The first thing I did when I got to the library was to get an atlas and find Kesteven. It was, indeed, on the South Coast. Right on the other side of the Yllamese strait, at the narrowest point of the strait (an active site of contraband activity, since you can cross the strait with a raft, in a clear enough day, if you want to; of course, most contrabandists use fishing boats as the sensible business people they are). Was the Major trying to catch some contrabandists?
