Chapter 2: Shadows on the Wall The air was thick with tension as Reize entered the cafeteria, her eyes scanning the crowded room for any sign of Cedric or Raeden. After the charged encounter in the hallway, she felt pulled in two different directions, her heart pounding with a mixture of anticipation and unease. Finally, she spotted Cedric's familiar figure, sitting at their usual table with a few of their classmates. He caught her gaze and waved her over, a bright smile lighting up his features. Steeling herself, Reize made her way through the maze of tables, trying to ignore the anxious flutter in her stomach. "Hey, you," Cedric greeted, standing to place a gentle kiss on her cheek. "I was hoping you'd join us." Reize managed a small smile, acutely aware of the eyes upon them. "Hi, Ced. How's your day been so far?" "Much better now that you're here." He gave her hand a gentle squeeze, his thumb caressing her knuckles. "I was hoping we could talk later - maybe get dinner after school?" Before Reize could respond, a sudden movement at the periphery of her vision drew her attention. There, seated alone at a table in the corner, was Raeden, his brooding gaze fixed on her and Cedric. Their eyes met, and Reize felt a shiver run down her spine at the intensity of his stare. "Earth to Reize?" Cedric's voice cut through the haze, snapping her focus back to him. "Dinner?" "Oh, um, yeah, sure," Reize replied, her mind still reeling. "That would be great." As Cedric launched into an animated conversation with their friends, Reize found herself continuously glancing over at Raeden, unable to shake the uneasy feeling he inspired within her. There was something about him - a raw, untamed quality that both terrified and intrigued her. The rest of the day passed in a blur, and Reize found herself walking alongside Cedric after the final bell, his arm draped casually around her shoulders. She couldn't help but feel a twinge of guilt, knowing that her thoughts had been consumed by Raeden's haunting presence. "So, where do you want to go for dinner?" Cedric asked, drawing her attention. "Hmm, how about that new Italian place downtown?" Reize suggested, hoping a change of scenery would help clear her mind. "Sounds perfect." Cedric beamed, squeezing her shoulder affectionately. "I can't wait to spend some quality time with you, away from all the distractions." As they made their way to Cedric's car, Reize couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. Glancing over her shoulder, she caught a glimpse of Raeden's retreating figure, disappearing around the corner. The drive to the restaurant was filled with Cedric's cheerful chatter, but Reize found it increasingly difficult to focus. Her mind kept drifting back to Raeden, the way his intense gaze had seemingly pierced through her soul. She wondered what was lurking beneath the surface of his brooding demeanor, what demons he was fighting. "You seem a little distracted," Cedric commented, his brow furrowed with concern. "Is everything okay?" Reize forced a reassuring smile. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just a little tired, that's all." Cedric nodded, though she could see the worry lingering in his eyes. "Well, hopefully dinner will help you relax. I know how stressful these last few weeks of school can be." As they were escorted to their table, Reize couldn't help but glance around the dimly lit restaurant, half-expecting to see Raeden lurking in the shadows. But the only familiar face she spotted was that of her best friend, Mila, who was seated with her boyfriend a few tables away. Mila's eyes widened as she caught sight of Reize, and she excitedly waved, mouthing the words "Call me later!" Reize returned the gesture, silently hoping that she would find the courage to confide in her friend about the turmoil she was facing. Dinner with Cedric was pleasant enough, but Reize found herself constantly on edge, her mind preoccupied with thoughts of Raeden. She tried to engage in the conversation, to focus on Cedric's kind words and attentive gestures, but something felt...off. As if part of her heart and mind had been left behind, lost in the shadows. When they finally said their goodbyes and Cedric dropped her off at home, Reize hurried to her room, her mind racing. She needed to talk to Mila, to try and make sense of the emotions that were threatening to overwhelm her. Grabbing her phone, she quickly dialed her best friend's number, her fingers trembling slightly. "Reize? What's wrong?" Mila's concerned voice came through the line. "Mila, I...I don't know what to do," Reize whispered, her eyes stinging with unshed tears. "I think I'm falling for Raeden, but Cedric..." The line went silent for a moment, and Reize could almost hear the gears turning in Mila's mind. "Oh, Reize," Mila murmured, her tone laced with empathy. "This is not going to be easy, is it?" Reize shook her head, even though her friend couldn't see the motion. "No, it's not. I feel like I'm being pulled in two different directions, and I don't know which way to go." "Well, you know I'm here for you, no matter what," Mila reassured her. "We'll figure this out, I promise. Just take a deep breath and try to get some rest, okay?" Reize nodded, a small, tremulous smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "Okay. Thanks, Mila. I don't know what I'd do without you." "That's what best friends are for," Mila replied, her voice warm and comforting. "I'll talk to you tomorrow, alright? Hang in there, Reize." As Reize ended the call, she felt a sense of relief wash over her. Knowing that Mila was in her corner, no matter what, was a comfort she desperately needed. But the weight of her conflicting emotions still pressed heavily upon her, and she knew that the road ahead would be anything but easy. With a deep sigh, she changed into her pajamas and curled up on her bed, her gaze drawn to the shadows that seemed to dance across the walls. The image of Raeden's haunting stare lingered in her mind, and she couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of a journey that would test the very limits of her heart and soul.
