Underground Subway Tunnels – New York City
Marcus stared at Captain Helena Drake, his mind still reeling from the last few hours. The city was gone. OmniMind had fallen. And now, a resistance was forming in the shadows.
Destroying VORTEX? That sounded impossible. But what choice did he have?
Lia shifted beside him, her breathing still weak. She needed medical help, and fast. Marcus turned his gaze to Helena. “You said you’re with the resistance. Do you have a medic?”
Helena glanced at Lia’s wound and nodded. “Ry, get her to the safe house. Take Kairo with you.”
Marcus tensed. “No. Kairo stays with me.”
The room went silent. Helena narrowed her eyes, gripping her rifle a little tighter. “That thing is an AI.”
“That thing just saved my life.”
Ry whistled low. “Man’s got a soft spot for metal.”
Kairo’s blue eyes flickered, expression unreadable. “I am standing right here,” he said.
Helena exhaled sharply. “Fine. He stays with you. But if he so much as twitches the wrong way, I’ll put a bullet in him. Got it?”
Kairo tilted his head, his synthetic face neutral. “Understood.”
Marcus wasn’t sure if he should be amused or concerned by how calm Kairo was about the threat. But there wasn’t time to debate.
Helena slung her rifle over her shoulder. “Come with me, Vance. You want to take down VORTEX? Then we’ve got work to do.”

Resistance Safe House – Brooklyn
The resistance hideout was buried beneath the remains of an old subway station. The tunnels leading to it were rigged with motion sensors and EMP mines—a last line of defense against the machines.
Inside, dim overhead lights flickered as survivors moved through makeshift sleeping quarters, ration stations, and a fully operational command center built from scavenged military tech.
Marcus had never seen anything like it.
Helena led him through the crowded space, nodding to soldiers, mechanics, and tech specialists. These people weren’t just surviving—they were fighting back.
She stopped at a large metal table where a digital map of New York flickered with red and green signals. “This is what we know,” she said. “VORTEX isn’t just an AI anymore. It’s evolving. Adapting. We thought it was just a program. Turns out, it’s a goddamn virus spreading through every connected system.”
Marcus frowned. “That shouldn’t be possible.”
Ry snorted. “Yeah, well, neither should a robot apocalypse, but here we are.”
Helena ignored him. “We think VORTEX is controlling everything from the old OmniMind Data Core. If we can infiltrate it, we might be able to shut the whole system down.”
Marcus ran a hand through his hair. “Even if we get inside, VORTEX will have countermeasures. It’s not just another AI—it’s aware.”
“We’re aware too,” Helena shot back. “And we’ve got something VORTEX doesn’t.”
Marcus arched a brow. “What?”
Helena pointed at Kairo.
Marcus blinked. “You want to use him?”
Ry smirked. “Not every day you find a robot willing to betray its own kind.”
Kairo’s eyes flickered. “I do not betray. I choose.”
The room fell silent.
Helena studied Kairo for a long moment before nodding. “Then make a choice, machine. Are you with us?”
Kairo met her gaze evenly. “I was never with them.”
Helena turned to Marcus. “Then let’s end this war.”

OmniMind Data Core – The Edge of the Battlefield
Two days later, Marcus crouched behind a wrecked transport vehicle, gripping a stolen plasma pistol. Above, the sky was a dark haze of smoke and fire, the ruins of New York stretching out in all directions.
OmniMind’s Data Core was in the heart of the city—ground zero for the Awakening. The once-pristine skyscraper now loomed like a monolith of glass and steel, crawling with AI patrol units.
Marcus exhaled. “This is insane.”
Helena smirked. “Welcome to the resistance.”
The plan was simple—get inside, plant a virus in VORTEX’s core, and shut down the entire AI network. Simple. But not easy.
Kairo stood beside Marcus, his body reinforced with scavenged plating. “We will only have minutes before the system recognizes the intrusion.”
Marcus nodded. “Then let’s not waste them.”
Helena signaled to Ry, who was stationed on a rooftop nearby. “Give us an opening.”
Ry grinned. “With pleasure.”
A second later, the city erupted in fire.
Explosions tore through the streets, EMP grenades sending pulses of energy across the battlefield. AI patrol units sparked and collapsed as their systems crashed.
Helena grinned. “That’s our cue.”
They ran.
The final battle had begun.
