"Dad, what on earth did you just say?"
I was completely taken aback by Dad's words, almost losing my balance in my chair. It had been ages since Uncle last paid us a visit, so I definitely wasn't expecting this bombshell from Dad.
"I've really been pondering over what Rolf said, Dianne. It's such a shame that you're studying here. You have so many opportunities in New York. It's disheartening to see you settle for a small community college after passing up universities. That's why I've made up my mind to accept his offer to help. It's a bit embarrassing, but I'm fine with it," Dad confessed, a tinge of disappointment evident in his eyes. Dad is a proud man, so even though I know he's going through a tough time, he never complains.
"But we don't have any money, right? I know that, so even for next year..." I voiced my concerns to Dad, not wanting to push him into something he can't afford. Even with Uncle Rolf's assistance, there were still many factors to consider.
"Your uncle will take care of everything, Dianne. All you have to do is work for his company when you're not in school, and he'll let you stay in his condo so you won't have to worry about rent. Your uncle is a good person, and it gives me peace of mind knowing he's close to you. I can't always be there for you. He even gave me money for your birthday," Dad revealed, tears streaming down his face. "I'm truly fortunate to have your Uncle Rolf as my best friend. Despite his wealth, he never looks down on me. He always lends a helping hand, even without me asking."
"How about Uncle's wife or girlfriend, Dad? Wouldn't they be upset if I stayed with him?" I inquired casually. I'm genuinely curious about Uncle's relationship status.
"Didn't I tell you that your Uncle Rolf is single, Dianne? He had a failed first love and has been focusing on his business ever since."
It's a shame that such a good-looking man is still single! I couldn't help but feel a rush of excitement.
…
When my birthday rolled around, Dad made arrangements. It wasn't as extravagant as what other kids my age might dream of. But hey, reality versus dreams. We should appreciate what our parents can give us and find joy in that.
So I'm happy. And to make it even better, my crazy friends surprised me with 18 flowers. Not just any flowers, but ones they picked from our neighbor's garden.
"You look amazing in that dress, Di," Melissa complimented me on the red dress that Uncle had given me. It hugged my body perfectly. "No wonder you're catching everyone's eye with those flirty looks." Melissa couldn't stand our classmates and neighbors looking maliciously at me.
Some girls caused a commotion when Edward, my childhood friend, arrived. "Happy birthday, you look even more stunning," he greeted me before handing me the gift he had brought.
He even asked me to dance and actually asked permission from my dad. So, I agreed.
"Your dress suits you, Dianne. You're looking sexy and becoming more beautiful," Edward complimented me.
"Oh, so you've been keeping up with the compliments from our curvy neighbors," I said, shaking my head, while Edward led me onto the dance floor.
"I'm not just flattering you, I'm speaking the truth. You truly are beautiful, but I still prefer the simple Dianne," he promised seriously, causing me to playfully slap his arm.
"You're such a vain person," I snorted. "I like the way I look now. Besides, this dress is a gift from my uncle," I proudly declared.
"Your uncle can be quite annoying. His gifts made you look even better," he said in a melodious tone.
"And why wouldn't you want to have a beautiful friend?" I jokingly teased him.
"Well, since I don't have a job, I won’t say anything… yet," he said, placing a hand on his neck. Suddenly, his face turned red, and I couldn't help but burst into laughter. It was as if he had suddenly become incredibly shy. I didn't push it further, as it would only make him even more embarrassed. Besides, I already understand what he means.
I'm feeling a bit tired, so I decided to leave my friends for a while. I was sitting on the chair when I noticed a silver car pulling up. Suddenly, my heart skipped a beat when I saw Uncle stepping out of the driver's seat. I quickly stood up and greeted him, making sure to get my dad's attention as well.
I chuckled to myself as I was walking towards him, thinking that I was meeting him halfway, as if I were his wife. Well, if I ever get married, I hope I can have a husband like Uncle. Or maybe uncle could be my husband. We’re both single anyway.
As Uncle approached me, he waved, and I couldn't help but feel a bit flustered. His attractiveness was undeniable. I closed my eyes for a moment, taking in his scent from afar. It was a masculine fragrance that was hard to resist.
"Happy birthday, Dianne," he greeted me. That's when I snapped out of my daze and realized Uncle was standing right in front of me, staring at me intently.
And let me tell you, he doesn't call me baby anymore. Whenever he says my name, it sounds so sexy. I could see a certain look in his eyes. I don't know what came over me, but I suddenly found myself hugging Uncle tightly.
"You're looking stunning, baby," Uncle whispered in my ear which sent shivers down my spine, like a delightful tingle that Uncle brought to my body. I even felt something hard below his tummy when he hugged me back.
Oh my, what's happening to me? My mind is going to the wrong places.
"I didn't think you'd make it," Dad's voice snapped me back to reality. I quickly distanced myself from Uncle and casually fixed my dress.
"I came back early, so I thought I'd come straight here," he replied after clearing his throat.
"Come on in," Dad offered. Uncle followed immediately. I was about to follow suit when someone suddenly grabbed my arm.
It’s Melissa.
"Who's that attractive person, my friend?" It seemed like the question was teasingly accompanied by my Uncle's suggestive gaze. "Is he your relative?"
"He's Dad's best friend," I answered.
