The Tide Turns

Chapter Four We run. Through the back alley, past the bins, over slick cobblestones shining with rain. The sea roars in the distance like it’s alive. We don’t stop until we reach the old pier, the abandoned end no one uses in winter. He turns to me, breath misting in the cold. “I didn’t want you involved.” “You brought a gun into my pub.” “I was trying to leave before they found me.” “Who are they?” He looks out at the black water. “I used to work for people who don’t forgive mistakes.” “And what was your mistake?” A long pause. “Falling in love with the wrong person.” That wasn’t the answer I expected. “And now?” His eyes meet mine again. “Now I think I might be doing it again.” The wind whips my hair across my face. This is insane I’ve known him less than an hour and yet my heart is pounding for reasons that have nothing to do with fear. Behind us, somewhere in the dark, a car door slams. He hears it too. “They won’t stop,” he says quietly. “Not until they get what they want.” “What do they want?” He hesitates. “Me. And something I know.”
