32 I woke up in the early morning, before sunrise, refreshed after going to sleep early. I asked Bettie to make me sandwiches yesterday, saying I had an engagement in the early morning. So, after I dressed, washing up in the dim yellow light of the gas lamps, I headed to the kitchen, where I put the kettle on. I glanced at my pocket watch. There was half an hour until sunrise. I calmly ate the sandwiches, pouring the food down with the warm, sweet tea. No milk today; I needed my full magical capabilities.
