrupt the meeting," she said, but he smirked like he knew she was lying. "Can you please sign the letter?"
An unpredictable look passed over Dominic's face, and he smiled bitterly. Then he grabbed the letter and, without so much as a look at it, he passed it through the paper shredder, destroying it.
"W-what are you doing?" She hesitated, shock taking over her.
"I never needed it. I just wanted to experience how it felt to see you actually resign. To see the defeated look on your face knowing you’re finally getting kicked out," he smirked devilishly, and Evelyn's heart sank. She should’ve known.
"Thank you, I’ll be leaving then," Evelyn said, her eyes welling up again because of his cruelty. She just couldn’t take it anymore; she was humiliated enough. She turned back around after seeing Dominic's face soften a little and rushed out of the cabin.
She felt suffocated in the elevator. All she wanted was to leave this godforsaken place as soon as she could. But as she reached the reception area, she saw a car stop right in front of the main gate. A cold wave crashed through her as someone stepped out of the vehicle, wearing a grey suit and shades, walking into the building with authority. Lucas Harrison.
Her mind was already messed up with everything since the night before. It made her lose all rationality watching Lucas right in front of her. She refused to believe he didn't recognize her, and she wanted answers. She was walking to him before she could think.
"Why are you lying, Lucas? Why are you doing this to me?" She said, stopping Lucas’s path. He looked taken aback as he let her face settle in.
"You... again? Move away before I call the security," he warned her, still keeping his tone down.
"How can you pretend you don’t know me? I’m your wife! You love me! You promised me a life together, and this is how you treat me? Lucas, I’ve died inside since you left. And this is how you come back? This is how I realize you’ve been alive all along? You deceived me?" Evelyn had no idea how she was still holding on, convicting him while crying endlessly.
"Security! Security!" Lucas still looked shocked, like he had no idea what any of this was. He looked around as if waiting for someone to take her away or to save him from this. But before that could happen, someone shoved Evelyn hard, and she fell back on the floor, her back burning from the impact. Diana Anderson, his fiancée, stepped
up.
"You crazy b***h, you seriously expect anyone to believe that delusion? Lucas wouldn’t touch someone like you," Diana spoke with disgust as people started caving in to watch the drama unfold.
"I’m not leaving until I know the truth. Lucas, say something!" Evelyn yelled out, but he stayed rooted, avoiding confrontation. She felt ashamed of herself for his behavior.
"This is obviously a ploy for attention. Throw her out, right now!" Diana said, livid. Suddenly, the security grabbed Evelyn and started roughly dragging her out of the building. No matter how much she protested, their grips didn’t loosen, and no one believed her. Evelyn had lost again. She had ruined everything for herself.
"Let her go," a strong voice boomed through the reception area, freezing everyone. The voice that was Evelyn’s biggest nightmare. The guards let her go, and she quickly spun around to find Dominic standing at a distance, his face completely unreadable. "If you touch my fiancée again, I’ll make you regret being born."
Silence spread through the entire area as the words settled in. Every eye turned to look at Evelyn, who stared back at Dominic with sheer horror on her face.