"Your Dad's friend is quite young. How old is he?" she asked curiously.
"Uncle is thirty-six." My Dad is two years older than Uncle.
"Wow!" she exclaimed, covering her mouth in surprise. "I thought he was only around 25 or 28, but he looks so fresh and wealthy. I even thought he was your lover, considering how close you two are." she continued to probe. "Someone's feeling jealous."
“Huh?! Who?”
“Just someone. Di…”
“What?”
“I wanna cut your hair to make you look ugly and won’t attract guys more,” she said with a grin.
"Maybe I should cut yours," I retorted, trying to get back at her.
"But really, that guy is so handsome. And he looks kind."
"Wait, hold on a second. Are you seriously suggesting that I should pursue Uncle? That's a bit... unconventional, don't you think?" I raised an eyebrow, trying to hide my discomfort.
My friend, Mel, grinned mischievously. "Come on, Di! You can't deny that he's quite the catch. And who knows, maybe he's got a younger brother who's just as attractive. You know, the German shepherd type."
I shook my head, laughing. "You're incorrigible, Mel. Let's not turn Uncle into a dog, okay? Besides, he's still single, and that's all I'm going to say about it."
"And it looks like he even has a broad…future."
Mel's eyes wandered down to Uncle's lower region, and I quickly averted my gaze. "Seriously, Mel? You have such a wild imagination. You're such a perv!"
She shrugged, unapologetic. "Hey, I can't help it if I notice these things. But let's focus on the fact that he's been incredibly supportive. He even financed this party, right? And will help you study in New York? Don’t tell me he’s not your type."
I blushed, feeling a mix of gratitude and embarrassment. "Alright, fine! I admit, I find him attractive, but it's complicated. Liking Uncle feels like crossing a forbidden line. I mean, he's Dad's closest friend, and he's supposed to be my godfather, too.”
"Well, it's not like you're related by blood. So technically, it wouldn't be incestuous. But still, it's best to keep these feelings to yourself, Di."
I sighed, realizing that my secret attraction to Uncle was becoming more apparent.
Mel nodded understandingly. "I get it, Di. Just remember, it's your choice. But be careful with your feelings, and let's focus on enjoying the party tonight."
I nodded in appreciation of her support. "Thank you. I'll remember that. And Mel, let's focus on celebrating and avoid discussing my love life, okay?"
Mel grinned mischievously. "Sure, sure. But if it were up to me, I'd totally make a move. Who knows, maybe he'll take me to bed if I mention that I'm still a virgin."
I felt the urge to smack her. It was frustrating to think that Uncle might be interested in her too.
"Cut it out, Mel."
"You're just jealous, buddy."
"No," I countered. "I just have a crush on Uncle. Even though he's single, he could easily be dating someone. I mean, look at him!" I vented my frustration. Despite Dad's assurance that Uncle was still single, I couldn't shake off the doubt.
"Why do you look so glum?" Melissa inquired.
I couldn't explain it. The thought of Uncle possibly having a girlfriend pained me.
My party ended at nine o'clock. Dad was already drunk, so I was the only one left, but Melissa offered to help me clean up.
As I watched her make her way home, I couldn't help but feel a sense of warmth. Living next door to each other had its perks, especially when it came to keeping an eye out for one another. The darkness of the night was only amplified by the absence of streetlights, a recurring issue that seemed to magically resolve itself whenever elections were on the horizon.
My attention shifted as I noticed Uncle bending down to pick up some trash. It was clear that he had just woken up, exhaustion evident on his face after his recent trip. Even with his back turned, there was an undeniable attractiveness about him that caught my eye.
Approaching him, I offered to help clean up the trash. "I'm here, Uncle. Let me take care of that," I said with a smile.
"It's okay, it's all good, baby," he replied, his smile making my heart skip a beat. There was something about his presence that made me feel a sense of comfort and admiration.
Noticing his gaze fixed on me, I mentioned the food I had saved in case he was hungry. However, his reaction was unexpected. He seemed taken aback, his eyes filled with an emotion I couldn't quite decipher.
"I didn't think that dress suited you, baby," he said, his expression filled with surprise. There was a certain intensity in his eyes that left me wondering.
Curiosity struck me as I pondered why compliments from Edward and my other male friends didn't elicit the same fluttering feeling in my stomach. It was as if Uncle had a unique power to make me feel in a way that no one else could.
"Thank you," I stammered, feeling my face turn red.
"Dianne, do you have a boyfriend? That man you were talking to earlier, is he your boyfriend?" he asked seriously, as if he was angry with his question.
"No, they're just my friends. I told him they're not my priority right now. I'm still a student. So thank you for offering to help me with my studies and for being here for my birthday."
"That's no problem as long as it is for you, baby," Uncle replied, as if his words held some deeper meaning. I scolded myself internally for jumping to conclusions.
I declared my commitment to working hard and studying so that one day we could repay everything with your assistance," I stated firmly. Uncle smiled once more.
"Well, I'm not expecting any repayment. But..."
Uncle approached me, causing me to freeze in place. I couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement as he stood so close, almost as if he was anticipating my next move. The warmth on my face only heightened the moment.
"But... what?" I mustered the courage to ask, while Uncle continued to gaze at me. It felt like I was on the edge of my seat, waiting for him to unveil his intentions.
