The breeze gently blew my curtain and caressed my hair. "Mom,can I stay at home today?" I screamed as my eyes became heavy with drowsiness due to the heavy medication of last night. Mom stepped in and looked at me. "You are going to school, little lady, I don't want Mrs. Matin is calling me to your school again." I hated Mrs. Martin. She was the root cause of all my troubles. "Okay, mom," I groaned. "I will be an obedient girl and listen to you," I said, imitating Mrs. Martin's voice. Mom just looked at me. You know that look, so I just got up and got ready,no more arguments. I took extra long to do my hair as today was inspection day, and I was always Mrs. Martin's target.
I rushed down for breakfast. My mom wasn't that much of a chef, but the toasted salmon and eggs were her specialty. It could beat any five-star restaurant. Then mom started her usual speech. Ever since I became a teenager mom tells me every morning"Dear, you're 16 and well you know how boys are, don't ever have a boyfriend, don't laugh with them, don't wear too short clothes...".It was the most annoying talk ever but I couldn't blame her. After Dad abandoned us,mom became paranoid. Okay, let me explain in detail. Mom was the most studious girl at school, and Dad was the topper. They were friends for a while until Dad proposed to her. Then they started dating, and I happened. After Dad found out about mom's pregnancy,he left her. He didn't want a responsibility that big and ever since mom has been both parents for me. I never met my dad,nor do I want to.
Mom is an accountant now, and well, let's just say her boss is a bit too friendly, if you can catch my drift. He always keeps her late in office, so the only time we talk is during breakfast, and mom siezes that opportunity to warn me how dangerous boys are. In the middle of our conversation, the doorbell rang. "Come, the door is open," my mom called out. It was Jess,my best friend since forever. Her eyes widened, and her jaw dropped. It was the uniform. "You're coming to school?"she asked. I simply nodded at her. She understood that mom had forced me. "Mrs. Martin's waiting for you." she said.Mrs. Martin seemed to have a personal vendetta against me,though I don't know why. Everything I did was a problem. She desperately wanted me out of Silver High.
"How's Sam?"He's coming for your birthday, isn't he?" I asked Jess a bit too enthusiastically, okay not that much, but enough to earn a huge glare from Mom. I looked at mom, I could tell she didn't want me around any boys, not even Jess' brother Sam."Mom, I'm going," I called out and blew mom a flying kiss. "Bye, sweety, take care," she called out. I took slow, exaggerated steps to school... my nightmare. Jess saw that I hated Mrs. Martin's class, and she cooperated with me. We both cruised to school. "So what did I miss?" I asked Jess, trying to sound as chilled as possible. "Nothing much, just Ms. Flench ,she is well..." "Well what?"
" She's dead,"
"What?"
Ms. Flench was my music teacher, my favorite teacher, in fact. Jess put her hand sympathetically around my shoulder. "It's okay," she whispered and pulled me into a big hug. I hugged her back, trying not to explode into tears. We covered the rest of the distance in silence. It was a long walk, but we eventually reached. I looked at the school again,it was never gonna be the same again.
I put my head down in the assembly as she checked us."Well, look who's back," came Mrs. Martin's croaking voice. I just looked at her. The look she had on her face made my stomach knot even more. She knew something about Ms. Flench. She looked at me up and down and snarled,"Next!"she called. God,this woman! I hate her with a burning passion. I walked silently into her class. Her croaky, monotonous voice drove me mad. I could be sleeping right now, recovering, but this woman always bothers my mom if I didn't turn up. Who was she anyway?. She always insulted us as if she somehow owned us. GG is what I call her-grumpy grimlon. I took down the notes silently, and then she started, "Why don't we ask Serena to explain this since she seems to know it already?" she said in that annoying voice. The entire class turned back and looked at me. Chloe and her gang(the popular kids) laughed. "I-I don't know," I stuttered. "Then why were you not paying attention?"she asked ,her voice authorative."I was paying attention," I protested. She glowered at me. All I was doing was putting my pen away, and now this happened. She is one dramatic old lady.
I looked at her nervously, there was something in her eyes that scared me. Jess smiled at me,hoping to cheer me up, but I couldn't be happy. If dad was here ,perhaps things could be better. The rest of the day went well, but the music class was depressing. It was dead, gone. I loved playing the guitar, but today, that same guitar made me tear up. Ms. Flench was the only teacher who actually understood me and didn't judge me. The way home was a bit sweeter. I could see mom now and cry in her lap.
I reached home and called out to mom, but she didn't reply. That's when I remembered she's probably at work being annoyed by Mr. Jakson. I honestly don't like that man. He has a wife and two children, and yet he harasses my mom. He's fifty years old, and my mom's only thirty-three. He's a total creep, and he calls me Princess and sometimes baby. Does he realize that I'm only sixteen .
