Chapter Sixty-one Susan sat stark naked on a stool positioned close to the outdoor shower on the Excelsior’s swim platform. Tears were streaming down her cheeks. Nurse Nancy, standing in back, took up a hank of blond hair and positioned the scissors close to Susan’s skull. “Ready?” Susan heard the ragged sound of the cut– the finality of the closing snip– and Nancy gleefully flung the golden sheaf into the sea. Susan watched the strands open and separate on the waves. Serves her right, Nancy thought, for being so young, so pretty. Maybe Mark doesn’t want me, but my head’s not a billiard ball.
