Chapter 1: Shadows of Deception
The grand Laurent estate was eerily silent that evening. A thick tension hung in the air, unnoticed by Chloe, but deeply felt by Louise. The young heiress sat in the lavish living room, her delicate fingers tracing patterns on the embroidered cushion resting on her lap. She was waiting for her stepmother, Adeline, who had summoned both her and Louise for an important discussion.
Louise, standing near the grand fireplace, observed Chloe with a quiet concern. She was too innocent to see the world for what it truly was, too sheltered to recognize the danger that lurked right within her home. He had sworn to protect her, and he would do so at any cost.
Footsteps echoed through the hallway before Adeline made her entrance. She was draped in an elegant emerald-green gown, her usual warm smile plastered on her face. But Louise knew better. He had seen the flicker of calculation in her eyes too many times before.
“Chloe, dear,” Adeline cooed, settling herself gracefully on the chaise lounge across from her stepdaughter. “I hope I didn’t keep you waiting too long.”
Chloe shook her head with a bright, trusting smile. “Not at all, Mother.”
Louise barely contained his irritation at the way Chloe addressed Adeline with such warmth. If only she knew the truth. If only she could see through the woman’s deceit.
Adeline turned her gaze to Louise. “I appreciate you joining us, Louise. Since you oversee the company’s operations, it’s only natural for you to be involved in this conversation.”
Louise inclined his head slightly. “Of course, Mrs. Laurent.”
Adeline’s smile remained, but something sharp flickered in her eyes at the formality in his tone. She didn’t like that he never addressed her as ‘Madame’ or ‘Lady Laurent.’ It was his quiet rebellion, his way of refusing to acknowledge her as the true lady of the house.
Clearing her throat, Adeline leaned forward, her fingers elegantly intertwined. “Now, I wanted to discuss Chloe’s upcoming responsibilities within K&V Group. As you know, she is the rightful chairwoman, but she has yet to take an active role.”
Chloe’s eyes widened in surprise. “But… father said I wouldn’t have to worry about company matters until I turned twenty-five.”
Louise’s jaw tightened. He knew exactly where this conversation was heading. Adeline wanted to control Chloe’s position, and by extension, the company.
“Yes, darling, but times have changed,” Adeline said smoothly. “Your father wanted what was best for you, but without him here… the company needs a proper leader.”
Louise crossed his arms. “And that’s why I am here, Mrs. Laurent. Mr. Laurent entrusted me with the role of CEO to ensure Chloe’s position remains secure.”
Adeline let out a soft laugh, tilting her head slightly. “Oh, Louise, you misunderstand. I’m not questioning your capabilities. I merely believe that Chloe should start learning her responsibilities now rather than waiting.”
Chloe bit her lip, looking between them. “I… I don’t know. I’ve never really thought about running the company so soon.”
Louise softened his expression as he turned to her. “There’s no rush, Chloe. Your father wanted you to enjoy your youth, to learn and grow at your own pace. You don’t have to let anyone pressure you into taking on a burden you’re not ready for.”
Adeline’s fingers twitched at the pointed remark. She quickly masked her irritation with another gentle smile. “It’s not about pressure, dear. It’s about preparation. You wouldn’t want to be completely clueless when the time comes, would you?”
Chloe hesitated. “I… suppose that makes sense.”
Louise saw the uncertainty in her eyes and knew Adeline was already weaving her influence into Chloe’s thoughts. He had to tread carefully.
“Perhaps a slow introduction,” he suggested, his voice measured. “A few lessons here and there, without overwhelming her.”
Adeline nodded, but her eyes gleamed with something close to victory. “That’s exactly what I had in mind. Just some light exposure to the business world. Chloe should be familiar with what she’ll inherit.”
Chloe smiled faintly. “I guess that wouldn’t hurt.”
Louise kept his expression neutral, but internally, he was seething. Adeline was patient, playing the long game, slowly tightening her grip over Chloe.
Just then, a maid entered the room, her hands clasped nervously. “Madam, there’s a call for you in the study. It’s regarding… the estate’s finances.”
Adeline’s face momentarily darkened before she quickly masked it. “Excuse me for a moment.” She rose gracefully and left the room, but not before throwing a subtle glance at Louise.
As soon as she was gone, Louise turned to Chloe. “You need to be careful.”
Chloe blinked. “What do you mean?”
He sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Adeline isn’t who she pretends to be. She’s manipulative, Chloe. Your father’s last wishes were to protect you, to make sure you weren’t forced into anything before you were ready.”
Chloe frowned, clearly uncomfortable. “Mother just wants what’s best for me.”
Louise clenched his fists. “That’s what she wants you to think. She’s been trying to gain control over your position ever since your father passed.”
Chloe looked away. “Louise… she’s family. I don’t want to believe she would do anything to hurt me.”
Louise softened slightly. “I understand, Chloe. But please, promise me you’ll be cautious. Don’t blindly trust her.”
Chloe hesitated before nodding slowly. “Alright, I promise.”
Louise felt a small relief, but he knew this was just the beginning. Adeline was far from finished, and as long as he was alive, he would do everything in his power to keep Chloe safe.
Little did they know, Adeline stood just beyond the doorway, listening. A smirk tugged at her lips before she turned away, already planning her next move.
