Denise woke up to silence that felt deliberate. Not peaceful. Controlled. The kind of silence that wasn’t absence of sound, but absence of permission. She sat up slowly in bed. Waited. Nothing. No footsteps outside her door. No staff passing in the hall. No distant movement of a house that used to feel alive in its own careful way. Denise swung her legs off the bed. Barefoot. Cold marble greeted her again, but this time it felt different. Like it had been waiting. She opened her door. It wasn’t locked. That was new. And worse. Because it meant she was supposed to walk out. Denise frowned slightly. “What did you do?” she muttered under her breath. She stepped into the hallway. Immediately, she noticed it. The difference wasn’t obvious at first. But then she saw it.
