The delicate chime of crystal lingered between them as their glasses met.
"To survive," Massimo said, lifting his glass with a faint smile.
Alessia's eyes met his warmth dancing in them as she returned the toast. "To survive."
Neither of them realised that fate had already decided survival would soon mean far more than either of them imagined.
The conversation carried on effortlessly, drifting from one topic to the next as though they had known each other far longer than a single evening. They laughed over childhood memories, debated which cities deserved their reputation, and discovered they shared an appreciation for quiet places hidden away from the rest of the world. Time slipped through their fingers unnoticed until the restaurant began to empty around them, leaving only the soft melody of the piano and the occasional murmur from the remaining guests.
Massimo glanced around before returning his attention to Alessia, a reluctant smile settling on his face. "I should walk you back to your room."
She rested her chin lightly on her hand, pretending to consider the offer before a mischievous grin appeared. "Is that your way of making sure I don't steal the dessert menu?"
A quiet laugh escaped him as he stood and pulled her chair back. "I'm still not convinced you wouldn't."
"I can't believe you have so little faith in me," Alessia replied, placing a hand dramatically over her chest before accepting his help to her feet. Her playful expression quickly softened as she looked up at him. "You've become surprisingly confident for someone I met only a few hours ago."
Massimo waited until they were walking side by side before answering. "Maybe," he admitted with an easy shrug, "but you're still here."
She looked at him from the corner of her eye, unable to stop the smile tugging at her lips.
"I suppose I am."
Neither said another word, yet the silence between them felt warmer than any conversation they had shared that evening.
The corridor outside the restaurant was quiet, the golden lights casting a soft glow across the polished floor as they made their way toward her suite. Their pace was unhurried, as though both of them silently hoped the walk would last a little longer. Every now and then, their shoulders brushed, and instead of moving apart, they exchanged amused glances that only made the silence between them more comfortable.
When they stopped outside her room, Alessia slipped the key card from her purse but didn't unlock the door. Instead, she turned to face him, absent-mindedly rolling the card between her fingers while studying him with a smile that was equal parts shy and curious.
"I guess this is where we say goodnight."
Massimo looked at her, but no reply came.
Only a short while ago, his grandfather's words had shaken the foundation of everything he thought he knew. He should have been thinking about the file waiting upstairs about the De Luca family, about the dangerous truth that had suddenly landed in his hands. Instead, every one of those thoughts disappeared the moment he looked into Alessia's eyes.
Standing before him wasn't the last De Luca heiress.
She wasn't the woman. Powerful families would soon begin hunting.
She was simply Alessia... the woman who had challenged him, laughed with him, and somehow made him forget the weight he'd carried for years.
His silence made Alessia's smile falter ever so slightly.
"Did I say something wrong?" she asked gently, searching his face.
Massimo blinked, almost embarrassed that she'd caught him staring. A small smile returned as he shook his head.
"No." His voice came out softer than he intended. "I was just thinking that tonight doesn't feel like a coincidence."
Her heart skipped.
She lowered her eyes for a brief moment before looking back at him, the smile returning to her lips.
"I was hoping you'd say that."
The words hung between them.
Neither of them moved.
Massimo took a slow step closer, giving her more than enough time to pull away if she wanted to. She didn't. Instead, she remained exactly where she was, her eyes locked on his as though she was waiting to see what he would do next.
His hand rose almost instinctively, gently brushing a loose strand of hair behind her ear. His fingers lingered against her cheek for the briefest moment.
"If I kiss you..." he murmured, his gaze searching hers, "...tell me to stop."
A soft laugh escaped Alessia, more from nervousness than amusement.
"I don't think I want to."
The answer drew the faintest smile from him.
Without breaking eye contact, Massimo closed the remaining distance and captured her lips in a slow, gentle kiss. It was tentative at first, as though neither wanted to rush something that already felt unexpectedly precious, but the moment Alessia responded, the hesitation disappeared. Her fingers curled lightly around the front of his jacket while his hand settled carefully against her waist, pulling her just a little closer as the kiss deepened naturally.
For a few stolen moments, nothing else existed.
Not the empire waiting for Massimo.
Not the secrets surrounding Alessia.
Not the danger quietly closing in around them.
There was only the warmth they found in each other's arms.
When they finally drew apart, they remained close enough for their foreheads to rest together, both smiling in the comfortable silence that followed.
Alessia laughed softly, her cheeks warming as she looked into his eyes.
"I think that was worth missing dessert."
Massimo chuckled, surprised by how easily she could make him smile.
"I was thinking exactly the same thing."
He pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead before reluctantly taking a step back.
"Goodnight, Alessia."
"Goodnight, Massimo."
She waited until he disappeared around the corner before slipping into her room, the smile refusing to leave her face.
Neither of them knew that by sunrise, whispers of Alessia's existence would begin spreading through Italy's underworld, and the quiet happiness they had found that night would be the calm before a storm.
